In Kansas City Afrikan Centered Schools don't perform that much better than our other crappy schools . . . As evidenced by their consistent misspelling of the totally word made-up word "Afrikan."
Still . . . An end to funding for the overtly political education program on the East side now on the table.
Behind the scenes AND ACCORDING TO TKC TIPSTERS . . . This might very well be payback for the leaders of this education program attempting to circumvent the board in a proposed takeover.
Whatever it is . . . It's not about education or improving the performance of Kansas City Schools overall. Nevertheless . . . Even the mere mention of this topic evokes some of the most stunning, vitriolic and totally misinformed racism from a great many people . . . Sadly, they don't even rage over the stupidly overpriced drum program. Predictably, the ranting is from a great many talk-radio-style media watchers who are mostly long gone from Kansas City Public Schools.
What's important is that the members of the current School Board haven't been consistent on the ACE program . . . Not so long ago they quickly and covertly approved funding in return for support for their political agenda . . . Now that the support is suspect, the question of funding is back on the table . . . And that's the most important lesson for parents, students and media watchers. Neither education nor cultural appreciation is really part of this discussion . . . It's really about nothing more than political patronage.

Back in 1977, i had just graduated from college and was a district substitute for the KC School District. A Lady got pregnant in a school called Blenheim and I had the kids, 32 of them in the 4th grade, from January until almost the end of the year.
At first, I tried to follow the previous teacher's instructions as related to lesson plans, subject and approach, with an eye over my shoulder for my superiors.
After a day and a half, I realised that no one was watchin me, and if the kids were quiet, all was well on the western front.
But that was nothing. I also found out, no one could read, add, subtract or multiply. They were able to struggle mightly with "See Jane Run" shit, but, at best, reading levels were kindergarten level and in some cases, non existant.
I took all the stupid fuckin lesson plan shit off of the desk, used both of my legs while I sat on the floor (I am little) and shoved it into the fuckin closet.
At that point, we all went to the board, row by row and learned to add and subtract by rote and effort and positive reinforcement. Then we all went row by row and gradually beat the reading monster to death.
We could (with one exception, a sweet little kid in the 6th row half way back.) all read way, way past a 4th grade level.
And we fuckin liked it!!
We never miss recess, becaause we played kick ball, and then we had to do laps too around the playground.
They were tired and ready to listen.
They were good kids, and every fuckin one of them came out more prepared for life and the shit sammy that life is.
Now I know your thinkin, I think I am cool. That ain't it.

If the kid is too hyper, DON'T GIVE THEM FUCKIN RITALIN, work thru it!!!
Bullshit Afrikan education, and the bullshit KCMO School District is not the problem.
Its the people who are in charge of the kids in the trenches.
Go to fuckin work, do your fuckin job and the kids will be alle to fucntion in society, get jobs and live a somewhat mormal life.
Ya don't need a fuckin study, you need martinets and dedication.

Chuck is right about ACE. This has always been just the ultimate worthless contract from the thousands at KCPS and the kids don't learn any more of the basics that would make them employable than anywhere else.

Of course, that's all great news for the black community and the children, so everyone should do all they can to make this happen.

ReplyDeleteI'm not a fan of "Afrikan" centered education. (I'd prefer it be American or world based.) But fair is fair. The story is not about the education--it's about not assuring fair value from vendors, which is a problem throughout a system which is run as a friends and family proposition.

Why is it that the inability to read and write, add and subtract, can't be learned in one school year?
Also, as far as all the baloney about integrating non-English speakers into the system. I say suspend everything else, and devote all efforts to getting fluent in English. That should not take more than one school year. THEN they can proceed on with the other subjects.
These black kids are no more Africans than I am.

ReplyDeleteThe biggest failure of ACE is that it is premised on the notion that these kids are not personally responsible or accountable for their actions (including their education), but are instead victims of the "system."

And if you don't own the failures, you don't own the successes, either.
This is the lowest form of low expectations.
My plan to turn around KCMSD:
ReplyDelete1. Demand that students study, turn in homework and make the grade. If they don't, they don't advance to the next grade.
2. Demand respect and discipline at school. If they don't give it, expel them.
3. Fast-track non-readers and non-English speakers so that they become fluent in English and have the ability to read for anything else happens.
4. Demand that all students dress properly. No pants falling off.

1:15 i Know about the school. I know how much it costs per student. I know how the average student tests against the national average. Per student it is a complete failure. It costs more per student than average yet delivers below average results in any range of nationwide tests. It is nothing more than some in the community grafting off as much money as they can from the school district and calling it ACE.
