TKC BREAKING NEWS AND THE SATURDAY NIGHT PLAYLIST!!! MAYOR SLY STILL PROMOTES HIS LAW FIRM DESPITE CAMPAIGN PROMISES TO THE CONTRARY!!! A GROWING NUMBER OF CRITICS QUESTION: IS THIS IS A KANSAS CITY CONFLICT?!?!

Apparently, the job of Mayor isn't keeping Sly James busy enough.

Either that or this economy is worse than I initially suspected.

To wit . . .

TAKE A LOOK FOR MAYOR SLY SOLICITING BUSINESS FOR HIS LAW FIRM IN THE LATEST EDITION OF THE KANSAS CITY CALL!!!

Strange, he's not smiling in this photo.

The website makes a nice pitch. Slyjamesfirm.com promises: "Aggressive, Committed Kansas City Personal Injury Lawyers"

Cool. But still . . .

KANSAS CITY INSIDERS CRITICIZE HIS DECISION TO KEEP PROMOTING HIS LAW PRACTICE!!!

Yes, we're sure that Mayor Sly ran this by "City Hall Ethics Experts" (snicker) but a great many questions remain . . . Here are more a few:

- Like it or not, there are more than a few people INCLUDING TKC who remember that MAYOR SLY PROMISED HE WOULDN'T WORK ON HIS LAW PRACTICE IF HE BECAME MAYOR. In fact, Mayor Sly made a big deal of shutting down his practice during the campaign and always used to complain about how much cash he was losing. Remember the topic of curbing his law practice was one of the many things upon which Sly and his opponent Mike Burke agreed.

- Mayor Sly sued the City and won some pretty great cases as an attorney . . . Would his firm take the same cases now that the Mayor is on the other side?

- Yes, we DID notice another important politico in this advert.

- Like it or not, Mayor Sly seems to be out of touch with the community East Of Troost . . . I'm all for diversity but this advert in Kansas City's African-American paper of record flanked by two white lawyers sends a strange message. Politically and in terms of public image: Mayor Sly has struggled to keep in touch with his roots from his younger years on Montgall Avenue . . . This advert DOES NOT HELP!!!

- Doesn't the Mayor have enough to do now? DOESN'T KANSAS CITY DESERVE A FULL TIME MAYOR?!?! Sly James wants to help run KC Public Schools, he's promoting the All-Star game and now he's working to promote his practice . . . Those are a lot of jobs to juggle for a guy who has a "top down" management style. He might not have time to do any of his work effectively . . . OR maybe THAT'S WHY he likes the pricey scotch.

Thanks to THE MOST BAD-ASS TKC TIPSTERS who told us about this advertisement . . . It certainly raises questions about Mayor Sly's dedication to his job representing Kansas City at City Hall.

And all of this has inspired tonight's playist.

As always, thank you for reading this week. Have a safe and fun weekend.

  9. Beth did not work while she was on the Council. She devoted full time effort to the city.

  10. Other people work to earn their livings at the practice and the firm is named he Sly James Firm. He didn't promise to dump his partners and close the firm.
As long as that group isn't doing business with the city or any of its agencies, there's no conflict of interest.
Just keep railing on the toy trai, T. That's the money hole that Sly is digging for all of us.

He is probably using his new celebrity status to bring in clients. I doubt he is working ful time on cases, although I am just guessing.

  13. "..strange message."

"Like it or not, Mayor Sly seems to be out of touch with the community East Of Troost . . . I'm all for diversity but this advert in Kansas City's African-American paper of record flanked by two white lawyers sends a strange message."

Actually, it IS a very strange message.

Traditionally, and still to this minute, African Americans have and do expect special treatment, not only by way of laws, "Protected Class" treatment in and out of the economy, special hiring practises, special exceptions in acadame, warranted promotions by way of skin color as opposed to achievment and most importantly, the unwritten and expected social exceptions to equality that would allow Tony to brazenly question the presence of (QUELLE HORREUR!!!!) white lawyers pictured in "The Call".

Were the folks in the Pitch, the Kansas City Star, kcconfidential, various and sundry blogs, or ANY well known publication in this town, to question the presence of an African American in an advirtisement, then the always ready, Race-Baitin-Cash-Grabbin-Civil-Rights-You-Owe-Me juggernaut would roll over said offender with a vengence and probably some monetary pay out, comlete with public apologies and employee terminations.

Yeah, its been strange alright, for 40 years too long.

  14. The knots in their ties communicate "gang signs" -- at least Kyle told them that is what they mean. I notice they have their bitch carrying their paperwork. What a progressive firm.

  15. Hell yeah he is still operating, he has represent all his family members who caught a case. On an unrelated note, I was out on the Plaza last night and I have to say great job KCMO Police Dept. They had a huge presence everywhere. The closer you got to the movie theater, the more cops. It is the right thing to do. I did see groups of young black people but they knew not to cause any trouble. That said, what the hell are 12 or 13 year old kids doing roaming the Plaza (or anywhere else) at 10 P.M. unsupervised? I have kids around that age, I know what they look like. My kids sure as hell wouldn't be anywhere other than bed at that time. I don't know if it's because it is prom season or what and they don't want a repeat of last year but keep it up KCMO. Have a noticeable presence all year every year there. Don't let the animals take over and ruin it like they do everything else.

  16. Tony, we should be happy that Sly is a part time mayor. Can you imagine how much he could fuck things up if he gave it his full attention?

  17. @anonymous 1:03 am

What you doing up so late bashing me for? You just getting home from stroking ole Sly or maybe hanging with Kyle beating on the white women?

  18. Sly James was a trolling lawyer who would take any case for a dime. Now he is a for-profit mayor. Why would anyone expect any different? Look at his freakin' kid for christ sakes! We are here to line his pockets, nothing more, nothing less.

  19. I wonder if he can represent me when I sue the city for wrongful termination?

  20. Gee, I really miss the Funkhouser-Cauthen era. Can't wait for the James-Schulte era to end.

  21. Sly is a sellout.

  22. Great insight Tony and some good comments. Some are just silly as hell, but it raises the question about him using the office of Mayor to solicit business. Not a good thing. I was at the Bruce watkins center candidate forum when he said that he was not going to practice law. A lot of good black lawyers why don't any of them work for his firm? THANKS TONY
