TKC EXCLUSIVE PIX AND POSTSCRIPT!!! GREATEST KANSAS CITY CLIMATE STRIKE IN HISTORY!!! POLITICOS TALK GREEN NEW DEAL WITH NEXTGEN PROTESTERS!!!
This week the Kansas City NEXTGEN took to the street in record numbers for a protest that made local history.
To wit . . .
SUNRISE MOVEMENT DOMINATED HEADLINES WITH HISTORIC KANSAS CITY CLIMATE STRIKE AND CONVERSATIONS WITH LOCAL POLITICOS ABOUT SUPPORT FOR THE GREEN NEW DEAL!!!
The Green New Deal Renaissance is a surprise from the Heartland and two deeply red states BUT shows us younger voters working to mobilize for 2020.
Here's the round-up along the EXCLUSIVE PIX FROM THE SCENE and the narrative according to protesters . . .
Largest climate strike in Kansas City history is led with Sunrise Movement KC as part of global call for climate action and inspires Mayor Quinton Lucas and Councilman Eric Bunch to back local Green New Deal
Kansas City, Missouri - Over 750 people attended what may have been the largest climate strike in Kansas City history today. The strike kicked off when hundreds of young people with the Sunrise Movement and other organizations left their classrooms and workplaces today to meet up at the University of Missouri-Kansas City and march to a nearby climate strike rally at Brush Creek/Theis Park. Local members of Sunrise Kansas City joined the millions of young people striking around the globe to call upon the political and media establishment to take action on the greatest existential threat of our time.
“Climate change is the biggest threat to humanity. It is on us to move forward and push for change in all aspects of our lives. We must support big and bold initiatives like the Green New Deal,” UMKC Student Body President Justice Horn said. At the rally, Horn also pushed for the University of Missouri system to divest its $13 million of fossil fuel holdings.
The 11AM student rally was one of thousands of strikes taking place across the U.S. At the rally, young members demanded a regional and federal Green New Deal, a city climate emergency declaration, and a just transition for frontline communities.
At 5PM, members from many organizations in the Kansas City Climate Strike coalition joined the Sunrise Movement for a second mass rally at Mill Creek Park on the Plaza. The coalition included The Sierra Club, Extinction Rebellion, MoveOn, Indivisible, 350, the Service Employees International Union Local 1, Missouri Interfaith Power & Light, Fossil Free UMKC, KC Vegans for Climate Justice, Climate Council of Greater Kansas City, Bridging the Gap, Kansas City Tenants, the UMKC Geology Club, StandUp KC, UMKC Women in Science, the Battery Tour, the Southern Christian Leadership Conference of Greater Kansas City Mountain Movers, March for Our Lives Kansas City, and the Metropolitan Energy Center.
This large coalition delivered a swath of messages related to the climate crisis before marching on the Country Club Plaza. This included Kansas City Tenants Organizer Maya Neal, who highlighted how Kansas City’s affordable housing crisis intersects with climate change.
“I’m anxious about climate change because I know that as it displaces people worldwide and within our own borders, it’s only going to exacerbate the struggles of vulnerable people like me, who already can’t afford to stay in place,” said Neal.
4th District Kansas City Councilman Eric Bunch, and Ward 1 Overland Park City Councilman Logan Heley joined the coalition and spoke at the rally. Both politicians became the first on the local level to back the Green New Deal, responding to the many demands of their constituents in Missouri and Kansas respectively.
“We demand the next president of the United States to prioritize solving the climate crisis by enacting a Green New Deal as their first job. We demand that our congresspeople take the Green New Deal pledge and reject any fossil fuel money. And we demand our local, elected officials: governors, mayors, state legislators, and city council members to stand with us in declaring a climate emergency and implementing a Green New Deal for Kansas City and Missouri,” Missouri State University graduate student and Kansas City-native Amy Ramirez said.
Democratic Congressional Rep. Emmanuel Cleaver II (MO-5) visited briefly and spoke with some of the young people at the evening rally, including Madeline Meloy, 23. He did not back the Green New Deal or pledge to refuse fossil fuel money, but Meloy remains hopeful.
“We had a productive conversation which made clear that he values environmental justice, and this makes me hopeful that he will come to see that the Green New Deal is the best way to achieve that as we continue to speak with him in the future,” said Meloy.
After the rally, the climate strike coalition shut down the intersection of 47th and JC Nichols Parkway as they marched near the Plaza Art Fair. Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas arrived in time to march and backed the Green New Deal, paving the way for further climate action in Kansas City. The strike and rallies are the first of many to follow in the coming months as young people and the rest of the coalition pressure more leaders to address the climate crisis. Ramirez agrees.
“No more injustice, no more destruction, and no more corruption. Today we strike for First Nations people to call for respect of indigenous land. We strike for frontline communities who have been displaced and/or hurt by climate injustice. We strike for our lands and oceans to protect biodiversity. We strike for workers, families, minority communities, plants, animals, and future generations to achieve the future we know that we can have.”

Good crowd. I don't deny their work is important, but wish we could also see that same kind of commitment in bringing the homicide rate down.
ReplyDeleteGood crowd but aren't most college students registered to vote in their own home districts. I don't notice a lot of new votes coming from around Midtown.
DeleteThey doth protest too much?
OMG. So many haters already who don't acknowledge that at least these young people are out there doing something instead of just waiting for the next buffet or expecting a hand out for playing video games on the couch. Good for them, they got out there and did something they thought would help the planet. May not agree with everything they say but glad there are still people who are excited about local

ReplyDeleteWhat a bunch of idiots
ReplyDeleteCommie pinko bastards.
ReplyDeleteYou will be taxed back to the stone age, all in the name of fictional climate change (formerly known as: global warming).
ReplyDeleteScrew you, @6:12 I didn't fight for this Country so shitheaded cowards like you can try to put down American Citizens who are exercising their rights!
ReplyDeleteYou're the UnAmerican you piece of shit- if you don't like the freedom given to ALL Americans, then leave!
Scuse me GI Joe. 6:12 has the same right to expression as anyone else.
Delete@5:43 Good comment and idea. The only problem there is no money for the politicos to grab when bringing the homicide rate down.

Historic?
Hardly.
There'll be three more "protests" by the end of the weekend and none of them will have made a bit of difference.
The local politicians like Lucas need to get back to city hall and work on the responsibilities they actually have.
And the students would probably be better advised to spend some time in history and civics classes.
All entertainment and new "celebrities" each and every day.
The democrats who are in control of the cities with the most filth, piles of human shit everywhere, homeless campsites with murder taking place in record numbers are telling you they can change the temperature of our world......just send money and vote for them so they can.
ReplyDeleteYou'd have to be dumber than vomit to believe those idiots who spew this crap at you.
^^^ Dead on the money Dave.
ReplyDeleteWonderful enthusiasm, except that the Green New Deal is a hilarious, impossible joke that has nothing to do with environmentalism. To support it requires a maximum IQ of about 65, and none of its most visible proponents has any intention of abiding by it.
ReplyDeleteWell, kids do silly things. :)
"Climate Change" hysteria is all based on what has again and again, been proven to be fallacious stats acquired by those who are paid in order to produce those fallacious stats. It's a living I guess. These stats mostly based on false and fudged readings of ocean temps, atmospheric temps etc, etc then produce "Computer Models".
ReplyDeleteWhat a fuckin joke.
The computer model is a mathematical construct with only one requirement, that it successfully predicts events. If a computer model is incorrect, it is no longer valid. After years of predicting radical changes in climate, why are IPCC forecasts always wrong?
Why do the IPCC models require that raw data be modified?
Water vapor is the most abundant and effective greenhouse gas - 1000 times more effective than CO2. Why do the IPCC models not account for atmospheric water vapor?
Assumptions about greenhouse gas affects violate the 2nd law of Thermodynamics. Should we alter the IPCC models or revise the 2nd law of Thermodynamics?
Even if the model program is absolutely correct, it still relies on the data it is modeling be correct. Where do you think the term "Garbage In, Garbage Out" gained popularity?
From Jack Hellner-
"It is dangerous when teenagers that have been indoctrinated their entire life are treated as if they have knowledge on climate change and fossil fuels. They are just repeating talking points when trotted out on media outlets and before Congress as if they were experts. They have been discouraged from doing research and critically thinking because they have been told the science is settled. They know that anyone who says the climate is and has always changed naturally is de a climate change denier; to get good grades they need to repeat what they are told.
It is more dangerous when almost all journalists and other Democrats repeat the same talking points instead of doing research and asking questions. Instead of pointing out to the teenagers that temperatures, sea levels, storm activity, droughts and floods have always fluctuated naturally, and previous dire predictions have been 100% wrong they just go along.
A high percentage of high school students don’t have basic math, reading or science skills, yet yesterday they were let out of school by the millions to push the Democrat agenda on climate as if they somehow have knowledge on that. They are being denied genuine education on the basics and cynically exploited as pawns for a government power grab."
He's right, I taught in the Kansas City School District long ago. The teachers, must less the kids, could hardly string together coherent sentences and the lack of erudition has, in no way, improved in my opinion.
Then again, I guess, at this point, our schools are so pathetic, that it probably doesn't make any difference.
Progressives are liars and manipulative Fascists.

ReplyDeleteWhere's Mr Mercedes when you need him....
ReplyDelete6:35: Great post. Amazing how some folks like to call names rather than use facts to argue a point.
ReplyDeleteLet Lucas and Cleaver could care less about helping people with the assessment disaster.. etc, etc, etc.
ReplyDeleteAlways ready for the do goody do do bullshit photo op though.
Lucas, Bunch, and Cleaver.
ReplyDeleteGod help us all with these asshole$ in charge.
Nice Democratic party rally kiddos! Didja get a t-shirt?
ReplyDeleteAnother Demoncrat rally based on fake news and funded by George Soros’ goal of one Socialist World Order.
ReplyDeleteMany of these protesters will end up being stock brokers and McMansion builders at some point bitching and griping about neighbors having a recycle bin on their front porch.
ReplyDeleteNo worries! "Contrary to popular belief, birth control pills account for less than 1 percent of the estrogens found in the nation's drinking water supplies, scientists have concluded in an analysis of studies published on the topic."
ReplyDeleteEssentially, the "Climate Change" hysteria, is a nation wide, premeditated, False Necessity Trap, designed to terrorize and indoctrinate the naive, uneducated, uninformed middle class in an effort to euchre even MORE money out of their wallets and into Federal/Fascist/Progressive pockets.
ReplyDelete6:35,
ReplyDeleteGetting into a barfight in San Diego doesn't count as "fighting for my country".
In other words, you are full of bullshit.
Gimme $400 Million and I shall bring bicycle lanes for and lasting freedom from the climate and planet destroying evil motor vehicle people!!!!
ReplyDeleteLOL shake shack behind that Lucas Selfie.
ReplyDeleteClimate Change adherents are constantly at a a "Holodomor Denial" level of ignorance, but, hey, if it makes ya happy to constantly lay awake nights worrying about "THE SKY IS FALLING!!!" horseshit, have at it.
ReplyDeleteGood for them! They are changing the world! The next generation is so much better than this one who just sit and cry on blogs all day in lieu of a meaningful existence. Chuck and stupid Dave are the prime examples of that most worthless generation. So much crying and complaining, so little action. Their generation can’t come to an end fast enough. These kids will change the world while you losers change your diapers. Keep crying and complaining losers....it’s all you’re good for.
ReplyDeleteHa! Ha! Kids...changing the world! The only things they're changing is their goofy hair colors and adding more stupid tats.
DeleteAfter the rally, they all decided to help OJ "Find The Real Killers".
ReplyDelete9:14 has a REAL job and couldn't make it to the rally. He works for a guy with a whip, who makes him crawl into holes and look for treasure.
ReplyDeleteYep, he was promoted.
9:14 AM
ReplyDeleteGood morning Chimpy. I bet you we're you doing this back in the 1960's. Hey hey LBJ!
Still need to get Mayor Q fitted for a clown suit. Get rid of that freshly pressed white shirt and tie crap. That look doesn't work.
ReplyDeleteDid these three then go over to the art carnival for a quick cotton candy eating photo op before getting back into the Escalades?
ReplyDeleteThey can go to the plaza to hang out on a nice day to protest the climate boogie man but they can't go east of troost to help clean it up
ReplyDeleteThe KANSAS CITY ATHEIST COALITION as usual will talk BIG, hand out some bottled water, and go exchange bodily fluids. That sums it up.
ReplyDeleteAh Council Clown Bunches main squeeze and partner was busy protesting.

My Senior daughters private KC all girls high school (you figure out which) sent a note home that said they were letting the kids "protest" and walk out of their classes - either for the student part mid-day or the entire rest of the day, it was their choice. Worse, it would be considered an "excused absence". My daughter was the ONLY kid left in the class, to get an education. I called her out to go to work early and earn some extra cash.
ReplyDeleteFor this I pay all this tuition? For excused absences to "protest" and have a few moron classmates play beer pong and get in trouble.
Spare me the values of higher education. My younger daughter told us she wanted out this year and is homeschooled. best decision she could make.
Goofy SJW shit by Catholic organizations is running off their parishioners as fast as the perv/pedo/ponzi priests are. When Papa Francisco went all cray kumbaya urging for Catholics to accept openly declared LGBTQXYZs as parishioners AND NOT TO BE EXCLUDED FROM LEADERSHIP ROLES....the devil done danced on the altars and spit in the faces of the all the angels and saints, AND the made a mockery of all living true Christians.
DeleteLucas by the way is blocking people on his social media. No hard questions permitted. Mr. Transparency at his finest.
ReplyDelete^^^^ Ouch.
ReplyDeleteGot a point there. Have to lead by example in KC.
THE LUNACY OF THE LIBERAL LEFT
ReplyDelete"We must support big and bold initiatives like the Green New Deal," UMKC Student Body President Justice Horn said. At the rally, Horn also pushed for the University of Missouri system to divest its $13 million of fossil fuel holdings.
UMKC is a COMMUTER school! That's COMMUTER as in driving an internal combustion engine vehicle back and forth to school.
Quinton "Born a poor black child" Lucas was there pandering to the imbecile crowd, taking photos in front of ShakeShack! Of course, ShakeShack (and all Plaza businesses) rely upon a transportation system which delivers their inventory, employees, and customers. It's a system based upon fossil fuels.
High school kids who've been brainwashed by Climate Change alarmists can be forgiven as ignorant youth. But there is NO EXCUSE for vapid adults like Lucas, Bunch, and Heley.
Wow, that demonstration really helped! I feel cooler already! Think of all the carbon these guys saved! Oh! Wait! Our whole life system is carbon based. Is this just a plot to rid the earth of all life? Hmmmm. I wonder.
ReplyDeleteWhaa!!!!! Boo hoo!!!!!! Whaaa!!!!! I want to cry about some kids who out doing things that matter, while I sit here and do things that don’t. Whaaa!!!!!! Oh no!!! Kids out protesting??? Hell no!!!! This is America!!! How dare you????? Don’t you know the only way to really make a difference is to say on a blog and bitch about things that make you feel bad about being such a worthless loser!!!! Whaaaa!!!no protests ever!!!! Boo hoo! They’re sooo young and vital, and we’re all such pathetic wastes that all we can do is call them names all day and bitch about them here!! Whaaa!!! I’m so glad there are a few of us who can cry together here. I don’t feel like such a loser when I know stupid Dave & cuck will also be here instead of living. Boo hoo guys!!! Boo hoo!!!
ReplyDeleteOh Chimpy. So many words for such a little monkey!
DeleteI don't want to argue with the popular sentiments here but let's give these folks some credit. They are out there doing what they believe is right, and they want to change the world.
ReplyDeleteIt's important to have young people who do that.
Talk with some conservatives and they should be somewhat concerned with what is happening to the planet. Instead of just shouting them down, making fun of them and trying to berate them. As a Conservatives, I'd like to see a Republican effort to make reasonable environmental improvements. This shouldn't be a left & right debate, we all have to live on this planet.
Sure, 11:17, they deserve credit for changing the world! Especially, the freaks spewing bullshit hot air about climate change dangers while they're causing lots of environmental toxins with their frequent hair color changes, wearing crap make-up, and covering themselves in so many stinky inky tats!
DeleteThe Nebraska Militia has been on board for quite sometime. Watch Beau From The Fifth Colum on YouTube if you don't want to listen to the snowflakes.
ReplyDeleteThe Metro Has more Green Then most Communities. Hear comes the Rich Folks in there big long limousines, and there goes the poor folks they just got to have there GREEN.
ReplyDelete9:14 and 10:58 you ever get tired of talking to yourself?
ReplyDeleteScaring kids into literally thinking the earth will not exist past their 20th birthday. Sounds like child abuse to me. The indoctrination of our youth is going to be the downfall of our society. I was a kid in the 80's and they taught the same crap to me back then - and I didn't believe it then, don't believe it now.
ReplyDeleteYou've got the Obamas buying oceanfront property in Martha's Vineyard, in an area that was supposed to be underwater by now. I guess the Obamas don't believe in climate change either.
"UMKC is a COMMUTER school! That's COMMUTER as in driving an internal combustion engine vehicle back and forth to school."
ReplyDeleteThat would explain all the student housing and electric vehicle charging stations.
Thanks for clearing that up, 10:44. Now I, like you, will never have to leave my rusted trailer to check things out in the real world.
@8:51, my MOS was a simple 11B, what was yours?
ReplyDeleteManaged to pick up a (g) suffix in the "garden spot of Southeast Asia", but managed to stay away from San Diego, how was it?
New Greenback Dollar Deal
ReplyDeleteOh look at us with Mayor Lucas! See he's one of us!
ReplyDelete^^^ LOL interesting seeing them suck up to the very people who are screwing them over.
ReplyDeleteIt’s just a bunch of worthless liberal dipshit kids, nobody pays any attention to them anyway. It’s only brought to our attention for a good laugh! Hahaha!
ReplyDelete8:51 was familiar with San Diego because that's where he used to pick up sailors. Nowadays he serves at a fast food place in Blue Springs, posts on TKC in between flipping burgers and lives in his sister's basement.
ReplyDeleteIgnore him. Maybe he'll go away.
Gosh were did all those fossil seashells in the ground around here come from ? Dear smarty pant students please look into that.
ReplyDeleteOMG it's raining and I can't ride my Bicycle! Climate Change!
ReplyDeleteMe too. Had to jump off my rental scooter due to climate change making it rain. Luckily it was right in front of an artisan donuts shop where I can make my own custom artist like donuts with my peers until climate change makes the sun come out.
ReplyDeleteA Friday conversation between a father and a daughter....
ReplyDelete"Daddy can I drive the Tesla to school today? We only have a half day of school and then there is a rally I want to go to." Where is the rally and what is it about sweetie?" "Well it is down on the Plaza, you know how I love shopping on the Plaza Daddy, and it is about saving the environment, you know that Green Deal thingy". "Yes I know but why the Tesla?" "Because it is all about the saving the planet and the environment and the Tesla doesn't hurt the environment because it doesn't use fossil fuel, it's electric!". " Well where does the electrical power for the car come from sweetie?" "Oh daddy you know that it makes it's own electricity". "Sweetie you have a lot to learn!"
So how do gay men make a living now? Won't this climate change bitching seriously affect the local house flipping market?
ReplyDeleteecosystem collapse is a good bet, but is that caused by carbon? Carbon is another tool in the ecosystem collapse toolbox.
ReplyDeletethe great Lakes used to support a major fishing industry and jobs, not anymore. is that a indication of a problem or a potentially more severe problem?
ReplyDeletedid carbon kill the fishing industry in the great lakes?
ReplyDeleteThe weather just plain sucks here that's the bottom line.
ReplyDeleteI wonder if Visit KC counts this as "tourist" activity.
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to being governed by the good decision-making priorities, concern for others, and maturity of 16 year-olds?
ReplyDeleteYou might want to reread "Lord of the Flies".
what a waste of time. If climate change is real then it can't be stopped. No one is giving up their car or A/C so those oceans will keep on rising.
ReplyDelete3:04, no. The decline in commercial fishing is due to a combination of overfishing for many years, plus competition from invasive species such as the Asian carp.
ReplyDeleteBut thanks for asking.
