KANSAS CITY JUNE 18TH ELECTION REMINDER: CITY HALL LIED ABOUT PRO TEAMS FOR THE SPRINT CENTER!!!

A recent double take from the discourse . . . We talked about classic broken promises from local politicos a few days ago and now the fun fact is not only a redux story but also a reaffirmation that the so-called downtown renaissance was built on a lie. Read more:

  1. We are a Cowtown. We really don’t need a hockey team or an NBA team and wouldn’t support one.

  2. Most of us knew this was all a scam to get people all excited to get the Sprint Center built.

The airport fiasco is the latest huge lie the taxpayers will be on the hook for.

  3. That Sprint Center building is butt ugly!

One can be that if city hall is for something there will always be one or more lies eventually coming out of the closet.

  5. The blacks want the basketball even though they won’t pay or can even afford to go, guess who we had for a pro hockey team in the past? Yes folks it was the Kansas City blues! Yup, the same blues that are in shitty Louis, there just isn’t enough support for hockey or basketball. Never was and never will be.

    1. RUGBY....let's hear it for....the mud, the blood, and the beer!6/11/19, 10:48 AM

You might be thinking of KC Blues Rugby. It began in 1966, and the registered "club" team (the old school nomenclature is "amateur", but the men's and women's teams are pros at kick ass rugby!) is still going strong. My brother was a Blues bro in the mid 70s while a KU student. They had some X-rated team chants and songs in German, and the tamer ones in Gaelic and English.

  6. The Sprint Center was pushed solely by the talking heads on sports talk radio. THEY said we would get a pro team first. That set the table.
The truth is and always will be that to have those teams you have to have corporate headquarters in town from the top 500 companies in the US or world, we don't. I knew from the daily talk of "we need a new arena" on the radio it would not happen. I didn't fall for their lies and buy into their rhetoric.

  7. @7:21 Kansas City had the Scouts not the Blues.

  8. Ok, so no pro team as a tenant for the Sprint Center. Given Big 12 basketball tournament, other early season college basketball tournaments, the concert line up and other various events that KC would probably not be getting.....good decision to build it or not?

  9. Don’t let the sports talk show hosts have a say . That ass Kevin on 810 is an idiot. Build a downtown stadium and they will come.
Just what KC needs another empty stadium that taxpayers will be footing the bill.

  10. "KC a longshot for getting the NBA or NHL...." Let's file that under the "No shit!" category. Sprint Center was built on a lie. Blame the city or sports talk show hosts or whoever, we were told if we approved the financing for Sprint Center then we could get an NHL or NBA team. They even dangled the Penguins in our faces as "proof". The Penguins and Lemieux were never interested in coming to KC. They just wanted to use KC as leverage to get what they wanted in Pittsburgh.

Maybe "Boots" DelBagio, or whatever his name was, was serious about moving the Predators here some years back. But he was a crook and that idea fizzled out.

Even now, the NBA is looking to expand to Seattle and, to my knowledge, Seattle doesn't even have a stadium and already lost a team that had a young superstar in Durant some years back. So that tells you what the NBA thinks about KC as a sports town.

As far as hockey goes, there's not enough ice rinks in KC right now to foster the growth of a hockey culture. NHL21 has been trying for a decade to get hockey to KC and probably aren't any closer now than they were then.

As much as we'd all like it to happen, it just isn't in the cards folks. So 5-10 years from now, when the city is trying to pass a tax to renovate Sprint Center, or worse yet build a new arena, and they are dangling the idea of, "if we pass this tax the NBA or NHL may come", remember the lie that got Sprint Center built in the first place.

  11. Sprint Center being built was a good move for KC. Kemper was a dump down by the railroad tracks where no one goes. I'm glad we have sprint center. It still would be a lot better with a pro team and the sprint center is going to start showing its age soon and need renovation money...still a town needs an arena and Kemper was a piece of shit

  12. I remember when it was proposed I was all for the Sprint Center. Now, I see it has a giant waste of money.

Kay Waldo-Cronkite-Whatever-Barnes and Steve "Slimeball" Glorioso lied to us. They knew an NBA/NHL team was never going to come. Not without at least a million more people in the metro.

And here is the dirty secret of the SC. We were getting good concerts before it was built. Most concerts are not about venue, but the location to other larger cities. KC is pretty far out from St. Louis, Omaha and Witchita. That's why we get all these concerts.

Want to know another dirty secret? The Big 12 basketball tournament was never going to leave too. Sure, it may go to Texas lets say two out of five times. But KC would have always been in the mix because of the lack of pro arena teams in the city.

  13. 7:45 it was the Kansas City blues back in the sixties, they went to shitty Louis after a few years here, maybe you should look it up before you say something stupid again. Damn kids don’t know shit! Hahahahaha!

  14. The Sprint Center is doing quite well the way it is. This city and the surrounding area doesn't have the disposable income dollars to support another pro team in any sport. Either pro team would take away a minimum 50 calendar dates during their seasons which run Mid-Sept.-mid-May with average ticket prices that rival Chiefs games. Leave it alone. The idea to build a baseball stadium downtown is a terrible idea as well.

  15. Another juicy tidbit is the Kansas City scouts left and became the Colorado Rockies, two teams left and became big time hockey teams in other cities

  16. @12:53 - The KC Blues hockey team was not an NHL team; it was minor league. The St. Louis Blues were an expansion team. Not at all the same team.

You seriously shouldn't shit on people when you have no idea what you're talking about.

    ReplyDelete
  17. @12:55pm I disagree with that. The city will have you believe that, specifically the idea that the Sprint Center doesn't need a pro-sports tenant, but it's false. You didn't hear that story back before the SC was built and when they were trying to drub up support for the vote. The City and everyone involved were not concerned at all about the city not being able to support another professional team. It was quite the contrary. "If we build SC we can have another pro team", right? Remember that?

The dirty little secret that everyone forgets is that the city NEEDS more events at the SC. Tax payers are paying over $10 million per year to cover the bonds on the P&L District due to the FACT that the city and Cordish over shot their projections on the performance of the P&L horribly. More dates in the SC would greatly help that problem. Sure the KC team would suck but nights where Golden State was visiting, or LeBron was in town or whoever would be huge draws and would help with the debt the city has taken on to revitalize downtown as it would bring more people downtown to spend money when they otherwise wouldn't.

So I do not believe the narrative that the City doesn't need an anchor tenant in the Sprint Center. It does. We do. And the city telling you otherwise is them trying to put lipstick on a pig. The SC has been successful. But not successful enough. And the city, although they won't admit it, knows it.

  18. There isn't a single fortune 500 company with a HQ in KC. There are four in Omaha. We are lucky to have the teams we have. An NBA or hockey team is a fantasy. Using it as an enticement to take on the debt to build Sprint center was just chamber-types boosterism. The post above about debt payments that the city has to step in and cover bc P&L falls way short on revenues vs debt payments-that is the best point raised so far here.

Look around power and light district. Getting some age on it now. Does it look like $300 million??? Would be funny if it weren't so tragic to our city's future.

  19. Kansas City had a pro NBA team. They are known as the Sacramento Kings. Couldn't support it then not happening now. Kevin Kietzmann is a putz. Needs to crawl back in his hole.

  20. 1:36 doesn’t matter dipshit, they came from killa shitty and went on to become a pro hockey team in shitty Louis, god you’re a dumb ass.

You seriously shouldn't shit on people when you have no idea what you're talking about.

  21. I think KC could support a BBall team. I think that would be cool af. Kansas City has always been a basketball town. I't would be neat to see a huge local crowd come downtown and spend money in their city every home game.

  22. @10:48, having been in Rolla, around St. Pat's days rugby people throw a helluva party. Everybody is nice cause everybody else can really do some damage in a fight. Chubby girls willing to do whatever everywhere. I mean, where else to you see a gaggle of sorority girls with their freshman 35 unloading a keg at 9AM? Ending the day with topless mudslides down the hill? Nowhere I tell ya. Good times for all.

The Kansas City Blues were a Central Hockey league team and an affiliate of the St. Louis Blues. They played at the old American Royal arena in 1967 while the St Louis Blues were an NHL team playing in St Louis. Here is more on the facts.

The Kansas City Blues were a minor-league hockey team based in Kansas City, Missouri that played in the Central Hockey League from 1967 to 1972, and again in the 1976-77 season, mainly as an affiliate of the in-state St. Louis Blues of the National Hockey League.
