This has been a cruel summer for grocery stores in Kansas City.
Across the Internets . . . Pundits spent weeks dunking on cowtown socialism and the plight of the Prospect Sunfresh.
Even worse . . .
Arguments over claims of a "food desert" reemerged but this time with VERY LITTLE SYMPATHY OR COMPASSION for locals who have better access to convenience stores than the produce aisle.
Today's installment in the drama . . .
The embattled Sun Fresh shuts down and raises a bit more doubt in effective food retail models for urban areas going forward.
The basics . . .
"Despite almost $18 million of dollars in taxpayer investment over the past ten years, the Sun Fresh grocery store in the Linwood Shopping center closed its doors Tuesday."
Here's the message posted on their doors and feared by customers . . .
"Unfortunately, due to unforeseen circumstances beyond our control, we are no longer, at this time, able to serve the residents of this important community.
"It has always been our dream and passion to provide quality products and services in a safe, family environment.
"At this time, unfortunately, we are unable to do that."
