Here's What 'KC Tenants Power' Is Doing Wrong & How To Fix It

Recently local activists earned accolades and feature coverage in this nation's paper of record for their efforts to champion the rights of low-income residents.

The New York Times loves KC Tenants and hyped the new "power" group ploy that hopes to earn representation on the city council in upcoming elections.

There's only one problem . . .

SO FAR KC TENANTS HAVE ONLY SHOWN SUPPORT FOR POLITICAL NOBODIES WITHOUT ANY RECORD OF CIVIC INVOLVEMENT!!!

Their announcement of council contenders was bold but mostly unnoticed.

And so . . .

We reached out to insiders who graciously shared just a bit of political expertise . . .

First, a perspective about the basic premise of the group . . .

"They have no base. The people they're advocating for, their main constituency of low-income workers who struggle to pay rent . . . They don't vote. They should. But they don't.

The whole premise of the group is that they have a massive base of renters who want stronger advocates . . . That's simply not true and there is election data to back it up. Homeowners and seniors are the most reliable voters in KCMO. That might not be true in a decade . . . But right now that's what the data shows us."

And then . . .

Another savvy insider offers this bit of advice . . .

"They need to develop real candidates. Not just their friends. KC Tenants Power should seek out people who have REAL insight into how municipal elections work and use that knowledge to partner with viable contenders. At the very least, they need to work with elected officials to find some form of compromise and a working relationship beyond retweets.

There's a big difference between protesting and working to craft policy . . . They took credit for a GO Bond victory but the reality is that there wasn't any opposition and they had VERY LITTLE TO DO WITH WRITING THAT LEGISLATION. In fact . . . Anyone who reads it closely understands that money for housing is just one of many funding promises . . . And we all know how good KCMO is about keeping promises."

Now . . .

A bit of encouraging news . . .

Rumor has it that KC Tenants Power have a few surprises for KC voters and a slate for the upcoming election that MIGHT change the status quo after all.

Developing . . .
