TKC BLOG COMMUNITY TOLD YOU SO!!! KMBC PREZ SARAH SMITH SEYZ SCHLITTERBAHN SHOULD SHUT DOWN DEADLY VERRÜCKT WATER SLIDE!!!

Finally some reason and responsibility from the media outlet in Kansas City that has consistently held the greatest viewer ratings.

And again TV news leads the game and CONFIRMS the opinion of our blog community when we suggested as much earlier this August.

Checkit:

Editoral from KMBC/KCWE President Sarah Smith: Verruckt should come down

Money line:

"No government agency inspected that slide prior to the accident. The Wyandotte County Health Department's scope of work only includes low level minor safety issues such as slip hazards around the pools.

Schlitterbahn hires its own third-party inspectors. Most of us assumed there was state oversight. Now we know there isn't. Our lawmakers need to act quickly and require water parks and amusement parks are carefully examined on a regular basis before we put another life at risk.

And once the criminal investigation is done, Verruckt should be torn down."

Moreover . . .

TKC RESPECTS THE BRAVERY OF MS. SMITH IN MAKING A REASONED PLEA . . . HOWEVER, OUR TKC BLOG COMMUNITY ISN'T AS NICE AND WE REPEAT OUR DEMAND TO TEAR DOWN THIS RIDE FOREVER AFTER THE INVESTIGATION IS COMPLETE AND SO THAT NOBODY ELSE SUFFERS A TRAGIC DECAPITATION!!!

You decide . . .

Comments

  1. Good for her, it's about time we had some common sense in the media. What's more, I'm sure she's taking a risk because Schlitterbahn is a big advertiser in the metro but sometimes it's more important to do the right thing.

We should have seen this opinion first from our editorial staff at daily newspapers but I'm glad this brave woman is standing up and saying it now.

  2. There will always be idiots who want to take their chances. Responsible people need to step up and demand sanity and public accountability.

Sarah Smith is doing the right thing.

  3. Somebody finally agrees with you Tk. Things really are getting strange in CKmo.

  4. Wonder how the kids dad is feeling now about the Republican mantra of less government and less regulations are ALWAYS better? These are people who would do away with the EPA if they had their way. I work in an industry heavily regulated by the EPA, MSHA, and a multitude of others. Does it cost my company millions every year? Yes, and we need it. Without laws our air and water would be like China's, probably worse because we have decades of a head start on the Chinese. If you think corporations would be good stewards of the environment, safe working conditions, or things like water park rides, think again. They wouldn't spend a penny on any of that if they didn't have to.

  8. Does the lovely KMBC PREZ SARAH SMITH have any opinion on the criminal investigation into the murder of two poor, east side school children recently?

  9. She kind'a looks like Sam Smith in drag.

  10. "Most of us ASSUMED that there was state oversight".
Not the most encouraging observation from someone who is supposed to be in the news business.
What other ASSUMPTIONS are her station's stories based on?

  11. Ummm nothing from Cum Guy? Says a lot. Ugly, bitchy and opinionated. Just what a guy doesn't want in bed.

  12. Sara (I cant run a TV station, but I can tell everyone else what to do) Smith should shut her pie hole. She only gets air time because she orders it as boss. However, Tony should be happy. She just gave him another reason to milk this fucking tired ass story one more miserable ass time.

  13. Government inspectors also failed - Hyatt, Minnesota bridge, and so on. The ride is insured and will pay out millions. Inspectors are as good public or private. I wouldn't build something that could kill or injure without being fully insured and inspected at a level to give me assurance. Prayers for the young man's family.

  14. Shut the thing down, it should have never been built in the 1st place.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Bring it down. Who could look at it without seeing that in their minds? Must go. Adios, Veruckt.

  16. Sarah Amith assumes, without any proof I'm aware of, that government inspections in general are superior to private third party inspections, AND/OR that a government inspection would have disclosed a particular danger which a private inspection missed. She needs to make that case with facts and logic, not assumptions. Meanwhile she's the leading contender for the Mary Sanchez Sloppy Thinking In Journalism award.

  17. I really have to question the logic Ms. Smith or any of the others so convinced that government regulation of this stupid water slide would have changed the outcome. There isn't any regulation that is more feared than cancellation of an insurance policy.

Let's think for a moment about what is likely to be the future of this slide and it's owner. They will likely be sued and they will likely lose any such action if it were to go to trial (it won't). In consideration of whether or not to reopen the slide, the owner will face two big questions: Will enough patrons desire to ride on this thing to make a profit? Will an insurer issue a policy to cover the owner's liability in running it?

My guess is that it never opens again. All that without an ounce of government effort expended.

  18. KMBC has struggled to stay in the #1 spot and they have lot it a couple of times, if they keep operating like this and giving opinion instead of just the facts people will tune out.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I think KMBC should close down too.

  20. ...the same government that blew up a space shuttle??? Oh hell yeah! I'm just chomping at the bit to feel all safe and shit now.

  21. Since when does government equal safety? Take a look at how many guns get past the TSA while they're hastling grandma out of her wheelchair. If anything, private inspectors working for Schlitterbahn bad more to lose than a government hack. As for shutting it down -bullcrap...you could die doing almost anything, thousands rode that slide and sirvived. Walking in 18th and Vine is much riskier, yet they demand free money.

  22. A RESPONSE TO SARAH SMITH'S COMMENTS

    Dear Ms. Smith,

While I don't know you, or watch your station's news reports, I do know something about your local broadcast television business. Specifically, you're not in the "news" business per se, but rather in the advertising business. "News" or the entertainment that passes for news these days is merely the vehicle with which you generate your advertising revenue. For anyone thinking critically about this issue, it's rather self-evident that your priority is not in accurate investigative broadcast journalism to best serve the public, but to promote an artificial atmosphere of shallow superficiality.

What exactly is the purpose of your above editorial? Most Kansas City metro residents have no idea who you are, and frankly, are correct in not caring about your offered opinion. I contend that your editorial is simply more advertising. Well after the fact, when most residents have stopped discussing the tragic death of a young boy, you felt it was safe to step forward and lecture lawmakers and the general public with a "hands on hips" reprimand, seeking to project an image of wise public steward. Ms. Smith, we clearly see your foolishness and hypocrisy, and don't appreciate the attitude.

Instead of stooping to "Monday morning quarterback" tactics, perhaps metro residents would like to know why KMBC/KCWE failed to report on the issue of waterpark safety BEFORE this recent tragedy. After all, it's a matter of public record that this particular water slide experienced multiple close calls prior to the recent death. If KMBC/KCWE was acting proactively on behalf of the public interest, instead of reacting after the fact, it's possible that your station could have prevented the death of an innocent young child. But then again, we know why you don't operate that way. When you're business model revolves around selling advertising, and your priority is generating maximum revenue, it may not be in your selfish interest to call out businesses, organizations, and individuals who are operating in an illegal, unethical, or unsafe manner.

As for tearing down the Verruckt slide, Ms. Smith is once again incorrect. She might have a leg to stand on, if she'd previously publicly stated that General Motors should discontinue making cars after their ignition switch fiasco, that ObamaCare should cease and desist after quickly failing to fulfill promises, or that our local ToyTrain is nothing but a tourist boondoggle....but, of course, she did none of those things.

I'll leave you now, and let you check in with your on-air staff of Ken's, Barbie's, and bobble-head cheerleaders. Oh, and Ms. Smith, let me personally thank you for keeping viewers up-to-date with the latest Hollywood gossip and entertainment news, while omitting any mention of the corruption emanating from City Hall, scheming local developers, corporate welfare programs, the Obama administration, and Hillary Clinton's campaign...just to mention a few.

P.S. Wasn't it KMBC that was guilty of sex/age discrimination against their female employees several years ago? Ah yes, it seems that while retaining a male anchor well into his 60's or 70's, station management was telling female anchors and reporters in their 40's to hit the road. Advertising can be such a discriminating endeavor!
