St. Luke's Kills Kansas City Neighborhood

Credit to the better commenters among our blog community who saw this one coming about a month ago . . . Now newsie Babs follows up with some long form complaining about ongoing local gentrification that's not going to change despite her insipid prose. Checkit:

St. Luke's wants to preserve the residential neighborhood between the Plaza and Westport - by building half-million dollar homes there

Barb Shelly Recently, the foundation connected to St. Luke's Health System has announced plans to start construction on 30 new homes in the neighborhood west of its flagship hospital in Kansas City. The single-family houses, which are expected to sell for around half a million dollars, will "enhance and revitalize" the neighborhood, according to a news release from the St.

  1. Shit gets more expensive every year no matter where you are. You should see the kind of stuff going on in Austin, Denver, and cities across the US. I'm not necessarily against any of this because it does improve the city the right way instead of propping it up like down in the jazz district. Rising tide lifts all boats, etc. This prices people like me out but it allows for other neighborhoods like the east side and parts of waldo to pick up the mantle of a more middle class neighborhood so that they can be improved here. KC seems to be improving everywhere, except in city services and anything that the city council mayor touches.

  4. This investment is only positive for this area. Basically there are condominiums, and homes which are bungalows which are mostly in need of attention. A good portion of these homes are rentals.
The folks who are concerned about investment having a negative effect on a neighborhood do not understand progress.

  7. They can enjoy the sound of sirens, helicopters, jackhammers, and gun fire from their front porches pretty good deal for starting at 500K.

  8. That's a pricey house for a dangerous area. I'm surprised that wealthy people would live there. Then again, a prog lawyer chick I knew, had a friend get held-up at gun point on the plaza. Lawyer chick stayed in her condo for 3 more years, happy as a clam.

  10. That area has such an interesting history. For years, it was occupied by
African American families who were descendants of the slaves in the plantation located in that area. I remember that they considered themselves the "elite" of Kansas City black society because they had such a long history in the area and were home owners in a predominately white part of the city. I guess those days are gone. The "elite" blacks now live in Leawood, Overland Park, and Lees Summit. But it is sad that the traditional neighborhood changed, and not for the better.

    1. There is no such thing as “elite” blacks. How’s that for a history lesson?

  11. ^^Wow, thanks for the history lesson. Didn't ask for it, don't want it, and find it utterly stupid and worthless.
