Derek Donovan blog: Star policy on Washington NFL team's name
There's reactionary backlash to this move but it's actually the right decision given that there's no excuse that a multimillion dollar corporation should use a racial epithet as their calling card. Seriously, in this day and age there's no reason that name should be part of the NFL and ANY rhetorical tactic used to encourage the changing of that practice is acceptable.

No little irony here.
ReplyDeleteThe Kansas City Star, like the Chicago Tribune, the LA Times, the New York Times and most major newspapers in the U.S. have enacted polocies that prohibit whenever possible the race of criminals when reporting crimes if the criminals are African American.
http://www.examiner.com/article/should-race-play-a-role-how-the-media-reports-crime
Yet the Kansas City Star a bastion of truth and probity will no longer print the word "Redskins".
Wow.
Bust out the Pulitzer.
Here is a quote from the article.
"I almost always come down on the side of publishing a word when it's the crux of a debate (as I did here in the first paragraph). It isn't healthy for discourse to pretend any words or thoughts don't exist."
What a fuckin hoot.
If there is an offense, which may or may not offend the self appointed PC Police, then to error on the side of safety is the wise choice.
We can surmise in addition, that not printing the description of murderers, rapists and armed criminals when they are African American and then by default endangering the Star's readers and citizens of this city, is jsut the price we have to pay, in order to remain consistant with the elevation of all things relating to ANY minority's agenda.
Total fuckin hypocritical bullshit.
I feel your pain Chuck but you are comparing apples and oranges.
ReplyDeleteYour railing against two different things.
You don't approves of calling people redskins. You're too smart for that.
It's the hypocrisy you don't like and that makes sense. But using racial slurs doesn't eliminate hypocrisy, it encourages it. So this small bit of protest is warranted and sheds light on other hypocritical actions that you points out.
what about the kansas city chiefs
ReplyDeleteThe "Chiefs" are not much better.
ReplyDeleteBut we Irish love to be called "Fighting". we do. No irony, disrespect or smugness whatsoever.

ReplyDeleteYou are exactly rightt.
I don't condone racial slurs, but the sanctimonious KC Star coming out with an "intrepid" stand against a racial slur, while continuing to endanger the readers of that same fish wrap by withholding descriptions of criminals if they are African American is pathetic.
Typical, expected, but pathetic.
I mean come on...
ReplyDelete"It isn't healthy for discourse to pretend any words or thoughts don't exist."
How about the part, where we all pretend actual people don't exist?
What a fuckin hoot.
Yeah, I guess the "Kansas City Chiefs" does sound better than the "Kansas City Niggers".
ReplyDeleteI am trying so hard not to laugh.
ReplyDeleteWill they no longer show a picture of the Cleveland Indians mascot?
ReplyDeleteThe Chiefs is a positive reference, comparing our players to the leaders of Native American culture. I don't think many native people complain about that. Redskins is the equivalent of n***er. Not much comparison there. And yes, the Cleveland Indians logo is racist. As far as the name Indians goes, that's just plain ignorant. As if Native Americans rowed over on boats from India.
ReplyDeleteNative Americans should recognize the teams that choose native american names are doing it out of respect to their culture. It's not like teams are rushing out to name themselves after other minorities or the French.
ReplyDeleteSorry, but while that may be true in some cases, "Washington Redskins" wasn't chosen out of "respect to their culture" and more than "Washington Niggers" would show respect for African-American culture.
ReplyDeleteIt is an epithet. Always has been, always will be.
That can't be argued so those who would defend naming a sports team with a racial epithet need to shift the debate to one that is not being argued -- that ALL sports teams named after Native Americans are equally as offensive as "Redskins."
Well, that depends. Naming a sports teams "Indians" or "Chiefs" could be done out of respect -- until that team appropriates sacred cultures and traditions (such as "war dances") and profanes them.
Oh lets not try to offend anyone in this country. Heaven forbid.
ReplyDeleteThen as a resident of Kansas and lifetime resident as well I demand that the city of Kansas City Missouri change it's name to something other than anything that contains the word Kansas.
ReplyDeleteThe ill ran city goverment, raping of the tax payers, poor EMS service, killers running loose with guns is not the kind of things that the word Kansas which is a state wants to be identified with. The Missouri side of Kansas City is as well an epithet of embarrassment to the name of Kansas and should be stopped from using said name at once.
While the state of Kansas has it's own issues there is no reason it should have to suffer added embarrasment from the stupidity/actions/general retarded state of the place called and known as Kansas City Missouri.
Stupid, and we wonder why Kansas City continues to remain a shithole cowtown.
ReplyDeleteLet's ask the Native Americans. If they are offended, then change it; if not then leave it.
ReplyDeleteThere's a mountain near here that used to be called Negro Mountain. It was so named to honor an African American. It was not meant as a slur. The African American community asked that it be renamed & it was. That may seem ironic, but only history buffs knew its history. Everyone else only knew how it made them feel.
Chiefs, Indians, Braves, Redskins, etc. This was not about honoring Native Americans. It was about ignorance.
I for one, think it would be great if they re named the team, The Washington White Boys.
ReplyDeleteI also think there is an over representation of African Americans in pro sports and the same affirmative action practices which now force business' to hire underqualified people for jobs they can't do, should be applied to the Washington White Boys.
I wanna see some white boys running 7.5 "40's" on that team or by god there will be a riot.
No Justice, No Peace!
Ironic, isn't it. That the one arena where blacks have an equal chance, they are excelling. I played basketball, I can't jump. I can't run a 7.5 40 either.
ReplyDeleteAs soon as I read the words NATIVE AMERICAN, my eyes glaze over.
ReplyDeleteThe ONLY native American is the bison.
How about the fightin' Quakers at Penn? LOL
Who reads the liberal fucking KC Star anyway? Anybody?
