Council Lady Melba Curls is termed out and it's a feeding frenzy to fight for her job.
Right away, we want to remind everybody that there's still the lingering rumor that Monica Curls (Melba's daughter) might want to get into this thing and she would have the advantage that she has pretty much been the incumbent Council woman in charge for about 2 years behind the scenes. The name recognition would pave the way for her along with other contacts BUT others tell us that there's no way she wants the headaches and would rather see somebody else get the job.

Kansas City Public School Board Vice Prez Crispin Rea
No, he's not a cousin to TKC. We've only endorsed two candidates in the history of this blog and we're simply calling this election based on SCIENTIFIC market research.
Crispin Rea is ranked as the early leader in this 3rd District At-Large election because . . .
- He has KCMO Former Top Cop Support
- The elite Kansas City lawyers have already endorsed Crispin.
- Northland Political Power Broker Bill Skaggs made a VERY noteworthy endorsement.
- Fair play . . . YEARS of Union busting @ The KCPS is Crispin's Achilles heel - That's why Monica and her incumbent Union connections could easily win this thing.
No, this isn't Latino pride because I'm pretty sure my Spanish is better than Crispin's (which isn't saying much), we're not from the same neighborhood and I think it'll be more fun to play the Latino card in the 4th District race in order to witness the KCMO LGBTQIA Community get frustrated and start making racial slurs (lulz) . . . So only d-bags who are desperate would deny our TKC science. It's early in the race and a lot of things could change but our ranking is most certainly DEFINITIVE.
Quinton Lucas
Right now this law professor out in Lawrence, Ks. with excellent elocution is the only hope to combat Crispin's early lead. He's still not in this thing officially but insiders say that Crispin got in the race so early and dropped so many endorsement bombshells SPECIFICALLY to take an early lead against Mr. Lucas.
Dee Evans
Dee Evans is a local activist and Freedom, Inc. Insider and she's already making this thing racial. She hasn't earned the endorsement yet but the Freedom, Inc. connection will destroy her in the Northland. Moreover, people don't realize that THIS UPCOMING ELECTION will FINALLY demonstrate the POWER of Kansas City's greatest hinterland enclave . . . Far beyond the Forward KC sewing circle.
Rev. Steve "Flash" Gordon
Right now, Rev. Gordon is the STRONGEST GRASSROOTS CANDIDATE in this election. Rev. Gordon is smart to come out swinging against Crispin Rea and promoting his solution to Country Club Plaza problems. There's an effort to discount him but we see his personable style, faith community connections and civic elite alternative as a key to success for this contender.
Bruce Watkins Jr.
Name recognition alone will earn this candidate more votes than most would imagine. The Wakins name is a gold standard that even Northlanders appreciate. Old school KCMO voters could choose this candidate simply because it's a safe old school KCMO choice and the rhetoric against the funeral director might come off as petty. On the other hand, the funeral biz is always good, people aren't gonna stop dying anytime soon so Mr. Watkins might not even want to take on the City Council problems.
Karmello Coleman
Karmello Coleman is a political denizen with GREAT AND MEMORABLE NAME. She'll stand out on the ballot more than any other candidate in this race. I've met her and if she works the cordial Oprah-Winfrey-esque card, she could compete with the best in local politics . . . Sorry, that's cruel and probably racist-seeming but shaking hands and confirming pleasant stereotypes is part of Kansas City politics. White women who want to imagine themselves having a Black friend propelled Oprah to the status of a global media icon . . . Therefore, taking down a po'dunk local election by smiling, giving a few hugs and speaking in the self-help-talk-style is no grand feat. Example: Mayor Sly James.

ReplyDeleteI'd recommend reading the interactions between jonathan chait and ta nehisi coates over whether its fair to chalk up the struggles of the black community to a "bad culture". the reality of that argument is that its just racist. you can complain all you want about how there are candidates who will appease the racist crowd because they are "not whats wrong with the black community" but behind the veil you're just gonna find more hatred. far right assholes like chuck just want to hate blacks. given american history idk why anyones surprised. they dont need an excuse, but condoning their critiques of the black community doesn't actually help. you may as well join the resistance.
The most important criteria should be:

2. Do they have the guts to provide some leadership when the same tired old names come calling and try to "get them to understand how things really work here"?
Start with working to make the 3rd District a much safer place and you just might find that other good things will follow.

They're people, not perfect, but doing something that most of us - me included - don't have the balls to do - try to make changes!!
