Fox4 recently featured an interesting story on Kansas City's increasing homicide rate which references a lot of what we discussed yesterday thanks to TKC Readers.

However, the discussion of the local murder rate took a rather interesting turn.
WHILE DISCUSSING KANSAS CITY HOMICIDES MAYOR SLY COMPARED THE CURRENT RATE OF INCARCERATION AMONG AFRICAN-AMERICAN MALES TO AMERICAN CIVIL WAR ERA SLAVERY!!!

Mayor Sly Said: “There is an educational factor, a lack of hope that comes with under-education. There’s a joblessness factor, lack of jobs that come with that. There’s the factor of having more African-American males in prison today then there ever were during the course of slavery and what that does to the home.”
Comparing the so-called "prison industrial complex" to slavery is a common meme. TKC first discovered the shocking juxtaposition a couple of years ago thanks to a post from Byron Crawford.
Meanwhile, notice our friend Dr. Ernest Evans citing allegations of racism against the KCPD for the uptick in homicide numbers and this year's drop in homicide clearances.
And while the debate about the root causes of Kansas City's rising homicide count is fun for everybody who wants to be offended and express a bit of (self)rightous indigtation . . .
IT IS A FACT THAT KANSAS CITY FALLS BEHIND OTHER METROPOLITAN AREAS WHICH HAVE CURBED MURDER RATES DURING RECENT YEARS!!!
And since we're discussing theories about Kansas City homicide numbers . . . Allow TKC to put forth the only correct assertion in this argument:
Kansas City's horrific and rising murder count represents a leadership failure of our political, business and social elite to offer a viable, consistent and long term plan/effort to curb local killing.
Put simply, Kansas City's leadership have grown too selfish to care about anyone's interests but their own and the chaos unfolding on local streets is yet another symptom of this problem.
You forgot to mention that he was wearing a bow tie while making this comment.

ReplyDeleteThis Mayor is lame. Let's keep beating the same horse and hopefully that will move us into the current decade. This Mayor mentioned nothing about self-respect. With or without a father, self-respect can be had. Yes, there are elements of slavery that persist in the culture of African Americans. Black women teaching their men to hate and mistreat women; to be suspicious of their intents. It is one thing to caution your son its another to downrate other women. Thus, the current trend for Black men to marry white women and be present in their lives (just like our fine Mayor) but when its a Black women, lets disappear on her and the kids. This Mayor is a joke! Ask him why he married a white woman and why his law firm employs nothing but white people. He right, it is a slave mentality.

I don't feel one iota of sympathy for people in prison. The only person that is guilty of putting them there is themselves. If Sly wants to point fingers he needs to pull it out of his ass and point it at himself. He is supposed to be a leader and role model, not an overspender and smiler. I'm tired of the same old blame whitey crap. That might of worked long ago but its past time that the black community stood up and acted as if they are a responsibe enity instead of a bunch of whiners and grifters.

ReplyDeleteI realize they are Ernie's comments but you have stated that they are factual. Therefore, for those of us a bit less clever than average, can you please explain exactly how the political, business and social elite are supposed to make a difference among the black lower class in such a way as to cause them to not kill one another (or at least reduce their homicide rates to a statistically acceptable level)?
We could always try scrapping the drug laws. Take away the profit motive and a lot of the drug related killing stops. Take away the profit motive and a lot of the incentive to join in gang activities stops. Take away the drug laws and the cops are freed up to deal with property crimes and violent crime.
ReplyDeleteMiss Sweetie Evans has it exactly right. There should be more of them in prison. . And prison should be much tougher with chain gangs. Sly is just bitter that his immediate family is in prison, with a son well on his way to becoming an inmate. I cannot wait to vote this piece of shit out of the Mayor's office.

I agree tougher jail time for all colors would have a huge impact on crime. Hard time either breaks you or kills you it's all up to the person. Want to kill someone expect to die for doing so. Enter that style of justice into our lives and I have no doubt you would see the crime rate go down.
Slavery is the reason for the homocide increase. In slavery days slaves couldn't own guns! See a pattern.

That said, when the people do want to help themselves and they contribute in a positive manner to their community and to government then they are OWED what measure of access as can be generated through measures and means to enjoy those necessities and wants in order to LIVE, SURVIVE and hopefully to THRIVE!
Sly James has let this city down. The politics of Kansas City has gotten nastier and nastier as the years have passed and its getting WORSE.
I would not call the "powers that be" here in Kansas City "elite" in the slightest. Most of the one's who pull the purse strings in Kansas City proper don't even live in the area! As to the cosmopolitan nature of these people, well lets just say that they don't have "no" culture!
Murders are NEVER acceptable! Period! Not even one.
When your policies force a group of people into an area where you then begin to cut services and then trap them there with no positive means of escape other than to scrape and crawl and hide until they can get out....well, you have a desperate group of people (I mean, those who want to do better).
Kansas City is a sick place. The people are sick -- just ignorant -- and they don't care. They really don't know any better. The look in their eyes is one of being just lost in ignorance. Their advice to anyone who doesn't drop in line and blindly follow along behind them is, "Well, we like it. Why don't you just move if you don't like it too?"

Blame a culture of entitlement, where personal responsibility is of no value, where kids equal a bigger welfare check, where school equals free baby sitting. Parents are not tending to their children or their families. Families aren't tending to their neighborhoods. Education is not valued, nor is hard work, advancement, betterment, or success.
ReplyDeleteThis is not a problem exclusive to black communities but it does seem much more prevalent in those areas. I don't know what the answer is but expanding government giveaways and propping up failure is not the answer. Reward good behaviors, punish bad. It's going to take a generation to fix this. No politician is going to fix this in a term or two.
More prison, more aggressive prosecution. Fuck these people if they can't abide by laws.
ReplyDeleteSly must accept the responsibility for this. Other cities have reduced their murder rates. Sly caters only to developers, consultants, & engineering firms. The streetcar ordeal is a perfect example. His high taxes & the earning tax continue to drive businesses from the City. We need leadership in the City that focuses on the needs of the citizens.
