Holiday season slap fighting that started with a "disgusted" note from Kansas City Councilman and aspiring Missouri State Senator Nathan Willett has now been seized upon by a far more controversial denizen of the right-wing discourse.
For those who don't know his work . . . Bill Donohue is a longtime conservative faith leader who has garnered countless talk show appearances and even earned ridicule from the South Park guys.
To wit . . .
CATHOLIC LEAGUE HONCHO BILL DONOHUE NOT ONLY CONDEMNS THE CITY MANGER OVER CHRISTMAS DECOR GUIDELINES BUT ALSO SUGGESTS SELF-IMPOSED EXILE TO CUBA IN A SCATHING PUBLIC REBUKE!!!
Here's a quote from his letter . . .
I could not help but notice that you are boasting about the display of "decorated trees," and the like, in City Hall. That you couldn't even mention "Christmas trees" — you must tremble at the site and sound of the dreaded "C-word" — tells me all I need to know about you.
"Cuba also bans Christmas. Why not go there for Christmas? Make sure you get a one-way ticket."
And whilst the Catholic leader is trying to be clever, we'll share a bit of public info to give more context to his words . . .
A quote about the newish city manager . . .
“Born in Bolivia and raised in Wisconsin, he began his career in Kansas City as an entry-level planner in 1997 and has since led some of the City’s most complex and high-impact initiatives. Mario’s path to city manager is the definition of the American Dream.”
The reality is that there are many places in the world that ban Christmas from Saudi Arabia to North Korea . . .
But the Cuba line from Donohue gets to the crux of what he's REALLY trying to say and the angle he's taking . . .
It's a snithe criticism that's cool for politics but doesn't really capture the spirit of the faith that Donohue purports to defend . . .
Just for Sunday and this working-class recession holiday season we humbly ask our readers to engage in a bit of mental gymnastics . . .
Would Jesus leverage ethnic heritage in an argument over holiday decorations???
We can only hope that, at the very least, the Almighty might be more accurate with His posturing against Latin American backgrounds.
But I digress . . .
