SUPPORT KANSAS CITY PUSHBACK AGAINST CITY HALL KCI SINGLE TERMINAL PLAN!!!

Kansas City voters are finally rallying to thwart a new plan for KCI that nobody but bureaucrats, politicos and developers support.

LAST NIGHT KICK-ASS TKC TIPSTERS BROKE NEWS OF THE CITIZEN INITIATIVE PETITION EFFORT TO PUT A HALT TO THE KCI SINGLE TERMINAL PLAN!!!

And now . . . Check a bit more reaction . . .

SaveKCI: Friends Don’t Let Friends Build Unnecessary Airport Terminals

MO Rage: Excellent, breaking news on the airport

Dead Tree Media: Last-minute filing challenges plan for single terminal at KCI

Now . . .

The risk here is that Mayor and Council will nix this effort in the same manner they used to shut down Clay Chastain . . . But behind the scenes we're pretty sure that there are enough lawyers buzzing over this airport dogfight that the typical underhanded City Hall tactics won't fly.

And so . . . Because the local politicos and bureaucrats were so arrogant with this plan they're now getting pushback that could garner far more voters support than anything out of City Hall as of late. And the "adult discussion" championed by Mayor Sly is taking the form of a possible mandate that's working against his big plans.

DEVELOPING . . .

Comments

  1. KCI could, perhaps, stand for a few changes, updates, or operational modifications.

But the truth is, full blown replacement of KCI is nothing more than a welfare program for local architecture and engineering firms, large general contractors and their crony subs, organized labor and MBE's, and the whole extended network of development attorneys, consultants, et. al. who feed off these projects.

Are you "adult" enough to call it what it is, Mr. Mayor?

  2. Let's not leave Mark VanLoh out of the criticism here. This is nothing but resumé material for him.

  5. 6:53 said everything anyone needs to know.

I doubt Sly has the balls to do the right thing though. He's a total and complete sellout.

  8. at least one radio "newsman" - EJ Becker (KMBZ) - is publicly stating KCI is outdated and nothing like a modern airport that most travelers expect.

EJ... you're very close to crossing the line between stating an opinion and an endorsement of this project.

  10. EJ is right, 10:31. Most travelers expect massive inconvenience coupled with miles between their planes, baggage checks, baggage pickups, etc, supposedly made more accessible by moving sidewalks (when they don't break down). KCI is clearly not inconvenient enough for the traveling public.

  11. EJ Becker lives in Lee's Summit so he and his city is not on the line for the tab.

  13. So what happens to private, unsubsized, tax-paying development when Aviation starts leasing out space in the new terminal as well as the 600,000+ square feet in Terminals B and C?

    ReplyDelete
  14. Sounds like some of that PR money Aviation spent is making its way on to the airwaves. Or VanLoh found a radio show host that likes to travel.

  15. I travel a lot, we have the single best airport in the nation for overall convenience. Yes, it lacks services, but add those, don't kill a good idea in favor of a single terminal.

    ReplyDelete
  16. 12:52 There is very little space to lease in the new terminal outside of the airlines and a few restaurants. There won't be a hub so restaurants will struggle as they do now. Terminal B would be torn down and no one wants to lease office space at the airport already judging from the vacancy signs.

  17. We need a new airport terminal for security, environmental, and economic reasons (not necessarily in that order of importance).

Fewer passengers are flying out of KCI, new Southwest flights are going to St. Louis rather than KCI because they don't have any more gates at Terminal B, the airport is in violation of EPA codes on several fronts, and security is way more expensive than at other airports.

Yes, I love our 45+ year old little airport, too. But I understand the case that airport officials have tried - and failed big time - to make.

  18. 1) The addition of gates is a demand driven proposition. Assuming your information. Is correct, I seriously doubt lack of space is the ONLY reason Southwest is adding flights in STL and not KC. And Aviation could always relocate Delta to Terminal A or C to solve a space crunch.

    2) The City has a long standing history of ignoring environmental issues until they become major. For instance,m the problems with the ethylene glycol recovery system were apparent when the $250 million Terminal Improvement Project was undertaken. Why didn't the City fix that then? And what other environmental issues are there? Do we have to have a new airport to fix the environmental issues?

3)Security is more expensive because there are more security screeners. That means more jobs for security personnel, and increased convenience for passengers. Changing this is not a compelling reason to change the airport.

  19. Hey 1:43- you may want to let Dave Long know that no one wants to lease space at the airport. Didn't Aviation recently piss off the private landowners out there by bankrolling the multimillion purchase of a large office building there? And aren't they touting a major development project on Aviation property?

  20. Are the save the plaza people involved in this?

  21. If fewer people are flying out of MCI, why do we need a new terminal, 2:53? That sounds like the farmers who loaded up their truck and didn't sell anything thinking they could solve their problem by getting a bigger truck.

  22. If fewer people are flying out of kci, I would think the right thing to do is to downsize the airport. I say go big or go home.

I have used many single terminals...New York, Atlanta, both Chicago, etc. They are a pain to use. You a in a long line for security, you walk miles to your gate, if you flight is late or canceled you must sit in the secure area or get outside with a long walk and start security again. KCI is the most convenient for passengers. I SAY VOTE AGAINST A NEW AIRPORT.
