The latest word from Mayor Q is notable because nobody buys it . . . Or maybe because the city hall honcho might be planning on moving out of KCMO very soon after his term ends.
In today's social media blast Mayor Q seems committed to defending Congressman Cleaver . . . Then again, he's spent that last two years talking downtown baseball when back in 2021 he compared it to a Maserati.
Still . . .
We must show respect for Mayor Q's hustle but many insiders aren't forgetting that some of this most successful moves have come by way of reversing course on VERY important issues from early career police support, new KCI issues and a formerly tough approach on local developer subsidy.
TKC Reality Check: Mayor Q's only upward move is to replace the Congressman at some point and probably sooner rather than later.
And so we'll share the quote but won't take his commitment to getting an 81-year-old dude reelected too seriously . . . Here's a bit of extensive social media writing from Mayor Q today:
"Decency and following the rules alone should protect the seat, but anyone who thinks a Kansas City-area redraw is done easily without jeopardizing at least a GOP-held seat in a strong Dem year doesn’t appear to know the city and suburbs here and could actually build the fastest way to getting us a 5-3 map, rather than the 7-1 goal.
"Up north, Platte County is a positive trend for Dems, Clay County has been a bright spot for Dems in close state senate races for years, as is Lee’s Summit out east. In the city’s core, low east side turnout has plagued Dems, but those voters haven’t left. New maps put all in play.
"What’s more, metro Kansas City retains a strong party donor base, numerous potential candidates who have raised millions for other races with great name ID, and a need for energy that only a ridiculous mid-decade redistricting meant to silence Kansas City’s voices can provide.
"One hopes common sense prevails. If not, Kansas Citians and western Missourians will ensure Rep. Cleaver prevails again and make long ho hum November contests in the Missouri Sixth and Missouri Fourth great again. We’ll get on the road for a district that has Columbia and the Country Club Plaza and all the other odd wrinkles they’d try to throw our way."
