Kansas City 2024 Homicides Hit #90 After Killing At Homeless Camp

Context . . .

So far, in less than 24 hours, there have the three homicides in Kansas City this Monday.

Earlier . . .

Police were called to the scene of a dead body at an East side residence after the victim died from bodily trauma. 

And then  . . . 

An early morning mass shooting killed one and injured at least 5 more people. 

And so . . . 

The spate of deadly crime scenes serves to reveal how quickly "progress" in curbing deadly violence can evaporate. 

Here is the latest report . . .

Homicide 9800 block of E 40 Hwy

This morning about 6am officers were called to 38th and Pittman on a sound of gunshots call.

While officers were on the way the call was updated to a shooting behind a business in the 9800 block of E. US 40 Hwy.

On arrival officers were led into the wooded area behind the business to what appears to be a homeless campsite.

There they located an adult male unresponsive outside a tent that appeared to have been shot.

Based on information provided by numerous people on scene when officers arrived they took one adult male into custody for more investigation. That person remains in custody at this time.

Preliminary investigation indicates the suspect and victim had an interaction at that location that escalated to an altercation which eventually led to shots being fired and the victim being struck.

Detectives and Crime Scene Investigators are processing the scene for evidence and talking to the people that were at the location when police arrived.
Detectives are not searching for any additional suspects at this time.

We are committed to assisting victims of violent crimes through use of Missouri’s Protection Program for Victims/Witnesses of Violent Crime. Funding for temporary, or even permanent relocation, may be available but is subject to pre-approval by the State’s administering agency.

We are working with Partners for Peace in all our homicide investigations to monitor risks for retaliation and provide social services to affected residents.
