TKC BREAKING NEWS!!! SHOTSPOTTER STAYS LOSING AMID GROWING COMPLAINTS OF MORE GUNFIRE ECHOING THROUGH KANSAS CITY NEIGHBORHOODS!!!

The ShotSpotter gunshot detection system went live in Kansas City on Oct. 1, 2012 and received high praise from law enforcement officials and politicos upon its inception.

Here's a sample of the hype that accompanied the outset of the KCMO effort:

"The real success of the ShotSpotter system isn’t in the statistics. It’s in the relationships it is helping to build. Sadly, hearing frequent gunfire has become a way of life in some neighborhoods. People didn’t report it because they were scared or felt police wouldn’t do anything about it. Now they see that we are doing something about it, and we are here to make their block safe again. When we show up at these shots fired calls now, people come out of their homes to ask us what is going on. They are learning that we will be there and they can talk to us. If police had been better engaged with the community over the years, we wouldn’t need ShotSpotter. We are working to repair that disconnect and engage the public once again.

"We are not surprised by the effectiveness of ShotSpotter. The system was placed in the right areas of the city – those where violence had become too common of an occurrence. (We will not reveal where the system is located so we can stay several steps ahead of those who engage in criminal activity.) Given additional funding, we would love to expand the system in other areas."

This post was written by the former KCPD Chief in 2013 and touted a decline in neighborhood violence along with some chest-thumping regarding arrests at the time.

Conservative estimates of the program rate the tech as some of the most costly in the nation at $250,000 per square mile.

Recently, San Antonio, Texas, decided that, after using the service for a year, ShotSpotter was no longer worth the price tag—over $500,000, which includes the cost of the service plus officer overtime. During the year that it was in use, the city only arrested four people as a result of the gunshot detection setup, or $136,500 per arrest, according to the San Antonio Express-News.

Right now we won't even get into privacy concerns about the tech that many believe is actually used to spy on street level conversations.

More importantly . . .

AT THE OUTSET OF SPRING KANSAS CITY RESIDENTS REPORT INCREASED GUNFIRE THROUGHOUT NEIGHBORHOODS WITH NO APPARENT IMPACT FROM SHOTSPOTTER TECH!!!

A quick run-down . . .

- The Loose Park Homes Association recently wrote a passionate letter to the Chief Of Police fearing gunfire coming from the park.

- More liquor licenses for The 18th & Vine District have been stalled as overnight gunfire concerns were a big part of the discussion.

- Crossroads/Westside residents are confronting a crime surge and recent neighborhood reports via social media cite the terrifying sound of more gunfire from (ironically) Gage Park among a litany of concerns.

- The sound of rolling gun battles along Kansas City "Highway Of Death" I-71 remain a constant.

- Gunfire echos in Brookside also seem more common according to some tax fighters and City Hall workers.

Accordingly . . .

THE EFFECTIVENESS OF PRICEY SHOTSPOTTER TECH SEEMS QUESTIONABLE GIVEN MORE INSTANCES OF GUNFIRE ECHOING THROUGH KANSAS CITY NEIGHBORHOODS!!!

The company recently launched a successful IPO and has worked diligently to downplay criticism of its main product used by cities across the nation.

Meanwhile, politicos and authorities continue to offer assurances about the reduction of violence in Kansas City in the shadow of another upcoming tax increase vote and despite the promise of previous crime-fighting tech initiatives so far unfulfilled.

  1. I think this is part of undoing the damage of the previous chief who pushed this kind of stuff.

The current chief seems to want more officers on the street and that's a good thing but it will take time to put into action.

    The sooner, the better!

  2. I wonder who is involved in "rolling gun battles". Shooting up parks and ruining ever more neighborhoods, while at the same time, busy robbing, raping and murdering?

Let's all pretend and be good citizens all over America and here too and NOT NOTICE.

  3. This is exactly why "Black Lives Matter".

If not for the contributions of these hard working citizens, especially late at night, working away at their craft, so many police and fire department personnel would be in the unemployment line. Not to mention, all of the judges, lawyers and hospital employees who depend on the dysfunction, violence and ruination of neighborhoods, shopping districts (I forgot construction workers, who no doubt made a bundle tearing down areas like Bannister Mall.) and entire cities who are peripherally involved in cleaning up the mess, suturing and burying the wounded and dead and in some cases, guarding, feeding and "rehabilitating" (Smirk) recidivists 'citizens' who come in and out of prisons 24/7/365.

    Yep.

It's time we showed more appreciation for these late night employees.

What's really great, is to see the dedication, they never take time off, they work nights, it is just wonderful to see this group so inspired and dedicated to their craft.

A big THANK YOU! from all of us, who are too lazy to go out at night at work as hard as you!!!

  4. Oops.

Let's not forget, those intrepid volunteers, who ply their trade, during the day on public transportation.

    Thanks so much!

"The New York Police Department (NYPD) told Fox 5 New York that the incident took place before 4:30 p.m. Saturday while the boy was riding a southbound “G” train with his mother when the stranger allegedly socked the boy in the face for no reason.

The man then allegedly taunted the child before fleeing the scene, police said.

The boy suffered from bruising and swelling on the left side of his face. Emergency medical personnel took him to NYU Langone Health Cobble Hill, where he was treated and later released.

Authorities are searching for a 20-year-old black man about six feet tall and 160 pounds with short black hair, a mustache, and a medium build. He was last seen in public wearing an olive green shirt, black jacket, beige cargo pants, and black sneakers.

These subway attacks are not uncommon. In December, a suspect allegedly punched a 70-year-old on a New York City subway stopped in Queens in an unprovoked attack.

The attacks are reminiscent of a dangerous trend called the “knockout game”—where teens randomly walk up to a stranger and try to knock them out with one punch."

  10. Oh No! Reports of gunfire from social media? from Brookside, according to "some tax fighters" What reason could THEY have to lie about gun fire? Hmmm. "The sound of rolling gun battles along Kansas City "Highway of Death" I-71 remain a constant" According to who? You? Please. You're scaring the old folks again Tony with some really spotty "journalism". Hilarious!

  22. Wait now... All these tide pod eating constitutional Scholars say crime in general and school shootings in particular are caused by suburban and Rural (white) people owning guns. Apparently our guns sneak out at night while we are asleep, catch an Uber to the hood and shoot people. Then they sneak back home and hide before we wake up.

Or it's the Amish Mafia again. One scenario makes about as much sense as the other.
