KANSAS CITY AFFORDABLE HOUSING ORDINANCE: LOW-INCOME SALVATION OR ECONOMIC DESTRUCTION?!?

This afternoon the fate of the so-called "downtown Kansas City renaissance" depends on Mayor Q, the council and their estimation of equity and inclusion regarding developer incentives.

To wit . . .

KANSAS CITY THREATENS TO ADJOIN SOCIAL JUSTICE WELFARE TO CORPORATE WELFARE WITH SLOPPY LEGISLATION THAT MIGHT PREVENT PRICEY DEVELOPER GIVEAWAYS OVERALL!!!

The bright side . . .

The effort is stepping backwards into reform that oddly unites both fiscal conservatives and fair housing activists.

We shared our concerns with Mayor Q and he replied  a worthwhile perspective that confirms our thesis . . .

"If this goes like the 75% ordinance, fewer will use incentives to build multifamily, which actually will reduce some of the "corporate welfare" you're discussing."

And he's right.

Developers despise this ordinance and claim that any limits to their freebie cash feeding trough will halt local building.

Reality . . . COVID has transformed the American economy and old school incentives should be discouraged given the busted KCMO budget . . . If posturing on behalf of po'folk does the trick . . . Providing campaign material for politicos can be forgiven.

Here's the quickest/best write-up from local MSM . . .

KSHB: KCMO City Council expected to vote on affordable housing ordinance

Deets . . .

"The ordinance would require any housing developer receiving tax incentives from the city to reserve a portion of their units for affordable housing.

"20 percent of units would have to be set aside for affordable housing and of that, 10 percent would be set aside for families earning 70 percent of HUD's median family income estimate ($86K in KCMO). The other half would go to families earning only 30 percent."

You decide . . .

  1. This is a start. But I'm still voting against the e-tax.

    1. KC runs backwards.

NOW is a great time to offer incentives and encourage investment. KC was giving away the store during good times. Now that we need those jobs, we want to ruin every new housing development.

  3. If you knew what you were talking about you'd understand that it's really just the beginning of a FREE housing mandate from the Biden Administration. This is how it starts, by the time they're finished we'll have mandatory low-income price fixing that will skyrocket rates for everyone else.

    Elections have consequences.

  5. Good info in the post but this is just about Quinton wanting more free stuff for his voters.

    Handouts rule KC.

  6. This is a great way to run developers off and continue the decline of kc. Bunch of libs who will do anything to play to their base in spite of what it does to the city.....

Want an example: Look at Detroit, Baltimore, and the list goes on!!

  7. 131 nails it as KC takes another swirl closer to going down the crapper.

  8. Economic destruction.

  9. Nah, these ordinances only make development more expensive and actually reduce overall production of affordable housing. Cut regulations. Eliminate zoning (neither Japan or Houston have zoning laws). Set low, flat taxes. Developers will flock!

  10. Surely people can't be so stupid that they'd pay inflated rates for"luxury" apartments in the same building as ones with "affordable" rates.
Will these landlords accept Section 8?
The suckers who bought into the "luxury" hype downtown already enjoy vehicle races in the streets, celebratory gunfire at New Years, homeless folks crapping on the sidewalks, and increasing homicides.
But at least, so far, those exciting urban events are taking place OUTSIDE of their homes.
Once again, perhaps good intentions without any thought given to unintended consequences.
Perhaps some adult supervision or at least for life experiences would be helpful for city council and mayoral service.

He left up the part that they will more than make up with it in corruption and stupid projects.

  12. You Biden supporters be sure to leave your yard signs up and bumper stickers on your cars so that when gas gets up to 8 bucks a gallon people know where to siphon.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Oh is Biden going to start manipulating supply and demand, which is HOW FUCKING GAS PRICES ARE DETERMINED?

    1. He manipulated supply, and wiped out thousands of jobs--including many held by native Americans--by interference with a pipeline. Pipelines and the efficiency of oil transportation influence supply.

No need to shout, lil guy. One day you'll understand extremely basic economics. ;)

    2. 5:39, he canceled a pipeline that WASN'T FUCKING BUILT YET.

But then that's the model of the chucklowes: Get the facts first, and then distort them as much as you please.

    3. Oh gosh. Now you're teaching us business! So these massive infrastructure projects are never, ever considered in terms of their economic weight until they day they are finished! And they certainly don't affect markets at all until some sort of magic occurs and everyone says it's ok. Amazing!

What's next, yell baby? Astronomy? Lol

  14. Oh that picture. I haven't been to 10th & Paseo in years. It's sure gone to shit.

  15. North of the river land/home owners should somehow consider secession from Kansas City, and petition North Kansas City, Parkville, Platte City, Gladstone and Liberty to include them in their cities.

I suspect the tax base would allow that to negate a burden on the respective communities. Even continue some kind of E-Tax with a firm “rock solid” expiration date to assist the cities to adjust to the reconfiguration.

KCMO could proceed on its certain path into bankruptcy.

Maybe (doubtfully) removing the valuable taxpaying North populations would finally force reforms in KC. If not, so be it.

It would be interesting to see how this dimocrap administration would support the “special groups” who are always clamoring for our/your money.

Folks in the North could care less about the billion dollar rat-holes like the Toy Train, empty Tiffed hotels, failed schools, Power & Light forever indebtedness, MLK this and that, 18th and bottomless pit Vine as well as the huge scam of a “White Elephant” un-needed airport; always ignoring neighborhood infrastructure repair and maintenance needs, while spending more and more on bling. If it ain't downtown, they don't give a shit, except for our tax money.

To some degree, this would be akin to a Johnson County North. Home values would undoubtedly see a dramatic increase, with rents accordingly escalated, which would serve as an incentive for attracting responsible buyers and renters.

If they're moronic chucklowes, yeah. Yeah let's secede and be forced to set up completely new police fire, sewer, streets and water infrastructures.

      GOOD FUCKING IDEA
