Kansas City 'No Fare' Push Persists

Freebie bus effort keeps rolling. "The KCATA spends $8 million each year to run its buses, with most of the money being generated from fares."

Here's the latest:

KCATA chief continues push to eliminate fares on regional buses

Kansas City is inching closer to eliminating bus fares, and the system's man in charge says the idea could have a huge ripple effect. Robbie Mackinen, president and CEO of the Kansas City Transportation Authority, says most of the system's riders are headed to and from work and school.

Remember this when your property taxes go up another 200 to 1000%

Charge the tourists on the free streetcar and maybe there will finally be money available for city infrastructure.

Fares do not go towards the buses

Everyone must walk No more busses or trains. Shit in the streets like they do in San Francisco.

^^^Where do the fares go?

Wait. No need to respond. I can guess.

The article is incorrect. The fares collected is said to be $8 million and the total budget is said to be $100 million. Improve the service first to increase ridership. The buses are empty... what is the point? Free or not the ridership wont increase due to poor service. Those that cannot afford the bus have endless options for a free pass today.

Free bus service, I am for it as long as every rider who rides can show proof they have JOB, no JOB no free RIDE!!

^^ Actually If they have a job or those who are retired, the taxes they pay makes that NOT a free ride. Anyone without a job....the free bus service would actually be a free trash relocating service with multiple pick ups and drop off's...nothing more, nothing less.

The free buses will fill with bums who ride them to avoid the cold or heat. The stench will be nearly unbearable. But at least it will free up some sitting space at the library.
