TKC BREAKING NEWS!!! THE CONTROVERSIAL SHOOTING DEATH OF TRAYVON MARTIN SPARKS PROTEST IN KANSAS CITY TODAY ON PROSPECT!!!
Here is the first image from a protest today on Prospect led by Kansas City 3rd District Committeeman Pat Clarke. A group of neighbors and activists gathered to voice their objections to not only the controversial case of a teenager killed in Florida and the way it was handled by authorities but also to call for an end to senseless violence in Kansas City.
As always, MO State Rep. Brandon Ellington was on the scene of a local social justice protest and taking time to talk to his constituents.
Mr. Clarke and members of the P.A.C. 20 briefly spoke with the media about their protest. Cheryl Trezvant-Tolliver was on the scene and noted her concern with senseless crime and likened the Martin homicide to the shooting death of her relative who was gunned down during an altercation over stolen batteries at The Brookside Price Chopper.
Here's a bit more of what I heard.
"It's all hate crime," Mr. Clarke said. "These people who are killing each other are involved in hatred and it has to stop. We are protesting this senseless killing in Florida but also so many murders right here in Kansas City."
A group of roughly more than two dozen gathered this afternoon in solidarity with Trayvon Martin protests around the nation and to voice concern over local killings.
As of late, Mr. Clarke has seemingly been even more involved in local organizing and politics. It's not out of line to speculate that the spike in the KC homicide number has inspired Mr. Clarke to take an even more active role in his community.
"We have to come together," Mr. Clarke said. "Not just right now for this protest but afterward and throughout our community if we want to be effective in preventing these killings."
This afternoon Kansas City protests delivers a clear message: More than a few residents on Prospect feel a sense of solidarity with those who object to the way that authorities handled the shooting death of Trayvon Martin. The topic of senseless violence and a search for justice resonates on the Eastside and has sparked more than a few people into action.

ReplyDeleteUnless and until there's some serious leadership in the black community, some cohesion and cooperation in the neighborhoods, some parental supervision, and a demand for personal responsibility and basic decnt public behavior, KCMO will stay right where it is with violence and homicides.
For every senseless death like Trayvon Martin's, there are hundreds of young people killed without any reason by people who look just like they do.
It's way past time to stop blaming everybody else and pull this up by its roots.

ReplyDeleteI will be the first to admit the T. Martin story is absurd. The guy should have been arrested at the scene of the crime. That said, the fact that there are protests around the country for by people in other cities for someone they don't know is also absurd given the current violence situation. Especially here in K.C. All over the country there are massive amounts of black-on-black and black-on white crime that apparently nobody gives a fuck about. Comparatively there is very little white-on-black crime, this high profile case notwithstanding. And yes I realize his parents had to go to the media to hold the cops accountable and deservedly so. Tonight on the East Side there will be a shooting and these very same people will not give a shit or even turn the guy in even though they know who did it. Hypocrites

IF he was on his way home, minding his own business when an unidentified man was following him, that's pretty innocent all right. Even if Trayvon tried to defend himself from this stranger, that is also allowed. If Zimmerman had stayed in his car and waited for police, all would have been fine.

ReplyDelete@ radioman...what was he defending himself of? From what I've read Zimmerman was simply following him talking on the phone to police. You need to be able to see the diiference between things that are weird and/or just not smart (like following the kid) from something that's actually illegal (punching or shooting someone). Simply having somebody follow you down the sidewalk is not a reason to "defend" yourself as you say. I guess it will all come down to when they determine if he just shot him or if he shot him when he started getting punched.

The first witness reported that Martin was on top of Zimmerman who was yelling for help. Cold blooded killers dont usually tell witnesses to call 911, they also dont tend to stick around for the cops. While Im not saying the shooting was justified, its impossible to say it wasnt until all of the facts are investigaited. If this had been the standard black on black killing we wouldnt hear a single fuckin peep out of the media or all of the outraged black and white hand wringers. The truth, whatever it may be is forever lost amidst the hype. If Zimmerman isnt charged, shits gonna burn come summer if not sooner.So the state or the feds will crucify zimmerman, guilty or not, to appease people who are making the most noise. Sadly even the hint of a rare white on black murder trumps the daily black on black murder rate. Name a high profile black on white crime. I'll wait. You never hear of them, common as house flies but little coverage occurs at least as far as the racial aspect goes. The people making the most noise over the martin case are as mute as helen keller when it comes to black on black or black on white murder.

ReplyDeletePolice and the Florida Attorney General have a WITNESS statement that saw Zimmerman getting beaten; grass and dirt stains were on the back of Zimmerman's shirt.
