Brittany Green and Brett Kreikemeier brought their two dogs with them to visit relatives in Lee's Summit for the holidays. But the couple's 1-year-old lab mix, Daisy, ran away on Dec. 23 when they think a train spooked her and caused her to run off. "Every single night I was crying," Green said.

Along Ward Parkway near 60th Street, a small frozen pond serves as a makeshift ice skating rink as temperatures dance near and even below 0 degrees. "We were just playing on the ice having some fun," 10-year-old Henry Zwillenberg said. "We live right down the street so perfect spot," his brother Jackson said.

With near record cold, dispatchers all over the metro area are receiving more animal control related calls this week with neighbors complaining about animals being left out in the cold.
