It's May Day and many supporters of organized labor in Kansas City mark the occasion with a celebration of International Workers Day amid the ongoing struggle over collective bargaining.

IN KANSAS CITY ORGANIZED LABOR IS DIVIDED AMONG THE ESTABLISHMENT UNION FIGHT FOR FAIR WAGE FAST FOOD PROGRESS VS. MORE RADICAL COMMIE ACTIVISTS!!!
First, the foodies . . .
Stand Up KC is a movement supported by labor unions across the nation. They've earned praise from Prez Obama's White House and launched several efforts to increase the Kansas City minimum wage to $15.
Stand Up KC is planning to launch an updated "Poor People's Campaign" and civil disobedience training just in time for the start of midterm election season.
And then . . .
Far more radical and fun is the alphabet soup of local organizations who tout Communism, anarchy and sometimes violence.
The Progressive Youth Organization, Red Guards Kansas City and KC Democratic Socialists of America are probably the dominant radical labor/communist/ANTIFA groups in town.
KCIWW.org also deserves a shout out but also a note that they DO NOT advocate violence.
It would be inappropriate to lump all of these groups as ANTIFA but they certainly have alliances with that movement as well.
Back to today's celebration . . .
The Red Guards KCMO prepared a statement deserves another highlight today in order to offer perspective of the local May Day discourse and a WARNING of their plans to step up their strident form of activism . . .
"We are watching our planet die, burned and constricted by massive deforestation, haphazard mining, pollution, and overconsumption all to increase corporate profit. Make no mistake; this is not the sign of a healthy economic and political system. This is not the sign of a world built on the promise of an equitable future. This is not the sign of the “End of History” where people all across the planet will shed all divisions under the reactionary lie of capitalist wrung social order. Make no mistake; we are witnessing a wounded rabid beast bleeding out, clawing at any it can reach with the full intent of dragging us to our graves. We are witnessing the death of an unsustainable system. We are witnessing the death of capitalism. And if we do not fight it, then this dying beast will push us towards our own extinction.
"It is only in class struggle, the seizing of power by working class people from the bourgeois capitalists, will we bring forth a future of life and freedom. This class struggle is not a new phenomenon, but is bred from over a century of revolutionary proletarian practice."
And here's what's most important . . .
In recent protest against Prez Trump, armed demonstrations countering gun-toting Three Percenters, threats against racist death metal bands and immigrant rights rallies -- Radical, ANTIFA and pro-labor groups are increasingly flexing their muscle and displaying growing numbers in Kansas City.
On this May Day most mainstream media outlets ignore the trend and barely focus on popular labor efforts while it's clear the local conversation regarding labor and workers rights in the era of Prez Trump is becoming increasingly radical and extremist.

DeleteThe bigger trend is that UMKC is pretty much commie central for Kansas City. That's kind of neat but doesn't fit well at all with the rising tuition costs and how the university has failed over decades to do much recruitment inside the city.
DeleteAlso, pretty sure the international students shy away from that commie stuff because some of them have seen the real life enactment of brutal regimes under the same flags and know the idealism fades quickly.
