TKC DEAD-TREE DECLINE SNEAK PEEK!!! DOWNSIZE PREVIEW: KANSAS CITY STAR PARENT COMPANY 'EXPERIMENTS' WITH KILLING SATURDAY PRINT EDITION!!!

Some of the smartest readers who sometimes check TKC just sent us an interesting journalism development that reminds us of a prediction about the fate of the local paper we made not so long ago . . . Maybe 9 years or more . . . This is the way the paper ends:

WITNESS THE KC STAR CORPORATE PARENT "EXPERIMENTING" WITH DESPERATE PRINTING CUTS!!! WILL IT WORK TO SAVE THE NEWSPAPER?!?

Sadly, this move only solves half of the equation.

Sure, cutting costs is might be helpful but that won't help wrestle cash away from Google & Facebook who take most of the Internets advertising cash and have far more reach and digital infrastructure than any publication could ever hope to establish. Moreover, newspaper profits were never strictly a pure biz-to-biz advertising play . . . Classifieds funded newspapers during their glory days and now social media is a much more effective and FREE way to send mostly ignored messages out into the void.

Digital subscriptions are seen as the newspaper's saving grace but in a world people have ALWAYS only read headlines and lead sentences to form their opinion, share and talk a story to death . . . Relying on readers to pay for content remains a long shot.

Here's the sitch:

McClatchy announces an experiment to eliminate one day of print for two papers — but with an enhanced online experience and no job losses.

Deets:

In April, the McClatchy-owned Myrtle Beach (South Carolina) Sun News went from publishing a print product seven days a week to six. It cut the print edition and produced only digital stories on Saturdays. Because digital activation increased 8% in one month, revenue was not impacted and virtually no one cancelled their subscription, McClatchy is adding two more papers to what it calls “Digital Saturdays.” The Durham (North Carolina) Herald Sun and the Bellingham (Washington) Herald will no longer print on Saturdays, starting July 6.

This initiative is headed up by Sara Glines, McClatchy’s Carolinas & East regions president and publisher. And she wants to be clear with readers of those papers.

“You’re going to get all the same content that you got before,” Glines said. “You’re just going to get it in a different way.”

In fact, Glines said readers will get more. Extra comics and puzzles will appear in the Friday and Sunday print editions. And the Saturday e-edition will include even more international, national, sports and entertainment coverage than the Saturday print edition normally carried.

Nothing will save the Star and its overpaid so called journalists need to learn to code or seek employment/importance elsewhere.

  9. SOMETIME LATER THIS YEAR THE STAR WILL STOP PUBLISHING AS MANY AS THREE OF THEIR DAILY EDITIONS!!!

    That year being 2009.

Meanwhile, a decade later, this exciting EXCLUSIVE news from Tony STILL hasn't come to pass.

    1. Damn, it's way past time the silly Star collect those empty blue boxes and get paid for the recycled metal!6/6/19, 12:57 PM

A decade later the content is down to less than half. Paragraph and word spacing is wider. Ads are far fewer, weekdays, and down noticeably for most Sundays. Plus, typos and awkward sentence structures are more frequent. Retail prices have risen 3 times in 10 years! The falling Star sucks!
