TKC SUNDAY SPECIAL!!! KANSAS CITY LATINO LEADERSHIP PERSPECTIVE ON MLK RENAME OF THE PASEO REVEALED!!!

The fight over the MLK rename on the Paseo intensifies as a decision looms.

In fact, opinions are so strong behind the scenes that people actually care what some denizens of the local Latino leadership think.

In a recent Northeast News column, the KCMO Hispanic community is called out:

"Strangely absent from this conversation is the city’s Latino community. Where are groups like the LaRaza Political Club or the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce? The Hispanic Economic Development Committee, The Mattie Rhodes Center, and the Guadalupe Center haven’t entered the fray either. These heavy hitters have weighed in on issues with far fewer political implications and made their voices heard, often enacting change in the process. One would certainly think that if roughly 110 years of rich cultural heritage was stripped from the city’s history books as Councilman Lucas’ ridiculous ordinance would do, there would be rioting in the streets. The only thing we’re hearing from these groups, sadly, is crickets. Is Councilman Lucas that much of a political juggernaut that he is not to be tussled with?"

The argument, is basically on the opposite end of Prof. Kraske's recent silly column asking for a Latino community alliance with the Revs pushing the move for their community.

To be fair, NE News is much more relevant and insightful.

The history:

The name for Kansas City's first major boulevard was suggested by the first President of the Parks Board, August R. Meyer, based on the Paseo de la Reforma in Mexico City. The parkway was laid out in the early 1900s by George Kessler under the direction of the first president of the Commission of Parks.

The far-too-common mistake among the gringos . . .

Expecting KC Latino leadership to care about some street a couple of white guys named a century ago is a bit of stretch. The name might reference Mexico but local Latinos are more connected to a street like Avenida Cesar Chavez that they had a voice in naming in much the same way as East side activists are working to rename The Paseo.

Fact is, urban, working-class and largely progressive Latinos and their leadership are more apt to side with activists in support of the MLK name change.

HOWEVER . . . NO COMMUNITY IS MONOLITHIC!!!

Parks Board President Jean-Paul Chaurand is one of the younger Latino leaders in KCMO BUT he's standing with his colleagues questioning the rename based on issues of cost and city policy.

Latino community insiders report that the issue has been broached but not really debated during Black/Brown coalition meetings . . . However, the recent elections and upcoming City Council & Mayoral contests are of far greater concern.

And so, the reality is that opinion within the Latino community is just as diverse as any other part of Kansas City as we all wait for Mayor & Council to show some leadership on this issue that has been sparking surprisingly divisive debate in this town for most of 2018.

Developing . . .

    2. Another Blue wave would solve this problem!

Actually no, what I object to is an issue I saw on this blog before, the royalty we're going to have to pay to the King family. And the cost of the renamed needs to be included in the ordinance. If you're going to change it, then be honest with people, don't use more backroom tricks like Councilman Lucas.

  2. Fuck MLK. More fucking money spent on worthless shit. Fix the potholes, sidewalks, abandoned houses, weeds, trash etc., rather than sending more goddamned taxpayer's money to the fucking King family.

Another blatant waste of bucks just to get votes. As bad as millions poured into the 18th and Vine black hole.

Take a ride on the toy today?? Another boondoggle. The airport will be the worst. Will bankrupt this shitty. Fuck MLK.

  3. I'd rather call it La Cucaracha Blvd over MLK. I'd rather it named for a latino leader over a black leader. Latinos works their ass off, blacks not so much.

  4. Chavez was violently (And he proved it with violence.) AGAINST illegal immigration.

"Chavez, the man the Left loves to name drop for his role in organizing all-those grape and lettuce and melon pickers in the day.

But there is a considerable twist to the story. In fact, Cesar Chavez believed ferociously in the border of the United States — because that border protected his union. So ferociously did he hold this view that the New York Times ran a story detailing an accusation that the union Chavez founded, the United Farm Workers, set up a 100 mile “wet line” to keep “wetbacks” and “illegals” — yes, all of those are Chavez’s words — out of the United States."

  11. Nobody will answer the question I’ve been asking for two months now, the question is how much are we already paying the king family for a park and a school named after mlk already? The park is on blue pkwy between the Paseo and 71hwy, and the elementary school is next to Paseo h.s..

    Answers anybody?

  13. G. Gordon Liddy had a radio show in the 90's on 1340 (?) AM. He did a show on the FBI and the Kennedy's tracking MLK activities. The FBI report came back that MLK was sleeping with white girls. No big deal for a brother to get some white stuff. The big deal was these white girls were foreign agents putting ideas in his head. Strange times in the 60's.

  15. Good point, 10:28. But I'm with 8:31. Rename Cleaver II Boulevard Martin Luther King Jr. Street, and then change the name of Benton Blvd. to Willie Horton Avenue.

    1. No11:25 that'd dishonor sen Thomas Hart Benton to de-name the Blvd after him. He was our senator for four terms so deserves a street I guess even though he was a slaveholder he became devotrd to the free soil movement and was against resdcinding the Missouri compromise

  16. Willie Horton street? Why not name it after petersucker instead since she’s doing exactly what Massachusetts was doing by releasing black murderous thugs with no regard for heath, safety or welfare of the general public.

  17. In 25 years, all the negroes will be living in Lee’s summit, blue Springd and up north. The white people will be living on the Paseo rehabbing it’s remains. I doubt they want a street named after a philandering plagiarist negro. The fat fake revs will be in hell.
