KANSAS CITY MONEY PIT MAKES ROOM FOR EXPENSIVE PENGUIN PALACE!!!

As of late local media has been touting one celebration for Kansas City after the next . . . There's not much concern about who will pay for it all but that doesn't really matter to anybody but our upcoming Chinese landlords.

Anyhoo . . .

The Kansas City Penguin Palace is coming along nicely and has even garnered a bit of token donations from local elite.

But don't get it twisted . . . Kansas City residents are picking up the tab on one of Mayor Sly's first FOREVER TAXES that he passed with a smile and help from prominent Republicans like TOP RANKING GOP consultant Jeff Roe.

Tragically, JoCo isn't kicking in any cash for the project while they still live under their entitlement fantasy that mistakenly believes admission and concession even make a dent in funding Kansas City's Money Pit Zoo.

Take a look at what The Kansas City Zoo Penguin Plaza will look like and maybe one day locals will be able to take their grandchildren to the place . . . Which is appropriate because local rugrats will eventually be required to pay for it.

  1. Man I wish we could all live in Tony's Dream City, with no zoo, sports teams, arenas, downtown, Plaza, or any other amenities. It could be just like North Korea! How great would that be?

  2. well, 6:06, you get the idea that tony might think it'd be great. even better, he'd already be in prison - or shot by firing squad - for this blog.

  3. Maybe you'll get a special invitation to the penguin exhibit, T. I hear they'll be having fish tracos!

  7. Zoo is like the schools; always gong to get better. Let's shut it down and let Johnson County provide a zoo for the metro area.

  8. there's already one in JOCO. called Oak Park Mall.

  9. if you knew the real finances of this city you would weep over this.

  10. Tony might call $4.1 million in privately raised funds -- more than 25 percent of the total project costs -- to be "token." I respectfully disagree.

You know, it's quite easy to run a blog that's against everything. It certainly doesn't tax the brain cells nearly as much as analyzing the cost/benefits of such amenities that other cities enjoy and are more than willing to pay for.

But in case you are wondering, the new penquin exhibit is part of Westhoff's overall vision that he got from his years at Henry Doorly in Omaha that a zoo must have both indoor and outdoor exhibits in order to be a year-round attraction in Midwest weather.

It is also part of the Doorly vision that a zoo needs to be somewhat compact, in that a new exhibit should be awaiting at every turn.

This is a radical departure from the 1990s, when the Africa and Australia venues were created that required long, empty walks between exhibits with no shelter from the summer heat or winter cold.

  11. Zoos are immoral and unethical anyway...

  12. The Penguin exhibit will be paid for in 12-15 months, a commission oversees all tax district money spent and the Zoo will finally be able to compete on a national scale. Mind you the VOTERS passed this tax, if the zoo doesn't spend wisely the VOTERS can remove the 1/8th cent consumption tax. Jackson and Clay residents get in free 4 days a year, all other days they get reduced admission $5 or less

  13. Imagine that. An agency spending voter-approved tax funds for their intended and specifically promised purpose. While raising millions in private funds to defray the costs.

    What a scandal.

Longtime readers of Tony, help me out here. Is this post dumber than the one last winter when Tony bitched that the city didn't clear off a quarter-inch of snow fast enough to suit him?

    I can't decide.
