Sadly, despite promises of hope and change . . . We're hearing that a great many municipal workers are having a blue Christmas.
In fact . . .
DESPITE MANY CHANGES IN LEADERSHIP THERE'S WORD THAT MORALE AMONG KANSAS CITY WORKERS IS EXCEEDINGLY LOW THIS HOLIDAY SEASON!!!
Recently, TKC TIPSTERS broke news of a racial lawsuit among the KCPD. That can't be good for worker relations. Additionally, there's word that a great deal of politics and a lack of support for rank & file officers have impacted the department as of late . . . We'll have more on this later.
Workers at City Hall have been long suffering and it seems that Sly James and The New City Council aren't doing much to help things. The hot mess over pensions has ignited tensions among everybody who works for KC Proper, a recent protest is evidence of this fact. However, there was a hope that the end of the Funkhouser era would better access, more communication and more professional management for workers inside the Hall . . . It hasn't.
And while things are always exciting among the KCFD . . . The incorporation of Ambulance Service into The KC Fire Department still isn't going well and response times continue to suffer along with the toll on Former MAST ambulance workers who aren't really accepted as part of the KCFD.
So . . . While hopes were so very high for Mayor Sly and the New Council, workers occupying institutions overseen by these politicos have yet to reap any benefit from this change in leadership. In fact, it's pretty much the same old story, now with even less money thanks to the Global Economic Slowdown.

ReplyDeleteIt is the pension issue. Municipal workers all over the country are fighting to keep their fat pensions. Cities can't afford it.
ReplyDeleteI work at a business downtown and had a drunk passed out in front of the business last week. I called for an ambulance because the guy couldnt even stand up and it took 20 min for the ambulance to get there. The paramedics said that they had to come from north of the river because the redeployment/realignment of ambulances at fire stations instead of staging areas like MAST used to do leaves major gaps in the coverage. While this case wasn't a life threatening call, others are suffering across the city due to the poor planning of the KCFD
ReplyDeleteMorale is low everywhere, indeed. The difference is that most places are working hard to stay a float with the mindset that things will be better again. That's not the case at city hall. Things are bad now and given the leadership that is in place, there are no prospects of improvement.

ReplyDeleteI wonder if Sly will do anything to fix this or if he's just propose another idea and hand it off to someone else, that seems to be his style of leadership. It has been disappointing but not too different from most politicians.
Yeah, I feel for them. You know its bad when Water Department workers can't even take naps in their trucks anymore.
ReplyDeleteYeah right, everyone said that racism would improve under our new black Mayor. Well, bullshit. Blacks are the worst racists on the planet and now we have a black police chief, Mayor and God knows what else...Are things better?? That's one strong reason for low morale and it will only get lower.
ReplyDeleteThe elected folks don't care any more about the city employees than they do about the residents. But the devlopers and Chmaber of Commerce folks are happy, so everything is just fine.

Raises for fire and police. Big $ for Citadel. Layoffs. Many many upcoming lawsuits for those employees who lose their jobs.

ReplyDeleteInteresting how people like you had no comment when the previous 'men' were in office and ineffective with poor administrative skills but now with some 'new' men in place, people like you have something to say. Well, I say 'WHATEVER'!!!
I worked for several years with the City. Many employees were very good workers. Some did not pull their own weight, but very few. I also worked in the private sector and it was the same. The difference is news coverage.
ReplyDeleteI gave up a lot to work for the city, residence in KC only, political affiliations, lower salary, etc. But it was worth it, I did a good job.
