Here's a BIT OF TESTIMONY SEEN FIRST ONLY ON TKC regarding an important move and ad campaign from local labor . . . And starting on Labor Day . . .RIGHT NOW THIS IS PART OF THE CAMPAIGN THAT'S GOING FAR AND WIDE ACROSS LOCAL INTERNETS
Check it:
"Beginning Labor Day, these billboards will be going up around the Kansas City area, including some in surrounding communities like Nevada, Missouri, where Crossland was hired to manage a high school construction project. From 2005 thru 2009, Crossland Construction of Columbus, Kansas, (ALLEGEDLY) recorded 350 workplace injuries and two deaths. To put that in perspective, there are 260 weeks in that five year period. So Crossland averaged 1.3 injuries per week from 2005 thru 2009. In all (again, according to this testimony) Crossland has had three employees die on the job from 2002 to the present. During that same period, OSHA cited Crossland 43 times and imposed initial penalties of over $220,000.
"Please support the Carpenters Union campaign against Crossland by visiting www.TheTruthAboutCrossland.com . We need your help in spreading the word about this company. We are asking people to share this link with their friends on facebook, and urge them to call Ivan Crossland, Jr. of Crossland Construction and tell him to do the right thing by requiring that area labor standards and workplace safety standards be met on all its projects.
Why is this important to Kansas City?
"Crossland has opened an office here in Kansas City within the last year or so, and has started on a number of construction projects including the 39Rainbow development across from KU Medical Center, and has begun demolition work on a building at 15th & Baltimore for Sporting Innovations a tech firm that is a spin-off of Sporting Club that owns Sporting KC. Both of those projects received tax incentives. In 2011, claims for unpaid wages were filed with the Kansas Department of Labor by 23 workers against a local Concrete Construction firm working as subcontractor and Crossland Construction as contractor for work performed on the 39Rainbow mixed-use development project, Rainbow Blvd. and Marty Ave., Kansas City, Kansas. Some of the wage claims were filed by undocumented aliens."

Thats interesting.
ReplyDeleteOne injury is too many not to mention 3 deaths. What your blog did not mention do they have 25 employees, 250 employees, 2500 employees...
ReplyDeleteI am shocked if it is such a bad working environment that OSHA has not fined them more or shut them down.
crossland is a big company so that many injuries in my mind isnt horrible. they need to show what the EMR (employee modification rate) of crossland construction is. that shows where they stand to the average construction company.
ReplyDeleteWow! and Mitt Romney didn't get blamed for it? You are slipping old man.
ReplyDelete1:15- EMR= Experience Modification Rate
ReplyDeleteYou should take a look at the City's injury numbers over the same period of time. They spend MILLIONS each year on worker's compensation claims. Most private companies, even those in high hazard workplaces (e.g. meat processing) try to keep their work comp. costs below $50 per employee. The City's work comp. costs are over $1500 PER EMPLOYEE. That's 30 TIMES HIGHER..
ReplyDeleteEven accounting for some of the higher injury professions (firefighting, police) this number is way out of line and a huge waste of taxpayer dollars. Not only that, but by law the City is exempt from OSHA regulations.
It's a dirty secret the City hides.

ReplyDeleteThat is REALLY interesting.
And even though this company has been in business for over the normal three months that's the criteria to get a contract with KCPS, I'm sure they'll be shaken down by the local usual suspects as the way to get a ticket into the local government gravy train.
ReplyDeleteIs there a place for Ken Bachuus? I hear he does a great job rennovating houses!
Rule #1 about construction is that men get injured and some die. Rule #2 is that you can't do anything about Rule #1. This is just more trade union bullshit. As cited above Crossland is not a bad company.
ReplyDeleteIf think this tactic is on page 14 of the Union Thug Handbook
ReplyDeleteWait until these folks get a visit from the KCMO Human Rights Commission gang and the grifters pushing for MBE/WBE compliance.
ReplyDeleteIf you think the unions can threaten and demand, you ain't seen nothing yet!
The same old names are always attracted to money in the water just like sharks to blood.
Payoffs are on the way.
Union thuggery huh? I wonder what the three dead workers would say to that?
ReplyDeleteGood on 'em union boys I say. Or maybe you'd prefer the old days when there were no child labor laws and sweatshop doors were locked.
the problem is they are not a "good" company to work for.
ReplyDelete1. All companies will work you for the leaast that they can work you for. That way their wallet gets fatter.
2. But this company is "fatter" by hiring workers and not paying them, that is "bad" for the worker. They cannot buy goods, like food. or pay bills or get to work.
3. this company hires "illegal" non americans, no work visa, and doesn't pay them the going wage fopr undocumented workers, and keeps the money from them also. Thats really getting mean. And then makes the undocumented person have to file a suit to get that money, talk about a double jepardy.
That company should have been bagged and tagged long ago. Hoisted on their own petard, and sent along with the undocumented to the border, and put there to fend for themselfs. Bad enough to screw the american worker and profit, but thats classical slavery, almost like the 40's in germany.
Crossland built a building for our firm. They were professional and did a quality project. Their employees and subcontractors were good people. As part of the selection process we required them to provide certain information; I recall their EMR was around .65 which I believe to be 35% better than industry average! We even verified this because it was significantly better than other KC general contractors we talked with. At the time they built our building they had almost a 1000 employees, not sure in todays economy if thats the case. Safety was apparent on our project and they had their own safety folks, safety guys from their broker, and insurance carrier on our job on a regular basis working with both their employees and the subcontractors. The Crossland's were even onsite every couple of weeks too. We would hire them again a heartbeat!
ReplyDeleteUnion shenanigans and tom foolery. A reported injury could be anything from an amputation to a big splinter in your thumb. a death could be someone dropping dead from a heart attack totally unrelated to the job they were doing. Lets just be honest here. Unions do not give a rats ass about non union workers. They Do however care greatly about getting as many big gubmint contracts as possible. If the unions get an independent company kicked off a job, are they going to give those non union guys a job to replace the one they lost? Fuck no. There was a time when unions mattered, when they actually helped all workers. Now its just greed , gluttony, and fuck anyone who isnt a member.
ReplyDelete@Mark Smith: Look at the website. Two of the worker deaths were from falls where workers did not have fall protection in place and the third was crushed by a concrete sewer pipe. As far as the injuries go, Crossland's OSHA 300 logs from 2005 to 2009 document the injuries referred to in the add. Many were very serious injuries that resulted in lost time. Don't just be a hater, look at the evidence. You might learn something!
ReplyDeleteI worked on a Medical Building project in 2009 that involved union and non union trades. The framing contractor was nonunion so the Capenters local sent their Thugs out on a regular basis to harass the framers and the GC.
ReplyDeleteWhat irritated me was that they were oblivious to the rockers and mudders who were most likely undocumented.
If you want to discuss worksite safety where half the crew no habla English, let's get started.
So then they set up a picket which after two days consisted of a bunch of fat dudes sitting in their trucks smoking with picket sign somehow attached to their vehicles.
When I inquired how the other trades how they were crossing the picket I was informed that it was an "educational" picket.
I've got zero respect for for these thugs.
JE Dunn must be scared of these Crossland guys, since they are the money behind this campaign . There is no union in Kansas city if Dunn was not here. I know 3 different company's that are union that wish they weren't .
ReplyDeleteI bet if you compare the safety of tha union and JE Dunn I bet Crossland is safer. Go get em Crossland
Crossland CEO Ivan Crossland is a big buddy of the Koch brothers in Wichita. Ivan worked hard (successfully)to defeat the moderate Republican senators who dared to question the agenda of the Americans For Prosperity and KS Gov. Brownback. If you think these people give a shit about the average guy or their company workers, you're sadly mistaken. It isn't in their DNA.
ReplyDelete@2:24 thanks, thinking one thing typing another
ReplyDeleteCrossland has a bus the jobs...... They pay a fee to ride and get to the site...... That called robbery?
ReplyDeletethe unions are no longer necessary in providing jobs to america, in fact they are a hindrance to companies becuase they cannot stay afloat without people's money.
ReplyDeleteListen here motherfuckers crossland is a good company to work for regardless of deaths or injuries there are going to be that in these industries it's a high risk job if everyone wants to bitch and moan about these accidents then they ought to just sit there Ass down at there desk jobs no matter what trade your working in there is going accidents
