Missouri School Investigating 'Slave Trade' Homework Assignment

A Missouri elementary school is investigating reports that fifth grade students were given assignments last week that asked them to consider the price of slaves on their hypothetical plantation - and what price to assign the slaves.

If they were as problematic as their descendants, $5 for two slaves sounds pretty steep.

Well, in 1850, slaves were worth more than they are now. Mechanization has reduced the need for slaves since 1850. But the main difference is all the welfare programs that have eliminated the willingness for a slave to work.
