Accordingly, a local crime expert offers his perspective on a worsening situation . . .

RISING VIOLENCE AND BACKLASH AGAINST POLICE THREATENS TO SEND KANSAS CITY DOWN THE SAME PATH OF DESTRUCTION & BANKRUPTCY ENDURED BY DETROIT!!!

Here's the analysis, research and insight from one of the top crime experts in the region who sends this EXCLUSIVE word to our blog . . .

Dr. Ernest Evans: Kansas City and the "Detroit Crime Death Spiral"

Kansas City, Missouri and a number of the nation's great cities seem to be caught up in what I call "The Detroit Crime Death Spiral." In KCMO we have had 84 homicides so far in 2020--the highest number of recorded homicides in KCMO was 153 in 1993. In Chicago the city has had 25 homicides in the past week--in the whole month of June 2019 there were 47 homicides in Chicago; as of June 21, 2020 there have been 56 homicides in Chicago in June 2020. In Baltimore there were 20 homicides in April 2020--in May 2020 there were 39 homicides and as of June 20, 2020 there have been 24 homicides in Baltimore. In Philadelphia there were an average of one homicide a day in 2019--in the past 17 days there have been 34 homicides in Philadelphia.

So, what exactly is the "Detroit Crime Death Spiral?" In 1950 Detroit was a city of two million people. Now it is a city of 700,000 people and falling fast: 200,000 people moved out of the city in the past decade. In 1967 there was a terrible riot in Detroit--by the time it was all over, 47 people had died. The city's political class went on a police-bashing frenzy. Local cops began leaving the force and going to neighboring towns, applications to the police force went down sharply, and crime began to surge. With crime rising sharply, businesses and population moved out, undermining the city's tax base--so there was no money to upgrade and strengthen the police force. So, crime surged some more, people and businesses continued to leave, yada, yada, yada.

In Detroit today there are a huge number of abandoned but magnificent old homes that the city will sell for a dollar to anyone willing to move in and repair the homes. But, few people are taking up the offer. And, Why? In Detroit the city's police force is so understrength and demoralized that it takes an average of 58 minutes from the time someone calls 911 to the time the police arrive at your home or business. Families and business people are not going to take risks like that for their families or their employees, so they stay out of Detroit.

There is no reason, I repeat no reason, why this sort of "death spiral" cannot take place in KCMO. The KCPD is 200 officers smaller than it was in calendar year 2013--the last year before the Ferguson tragedy of August 9, 2014. KCPD morale is hurting badly--a huge number of officers and their families have applied to start counseling. If cops start leaving the KCPD and going to other cities, and if those left behind are too discouraged to do their jobs we could end up starting the destruction of the city as we know it just the way Detroit has been destroyed.

In conclusion, in 1935 the famous US novelist Upton Sinclair wrote a novel entitled "It Can't Happen Here." It was the story of how a dictator took over the US. Most of the political elite in KCMO naively believes that what happened in Detroit "can't happen here.' They are wrong, it can happen here. I fully, fully support reforms to end the sort of terrible tragedies we saw in the death of George Floyd, but the sort of frenzied police bashing we have been seeing here in KCMO is not going to end such tragedies--it is only going to destroy the rule of law in cities all over America, including quite possibly our great city of Kansas City, Missouri.

  1. KC has been heading down this path for years.

The repeated giveaways to billion dollar corporations aren't helping.

  2. KC as Detroit has always been a danger but now seems more likely since protesters basically ruined on of this town's most profitable entertainment districts.

And nobody really feels bad about it at all.

  3. Excellently written, I hate to leave the city but one just can’t take the risk of staying here anymore! You don’t want to be the last ones to leave and lose all your investments!

  4. Stick a fork in KC. A city can survive democratic rule for only so long before ruined in the quest for unattainable social justice, political correctness and patronizing of ungrateful POC.

  5. now the hood rats are hitting the Northland!

a black guy killed his White wife..then shot himself today in the area of KC bordering Liberty..

MSM and BLM will blame it on the cops..

  7. How many blacks does it take to fuck up a neighborhood?

    ...just 1..

  8. Start letting the cops split some skulls and let's get this city get this city under control.

  9. Sure Kansas City is in a swift downhill spiral all related to crime and lousy leadership at city hall. It's a sad day when Mayors no longer want to see the people and property protected and uphold the laws which do so. Chaos and death are the gifts that too many Mayors are bring to our cities including Kansas City. Saying "I told you so" at least once a week isn't going to be that helpful, but it's not like it wasn't foreseeable as to what would happen last June when Lucas was elected .

  10. Excellent column by Ernest Evans, and the most accurate assessment of the current climate so far. Sadly, it's not something any mainstream media operation would print.

  11. Henry Service repeats the black refrain, "It's all whitey's fault".

The black community must recognize that they have a problem within their own people that only they can fix.

  12. Sinclair Lewis wrote "It Can't Happen Here." Just saying if you can't get that right, what ever else you say starts looking like shoddy research.

  13. Dr. Evans is, as always, thoughtful and rational. I just wish more people paid attention.

  14. "Crime Expert" - how do you get that gig?
Spend years studying and analyzing Crime?
Or take and advanced degree n Criminology?
    Or commit lots of Crimes?
    Or be Black?

  15. really great post. I remember a long time ago we used to have a newspaper in Kansas City that published informed opinion pieces like this one. Not any more.

  16. We need to listen to the community. If you really talk to people on the east side they're just as skeptical about 18th & Vine as everyone else. Too bad so many "leaders" put down their voices.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Thank you Dr. Evans for bringing the facts instead of just feelings and protesting to the discussion. The community needs the police to be accountable but make not mistake that we do need police.

  18. If mayor Q wasn't afraid to look at the KCPD crime statistics he would see what, where and who the problem is. Then again maybe he has seen them but doesn't understand them. In short the statistics show the same thing that many people on TKC have been stating.

  19. Dr Evans was spot on. $100,000,000 wasted on 18th and Vine. Police under attack for trying to protect the Plaza. Jacks Stack BBQ is seriously considering leaving the Plaza location now. Don't think they are the only ones. Westport is a crime center. The plaza has always had more crime that people were told. Vast numbers of residents in outlying towns and suburbs will not go downtown under any circumstances. The economy is tanking and the City is drowning in debt. The Sewer system has not been fixed after years of the EPA demanding it. Voters approved carte blanche bond issues with no limit but will anyone buy those bonds now? Just imagine the interest rates that will result so they sell. There won't be a turn around because KCMO voters are stupid. They prove it at every election. Even Jack Cashill proved to be stupid last time.

  20. Just think what the crime satistics would look like if no black people lived here.

Just think what our murder count would be if no black people lived here.

Now see what the problem is?

    It sure ain't whitey.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I know the answer! Kansas City should ignore these problems and focus on building a new airport it can't afford and extending the street car to stops nobody will want to go to. Let's leave it up to the Boy Blunder to completely misunderstand the challenges the city is facing and focus on things that will only hasten its decline.

  22. Dr. Evan's is spot on.

When you have pigs heads thrown at you, bottles of urine, bricks, rocks, spit and live firecrackers while working 16-17 hour days.

Then you are disrespected by the KCMO government, Jackson County government and the local media, what do you think will happen?

All the freaking lies in the media about it being a mostly "peaceful" protest is complete and utter lies.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Dr. Evans raises an excellent (and likely) point. KCMO is quickly going down the tubes and the entire metro area will be affected. Maybe residents can visit the jazz museum while they’re waiting for 911 to show up to their emergency.

To my faithful readers: Many thanks for all of your comments!! One reader spotted a mistake: I absent-mindedly referred to the author of "It Can'T Happen Here" as Upton Sinclair--the author is actually Sinclair Lewis. I have read most of the novels by both authors, and I highly recommend them. Lewis' most famous novel was probably "Elmer Gantry"--while Sinclair's was probably "The Jungle." The authors were both social protest writers of the first half of the 20th century and shared broadly similar politics--so it is easy to get them confused. Take care!! In Christ, Dr. Ernest Evans

  26. Don't forget the KCPD is looking at a $10,000,000 budget cut for next year. Yeah, that will be a brilliant move. Less money. Less Police Officers. You know how that works. Kansas City the new Detroit.

    ReplyDelete
  27. The budget cuts didn't target the police; the budget cuts were across the board. Revenue is down, dramatically. The police don't show up regardless. Waste of money. Rick Smith is a racist... Enough said.

  28. "Research"?? You've got to be kidding me. Where are his peer-reviewed publications? Why is his 'research' published in blogs and local newspapers? Could it possibly be because it is completely unfounded?

  29. Dear Anonymous: Thank you for responding to my posting. I got my undergraduate degree from Brown University in 1972--I graduated Magna Cum Laude, Phi Betta Kappa, and with Honors. I got my Ph.D. from MIT--the director of my doctoral dissertation was Dr. Samuel P. Huntington--he later became President of the American Political Science Association. I have published two full length book, two edited books, and fifty full-length articles. I feel that I have the qualifications to write on the issues that Mr. Tony posts me on. Sincerely, Respectfully and in Christ, Dr. Ernest Evans
