Shame: Kansas City Single-Serve 'Shooter' Booze Ban Coming Soon

For locals lucky to live long enough, the is no shortage of cowtown irony and recycled bad ideas.

To wit . . .

AMID RAMPANT EAST SIDE CRIME NEAR LIQUOR STORES, SINGLE-SERVE BEER & LIQUOR TAKES THE BLAME!!!

Remember . . .

Last Summer a great many "community leaders" united against local immigrant small biz in order to impose stricter hours and limits on liquor sales. For those in the crowd of the press conference, the demonstration was kind of shameful inasmuch as many local stalwarts were comfortable sharing tacitly racist allegations against convenience store owners that local news carefully edited . . . A few people in the crowd were shocked by some of the xenophobic sentiments from locals who otherwise touted themselves and supporters of "civil rights" for their own communities.

And now . . .

A really dumb idea reemerges.

TKC has written about this wrinkle in KC history previously because it's how we started our "career" in local journalism. Sniffle.

Back in the late 90s, as a student reporter, 'lil TKC covered a ban against the 40 oz. as a response to a homicide spike in 1993 and the prevalence of "gangsta rap" culture that highlighted otherwise disgusting malt liquor. The ban remained until the 2010s when it eventually faded from existence and proved to be nothing more than a mild annoyance for liquor store owners . . . Suffice it to say . . . The 90s-era ban DID NOT stop local crime but at the beginning of our reporting career we were amazed the elected leaders and so-called adults would waste valuable time pushing forward a dubious idea that container size any impact on anyone but lowly convenience store clerks.

And now . . .

Single-serve liquor is taking the blame for rampant shootings near Prospect when we all know that the illicit drug trade is PROBABLY a bigger culprit.

Accordingly and apropos for #TBT . . .

For most of us this won't represent any hardship and might only require the plebs to reach further into our pocket to buy a six pack rather than a tall boy.

What's more depressing is that KCMO is reviving an idea that's more than 30-years-old in order to fake local action against violent crime.

Here are more deets and reporting . . .

"The proposed ordinance would affect liquor up to 35% alcohol in containers under 7 ounces, including half pints. Single-serve beer would also face restrictions, requiring containers larger than 40 ounces for sale.

"The ban would not apply citywide. It would only affect stores with liquor licenses in the Prospect Corridor, Independence Avenue, parts of downtown, Blue Ridge and Midtown."
