Kansas City Last Call: Country Club Plaza Tomfooleries Shuts Down Today

Local drinkers and aficionados of fried bar food mark a sad occasion today as a longtime Plaza pub closes its doors after more than 25 years in business. When the news broke only our blog community talked about increasing violence and culture war customer service showdowns which threatened the establishment throughout 2018.

Meanwhile, the offerings in this entertainment district grow even more generic as merchants struggle to cope with an urban core marketplace that is not only increasingly fickle but also dangerous for purveyors of America's drug of choice.

Tomfooleries on Plaza closing Saturday

Tomfooleries on the Country Club Plaza will close its doors for good on Saturday. The owner plans a new restaurant called Beer 30.

  1. Off topic I know but these guys pioneered mozzarella sticks way before they hit the popular culture and they need to get at least a mention for that great work. The used to draw big crowds to serve those and it was back when KC actually had more local restaurants on the Plaza.

You're right it's a different environment now and now just because of the crime. Restaurants are even more disposable and it's doubtful we'll see very many long time places at one location any more.

  2. Let's put in some national chain that serves e-coli laced artisan stuff. Get things up to date on the Plaza.

  3. So what’s to gain by the blacks destroying everything they touch? Do they even understand the consequences of their actions? Don’t they realize that when they are done destroying everything that there’s nothing left for them? Will they ever learn?

    1. Blacks have clearly destroyed any hope of happiness or contentment in this world for you. You blame the blacks for your personal sorrows and dark secrets. You can keep this up forever. Nobody cares about your opinion on race issues. You're hopeless. Pissing in the wind. Find another outlet for your frustration.

  5. ^^^^ +1 at 4:15. @3:43 is a loser with no real insight or views to share.

There is a good discussion to have about what's happening on the plaza in terms of development and residential issues. But haters hijacking the subject just makes things stupifying. Probably somebody who can't get a following on Twitter either.

  6. Build the wall and save the plaza?

    Doubtful.

  7. But why is the plaza falling apart? The koloreds is why, any new business moving in doesn’t change that fact, facts are facts

  8. 4:26 what's the matter, the facts just to much for you to understand?

Last two shootings on the Plaza was done by what?
Last two shootings at Oak Park was done by what?

  11. Nobody wants black people at the Plaza or anywhere really. Even our black buffoon of a mayor wants them nowhere near downtown.

  12. No doubt 4:15 and 4:26 think they’re superior and enlightened for pretending that there isn’t a very clear common denominator among the problems in many areas of KCMO, including the Plaza. Whether it’s “teens” harassing patrons and pushing prom goers into fountains, or older, more violent types shooting innocent bystanders, the culprits are always negroes. Pretending that this isn’t factual only exacerbates the problems.

  14. So sad that racists think their opinion matters. They spam this blog all day and nobody is paying them for it. Just racist losers that serve as a reminder of wasted pathetic lives in KC. Their racism hasn't helped that whatsoever.

  15. ^^^^ Sometimes they make me laugh and that is fun.

I wish they weren't so dour. MOst of them have absolutely no sense of humor and their comments seem desperate. But there are a few with some insight and I guess that makes it worth it.

  16. Here's a some advice children, when you see those people who just rant about blacks and spew racism at every opportunity. They are losers. They don't have anything relevant to say and they just repeat the same old vitriolic garbage to try and seem shocking but it's really just a cry for help. It's a sign that they are unsuccessful and now they're looking for somebody to blame.

    1. What you call "racists" are actually "realists." They've examined the facts and made conclusions based on those facts. It's not racist to say negroes bring down property values, ruin business districts and are much more violent than white humans. This has all been proven over and over. It'a a factual statement.

But go live in your fantasy kumbaya world if you so choose. It'll cost you much more than it already has.

Blacks ruined the place just like blacks ruin everything they come in contact with.

Every store on the plaza can close as long as nobody blames it on the negroes.

I think they mostly talked about how much they hated black people.

And chuck chimed in, too. So you know it's true.

    1. The problem is that you have no arguments in the face of facts that make you uncomfortable.

  20. The shootings and rowdy groups don't help the Plaza any but the Mall landlords are the real problem here. Once they started replacing unique upscale stores with teen appeal chains, the clock started ticking. The clientele was shifting down but the rents kept going up.

There was a small jewelry store that closed because it kept getting robbed.

Plaza III didn't close...it moved to where the money is, Johnson County. The young & middle-aged $$$ not afraid of modern technology can get their high-life drink on and pay less for the Uber home.

I'm wondering if Nordstrom is having second thoughts on the Plaza location. They're leaving one destabilizing location for another one.

And last...but should be #1...the panhandlers. When the city's "premier shopping district" is OK with, or powerless to deal with mentally ill people standing around with urine running down their leg in broad daylight then it's done.
