TKC BREAKING AND EXCLUSIVE NEWS!!! KANSAS CITY INSIDERS FEARS MIKE BURKE DEVELOPMENT TRACK RECORD AND CITE PROSPECT NORTH FAIL AMID NEW DOWNTOWN CONVENTION HOTEL HYPE!!!
Today's Downtown Convention Hotel project announcement from Mayor Sly is both anticlimactic and troubling for Kansas City Insiders.
Remember that our blog community offered a preview to this move back in April.
And then about a day before anybody else, our KICK-ASS BLOG COMMUNITY BROKE NEWS OF THE DANGEROUS DOWNTOWN CONVENTION HOTEL ANNOUNCEMENT.
Later, we rounded up coverage with presser pix and link featuring the most informative conversation in the metro.
The result . . .
KANSAS CITY INSIDERS ARE MOVING TO CALL OUT MIKE BURKE'S NORTHLAND TRACK DEVELOPMENT TRACK RECORD AMID THIS SKETCHY LOCAL PROJECT!!!
Here's the word . . .
"For Mike Burke's last development, KCMO paid $6 MILLION to settle a lawsuit, and will be spending $1 million a year till 2021 for bonds.
This is the City's new Convention Hotel developer?? Give me a break!!"
Now, while others only have vague reservations our blog community can give readers SPECIFIC directions and deets about the previous development fail.
Just go find "Prospect North" on a map. It was referred to as "Renaissance North" for awhile. We followed the demise of that project FOR YEARS and it's one of the reasons that Mr. Burke isn't Mayor.
Deets:
A hot mess that cost $6 Million: "The Kansas City Council voted to settle the lawsuit over the failed Clay County development. The money will come from capital improvements sales tax dollars. Prospect North, also known as Renaissance North, was once envisioned as an 80-acre development near Maple Woods Community College."
Now . . .
KANSAS CITY INSIDERS ARE FIRST TO NAME CHECK PROSPECT RENAISSANCE NORTH CONCERNS THAT COULD IMPACT THIS DOWNTOWN CONVENTION HOTEL PROJECT!!!
Moreover . . .
KANSAS CITY INSIDERS SAY: IF MIKE BURKE'S LAST BIG PROJECT COST KANSAS CITY $6 MILLION IN LAWSUIT CASH . . . MAYBE LOCALS SHOULD BE A BIT SUSPICIOUS ABOUT THIS NEW PLAN!!!
You decide . . .

KCMO has some serious problems and we're heading toward bankruptcy
ReplyDeleteif u really knew about this, u would know that this was Mike Burke's price for throwing his campaign.
ReplyDeleteSly sold us out.
ReplyDeleteTKC, u have to show some excitement about this, it could be good for downtown and could provide more jobs. Those are two very important things for KC's future in long term.
ReplyDelete" our KICK-ASS BLOG COMMUNITY BROKE NEWS . . ."
ReplyDeleteZZZzzzzzzz!
Get Don Maxwell on the job!!!
ReplyDeleteWildman, u r very smart. Try to be happy, u have a good life.
ReplyDeleteU also don't know much about news.
Kinda racist, sad because u never did much with your life. there is still time. Do your best, then maybe you can be happy at the new Downtown hotel.
ReplyDeleteTKC and your "denizens" please move to Parkville.
ReplyDeletemake no mistake that $35 million would be better spent relocating niggers on a one-way ticket to niggerland.
ReplyDeleteu should also let us speak the truth about our nigger problem. that's what people obviously want to discuss.
People who use "u" for "you" are generally not very bright.
ReplyDeleteI’m getting tired of calling these clowns grifters all of the time. Maybe they aren’t grifters. Perhaps they are honest people doing the best that they can. Perhaps they just cannot find their own asses with both hands.
ReplyDeleteOur elected officials have a real problem when they travel to other cities like Seattle, Minneapolis, and other places with active downtown's. They think they can make CKMO like them and waste tax dollars trying. VOTE THEM OUT OF OFFICE.
ReplyDeleteI wish for the days when these people with these big ideas would just not use my money to do their big ideas.
ReplyDeleteIf their idea is so good, and for the good of the city, then why don't they ever use their own money?
We use to call these bums "FREELOADERS".
At last check, we, taxpayers, are paying $1M/year to help subsidize the downtown Marriott. So it makes TOTAL sense why we'd throw even more tax dollars down the shitter for another hotel that tax dollars will have to finance forever.
ReplyDeleteBut, it makes total sense since tax dollars will have to finance the toy train forever. Why not add more tax burden to the low and middle class while we continue to put more tax burden on the poor and lower tax burdens on the rich?
I need to move out of KCMO. These city officials couldn't manage their way out of a wet paper bag.
WE STILL CALL THEM NIGGERS
ReplyDeleteSue the City and you'll win every time because Sly and the City Hall do NOT want dirty laundry aired at trial.
ReplyDeleteSounds like a good idea too me .
DeleteTypical big money real estate deal. The developers borrow money with no personal guarantees, little equity and the taxpayers will make most if not all the payments. If it fails, they walk away leaving some pension fund with the loss.
ReplyDelete
ReplyDeleteHere's the NET EFFECT of building this Hotel:
With the exception of ONLY 1 or 2 conventions per year -- and maybe another World Series -- The NEW HYATT will DO NOTHING but LEACH BIZ from the two Crown Center Hotels and the Downtown Marriott.
When the NEW HYATT is built, we should EXPECT New Subsidies for the 3 older hotels -- ABOVE WHAT THEY ARE ALREADY GETTING!!!
AND there will be NO SPIKE in New Convention business -- because convention business is in the shitter.
I consider myself to be an average KCMo. Northlander. Like others, I am against street car expansion, ruining Berkley Riverfront Park, and a completely new airport bleeding my hometown. But I think a new convention hotel downtown sounds like a good idea and the first thing in a long time that makes sense.
ReplyDeleteI just wish the developers had the balls to gamble with their own money. Someone Downtown has to learn to say no. We don't care if they feather their nest, just don't brag about it.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
ReplyDeletethat is a fact! About time somebody said it.
Pretty obvious that hotel bldg architect doesn't have much knowledge of structural engineering!
ReplyDeleteThat's a collapse waiting for an earthquake.
Beware of the convention industrial complex. A lot of cities haven't seen the promised success with this kind of development.
ReplyDelete10:06--- You must be confusing physicists with engineers. You see, physicists live in theory-land, while engineers deal with real life application. Industry standards for the region would dictate the tolerances for KC. And judging by the plans approved for local bridges, I don't think earthquake tolerance is rated very stringently in KC.
ReplyDeleteBut the design looks alot like the Godfrey in Chicago.
We don't have beaches, Disney World or Casinos like Vegas so this convention talk has never made sense to me. Yes, we can attract large groups with concerts, pro sports and the types of conventions that want to keep their attendees focused during the day. It seems like a pipe dream to build for the big players when they generally look for more destination locations. Who said this is a game changer? Let me guess, someone with something to gain besides convention business? I attend conferences frequently and I choose places I want to visit to kill two birds with one stone. Combine a vacation with business. I love KC but we have what many cities already have. A hotel is not the deciding factor, it's what is there to see.
ReplyDelete11:22 please consider seismic changes due to fracking. So far they are localized to fracked areas but those shifts may travel.
ReplyDelete12:00, totally agree. This city has let the "Build It and They Will Come" virus infect their thought process. People just aren't sending their employees to as many conventions as they did years ago. And when they do it's to places like Florida, Vegas, NY, etc.
ReplyDeleteKC is slowly killing itself with that thought process. As has been mentioned, the downtown Marriott still relies on tax dollars to make it work. We're paying to the tune of $14M/year for the P&L. We never did get the major league tenant we were promised for the Sprint Center...When does this madness end?
Now we're going to spend MILLIONS on a convention hotel without the promise of more conventions? Let's see, put hope in one hand and shit in the other...
Just another reverse Robin Hood trick that this city is trying to pull where they rob from the poor to give to the rich. Unbe-fucking-lievable.
I seriously think KCMO is trying to kill itself. Seriously.
ReplyDeleteIf the older hotels come to us with their hands out for a fresh deal because this new hotel, they have to be told that the gravy train doesn't stop here anymore. These owners now need to add value to their own establishment themselves or get out of the way. They should be able to prosper ot fail on their own sweat not ours. Survival of the fittest.
ReplyDeleteThe founders of our town who gambled everything to put their name and their pride in big letters on their showplaces should be spinning in their graves. KCMo.is not a cowtown any longer and once identified, carpetbaggers should and will be shown the door. There are more of us than of them. Elections will do no good, we just have to learn to be rude.
Yes the sky seemed to be the limit during the sub prime housing boom also.
ReplyDelete$300 million for 800 beds huh?
ReplyDeleteSo conventions are going to flock to KC now just so they can hang out with downtown's rural rubes like Staubio and Johnson, urban lumber jacks in flannel shirts, ride rental bicycles to and fro, glance at street artists blowing on kazoos, and marvel at the toy train to nowhere?
ReplyDeleteIs that the idea?
Did you hear about the man who was half Polish and half Italian?
ReplyDeleteHe made himself an offer that he couldn't understand ..
Did you hear why the nigger with diarrea was freaking out?
ReplyDeleteHe thought he was melting!
What does a nigger and sperm have in common?
Only about 1 out of two million actually work
Why are apes always frowning?
They heard that in a million years they'll be niggers!
Two things I know for certain:
ReplyDelete1. The folks touting this are not dumb.
2. This is not a wise investment.
So, it is clear there are ulterior motives involved. Money and ego would be my guess.
Wow. I am not from Kansas City, but I am actually dumber for having found this site. If the comments here are any indication of the attitude and intellect of your city... Well, good luck.
ReplyDeletePlease don't come back.
DeleteIDK. "Build It and They Will Come" has worked out pretty well so far I'd say. Every time I go down to the Sprint Center and watch our own major league pro team followed by going to our multi-billion dollar entertainment district that is completely self-sufficient and paying for itself while planning to find just one tiny spot on the street car back to...oh wait...nevermind...
ReplyDeleteThis money could be put to better use for tanks and. Torture room
ReplyDeletePropaganda is no longer working
ReplyDeleteATTENTION
ReplyDeleteFor those wishing to leave Kansas City, handy road signs are now in place. They inform as well as advise.
ATTENTION
In Phoenix, the 1,000-room headquarters hotel fell so short of projections it required a $12 million city bailout; in St. Louis, the city-owned hotel went bankrupt.
ReplyDeleteevery convention center starts with 'con'
ReplyDeleteHere is idea that City Hall missed. You prepare a request for proposal, send it out to potential developers, and then select the best bid.
ReplyDeleteKCBJ
ReplyDeleteThe $300 million downtown Kansas City convention headquarters hotel to be formally announced Monday morning is expected to win incentives and other city approvals by Aug. 1.
Why that date? Because that's when newly elected members of the Kansas City Council will take office and six current members who have reached the end of their term limits will exit.
"This council is very supportive and recognizes the need (for the hotel)," City Manager Troy Schulte said Friday. "We're trying to figure out a way to allow the process to get before this City Council to make that decision before the first of August."
1:38: Thanks for visiting the site again, Mensa boy.
ReplyDeleteA couple of years grace period for new business to find their legs. Then sink or swim. I don't care how things used to be done, tie up city hall in paper work and run them ragged until they cry uncle.
ReplyDeleteThis years election is already bought and paid for. But we will have done our job if none of the new council even want to run the next time.
This is my town and I don't like what I let it become.
it's a shame that we don't get to vote om this, it seems like a boondoggle.
ReplyDeleteThat thing is uglier than a dog turd.
