This week we noticed quite a few local journalists proudly proclaiming a comeback for an embattled entertainment district that has recently struggled after more than a century of success and growth.
Sadly, there wasn't much context about what precipitated the decline of Kansas City's beloved Country Club Plaza but that's our job . . .
Of course recent investments and renewal of the Plaza are tacitly credited to Mayor Q helping to secure a deal with a Hunt-family-affiliated investment group . . . And this KINDA counts as a victory given that the demise of this district was mostly a result of Kansas City's top politico standing with an angry mob yelling "no justice, no peace" in the midst of BLM riots that consumed the nation during the 2020 pandemic election cycle.
But all of that is prologue for a far more important question that we present to our readers:
WILL 100 MILLION BUCKS WITH OF IMPROVEMENTS & SECURITY BRING PATRONS BACK TO THE COUNTRY CLUB PLAZA?!?
Let's not forget real world context wherein luxury good can be purchased easily online at a discount.
Still, in fairness, the Plaza isn't just a shopping district but a place to "see and be seen" and the Internets is pretty horrible at replicating that experience given that so many bots, troll armies and soulless influencers kinda ruin the experience for most of us.
Accordingly . . .
We share a glimpse at this week's hype for the consideration of our fellow skeptics . . .
"The shopping centers, new owners have announced they've quadrupled security, added 150 cameras and a license plate reader to make sure customers feel safe. They have also revealed new roundabouts proposals to slow the Plaza's traffic along with more pedestrianized walkways between shops, more Spanish facades, a promise to have fewer national chains and more local stores. And they've even teased a Trader Joe's."
