KANSAS CITY MAYOR & COUNCIL PASS TENANT 'BILL OF RIGHTS' TODAY BUT THEY'LL HAVE TO PAY FOR IT 2020!!!
It's a somewhat watered down version with a few important changes . . .
The measure puts some conditions on how landlords can handle a prospective tenant's rental payment history. It bars landlords from denying renters who have a criminal record, just on that basis alone . . MONEY LINE: ADVOCATES WILL HAVE TO COME UP WITH AROUND $1 MILLION TO FUND THIS PROGRAM.
That's a huge payoff for a group asking for a litany of freebies.
From KC Tenants on their victory:
"Over 115 supporters witnessed the KCMO City Council pass a historic KC Tenants Bill of Rights this afternoon. After almost two months of deliberation and negotiation, both parts of the Tenants Bill of Rights package — a resolution and an ordinance — passed, the resolution with a 12-1 vote, and the ordinance with a 10-2 vote and one abstention . . . "
"Our entire community should be proud of our KC Tenants Rights package and what it will mean for the nearly half of all Kansas Citians who rent their homes,” said Mayor Quinton Lucas. “Since becoming mayor, my office has worked with KC Tenants on this package, which demands safe, quality and affordable housing for Kansas Citians – and I’m tremendously proud of the result. This process is an outstanding example of how legislating should always be done: through crafting smart and deliberate policy, providing ample opportunity for community input.”
“Growing up, my family experienced bouts of homelessness, and I know how it feels to have a hole in your window for weeks during the dead of winter, with seemingly no recourse,” continued Mayor Lucas. “These policies will change how we do business here in Kansas City, and will be a national blueprint for empowering tenants in communities across the country.”"
