Kansas City geopolitics is always at play and a recent decision to throw money at the Country Club Plaza violent teen flash mob problem has stirred outrage across the river.

KANSAS CITY NORTHLAND POLITICAL INSIDERS RAGE OVER THEIR EXCLUSION FROM INCREASED COMMUNITY CENTER AND YOUTH PROGRAM FUNDING!!!
A rather BRILLIANT AND KICK-ASS TKC TIPSTER offered this quote and information on the subject:
"There is NO cash for those programs going to Northland community centers. I guess Northland parents are perceived to be model parents who have their kids under control, therefore not needing any youth program funding OR is the Mayor so confident that he has the Northland vote that he doesn't need to throw them any bones?"
Another insider spoke of the problem in economic terms:
"This is nothing less than the redistribution of wealth from viable neighborhoods north of the river in order to support babysitting for violent teens in the urban core. It's a shame that Mayor and Council don't seem to think that our children are worthy of funding for youth programs in Northland neighborhoods."

Here are just a few reasons why this is important:
- All the population grown in Kansas City is north of the river.
- This (hard to predict) voting bloc gains influence every election despite unified leadership.
- Nobody can win a citywide election without Northland support.
And so . . . This slap in the face to the Northland from Mayor Sly and the City Council isn't going unnoticed. While politicos and civic leaders worry about saving the urban core, Kansas City's future continues to move up North and remains increasingly frustrated that this town's political leadership that hasn't followed the lead of a shifting population.

And if they are, then yes, Club KC is being expanded this year for the first time to the Kansas City North Community Center, which is indeed in the Northland, and would presumably share in the doubling of the city appropriation for Club KC.
But we don't know that because neither Tony nor his "tipster" provides us with hard numbers -- what was the budget for the KC North center last year? What is its budget this year?
Now it could be possible that they have cut some non-performing, under-utilized programming to help pay for Club KC, but then, I am left wondering if these cuts affect ONLY the KC North Center and not the other four.
In other words, all we got here is fact-free ranting about something Tony isn't curious enough to find out about, but that won't stop him from sharing how precious little he knows.

Dedicating two tactical squads, a proactive unit, and nearly 15 district officers to the Plaza area, on top of the 20 off duty officers hired by Highwoods (Plaza) is pretty ridiculous if you ask me. These officers which were previously assigned to "Hot Spots" and/or answering 911 calls in the Central Patrol Division just sit around on the Plaza and play cat and mouse with the kids. Instead, violent crime in the inner core continue to rise and response times by the PD are likely to rise due to the reallocation of resources.

You are right, we northlanders have worked to make some swimming pools, entertainment areas, that are not City supported. ReplyDeleteAnd, no, there wasn't simply discussion. The City Council formally authorized the staff to conduct a feasibility study for a new community center in the Clay County portion of Kansas City, north.
Part of the charge of that study would be to determine all existing recreational options throughout the area and how a new community center would meet unfulfilled needs.
Or were you also unaware that all those suburban bedroom communities also have community centers and recreation departments as well?
I don't live in the northland. I don't want the city to spend more money on babysitting.

And one of those is an ice rink and not a full-fledged community center. The other is old and ill-equipped, long past its prime. When Parks had to make cuts several years ago, it was a NORTHLAND swimming pool that closed. The next year, a south pool was slated to close and black parks commissioners threw a fit and the pool stayed open.

The Northland does get funds for new infrastructure, but it has to...it is the fastest growing part of the City, and pays a disproportionate share of taxes for what it receives from the City.
That giant sucking sound you hear is the east side, the Green Impact Zone, 18th and Vine, Power & Light, and other ill-planned projects south of the river that suck City dollars and give nothing back in return.

Why does it matter where the Parks pool that closed was located? The fact is that there were TWO Parks pools north of the river, and the Parks department closed the Line Creek pool about five years ago and now there is ONE pool. It doesn't make any difference how many country clubs or apartment complexes or subdivisions have pools. Those same things could be said for south of the river? Not all Northland kids belong to a country club or live in a subdivision with a pool. Do all south of the river kids belong to the Carriage Club or live in a nice apartment complex on the Plaza with a pool? Are you finished stereotyping the Northland kids, or is that ok to do, and it's just stereotyping the east side kids that's wrong?
People like 4:35 are disgusting and sickening. They are apologists for the bad behavior of inner city kids and will spend everyone's tax dollars towards half-assed, worthless attempts to fix this bad behavior, but will shortchange the kids and families that hold it together and exemplify good behavior. No cuts were made to key urban programs? My dear fellow, deep cuts were made at the KC Zoo at the same time that Funkhouser was cutting the P&R budget. So deep that they had to cut staff, shorten hours and close concession stands.
