Faux Or Flex: Kansas City Council Dude Fights For Christmas

TKC is a (middle-aged) child of divorce and needs help unpacking a local story . . . 90s grunge rock, more than two decades writing about municipal politics and the Internets have afflicted this blog with nearly crippling cynicism.

Our main question . . .

HOW SHOULD WE FEEL ABOUT RIGHTEOUS INDIGNATION OVER KANSAS CITY CHRISTMAS DECORATIONS AT 12TH & OAK?!?

Yes, we are deada$$ asking for help . . .

On the one hand . . . There a lot more important things to get upset about . . . For starters:

The Plaza wants 200 MILLION BUCKS for their skyscraper scheme.

There's a 100 MILLION budget shortfall in KCMO.

The Royals are still dog walking every low-rent politico in the Kansas City metro for their FREEBIE stadium.

And, our pet peeve, liquor stores STILL don't carry the 40oz because of an outdated Regulated Industries rule enacted because of inglorious 90s hip-hop. WU-TANG!!!

But it's not all snark, cynicism and jokes about your mom here at TKC.

The idea of a Kansas City councilman fighting for Christmas sounds as if it was inspired by a Hollywood classic like Miracle on 34th Street or It's A Wonderful Life

We're trying hard not to be soooooo cynical that we lose our empathy or begrudge anyone's holiday season joy.

Then again . . .

Let's not forget that KCMO Council Dude Willett is also running for Missouri State Senate and he has that kind of dumb, farm-hand charm that right-wing news desperately needs to seem more wholesome in between rants arguing in favor of launching missiles into some hell hole 3rd world tent village.

Put simply . . .

There's ALWAYS a political angle but that doesn't mean the complaint isn't sincere.

And so we share a quick summary and more reporting so that AWESOME TKC READERS can either confirm or deny our faith in humanity . . .

A Kansas City councilmember took to social media Thursday to express his disappointment with a new memo at City Hall.

The memo, which city councilmember Nathan Willett took offense to social media, was issued by city manager Mario Vasquez and told employees no religious symbols would be on display this year.

“As we prepare for the holiday season, I want to share how we will approach seasonal decor at City Hall this year,” Vasquez’s memo read. “To ensure City Hall remains a welcoming space for everyone and to honor the separation of church and state, we will not display religious symbols as part of our holiday decorations . . .

Willett voiced his frustration with the decision.

“I could not be more disgusted and discouraged by this memo and the message it sends to our faith communities throughout Kansas City,” Willett wrote. “Christian symbols among other faith traditions during this season should be proudly displayed in City Hall.
