TKC SUNDAY SPECIAL: WILL MAYOR-ELECT QUINTON LUCAS MOVE KCMO TOWARD 'SANCTUARY CITY' STATUS?!?!
In this divisive political climate even His background is up for debate but, generally, a great many people think of Jesus Christ as a broke-ass refugee who ran with the scum of the Earth and was eventually executed because of the threat of political insurrection.
The Biblical record tell us that Jesus and his family were forced to take REFUGE in a flight into Egypt rather than suffer the Massacre of the Innocents ordered by King Herod.
And whilst we don't want to dwell on theology, on this rainy Sunday all of this backstory brings us to the topic of sanctuary.
Here's a more recent part of KCMO campaign lore which was omitted by nearly every other Kansas City news outlet because it's a stance that holds very little favor even among hard-line Democratic Party supporters . . .
As part of his "racial justice" campaign platform, Mayoral Winner Quinton Lucas promised to work toward a KCMO Municipal ID Card that provides residents identification regardless of immigration status
And very much like Jesus, if Mayor-Elect Quinton Lucas keeps this promise he will be politically crucified by both friends an enemies alike . . .
A few quick reason why . . .
- Many young African-Americans are aligned with Prez Trump in his immigration crackdown efforts. They claim to have witnessed economic competition in their own communities wherein low-wage illegal immigrant workers take jobs that MIGHT have gone to the Black community. The economics of this thesis might not hold true but the meme is effective enough to work or at least give people an excuse not to work and, instead, complain on the Internets.
- Mainstream Democratic Party denizens know their side of the immigration debate issue is a loser. A wave of historic American populism has powered Prez Trump's rise to power and throughout history people generally dislike foreigners. Reality on the faith-life of the American electoate: A peaceful, prosperous and inspiring world without borders is a tougher sell than an imaginary wall.
- Kansas City Latino leaders picked Jolie Justus. Quinton Lucas attempted to cozy up to small-timers with little-to-no political influence or ability to garner votes but the fact is that from the KC Hispanic Chamber on down . . . Latino leaders were on the wrong side of the election and the new Mayor owes them VERY LITTLE.
Meanwhile . . .
Keeping the Municipal ID Card promise puts Quinton Lucas on the wrong side of the current Administration that still has a VERY GOOD chance at staying in power for another 4 years after 2020.
And so we ask, as a Sunday promise of massive deportations has been stalled for the moment, and the political fight over immigration now takes on a more immediate municipal interest:
SHOULD MAYOR-ELECT QUINTON LUCAS BREAK HIS MUNICIPAL ID CARD PROMISE THAT RISKS PUSHING KCMO TOWARD SANCTUARY CITY STATUS?!?!
Given that Mexico is 'So far from God, so close to the US' local Latinos are accustomed to disappointment - After all, there hasn't been Hispanic representation on the Council for about 30 years despite burgeoning LEGAL population numbers.
And so we're anxious to gauge reader opinion on this topic as the REAL border war that's only getting started now includes a major aspect of the new mayor's campaign platform.
