TKC EXCLUSIVE!!! MUNSOK SO AND TONIGHT'S DRUNKEN FISH GRAND OPENING HELP SAVE KANSAS CITY'S P&L DISTRICT!!!

Restaurateur Munsok So is looking quite dapper in this photo he was nice enough to let TKC take . . . But let's quickly take a look at the circumstances that predate his arrival on the local scene . . .
For more than a few years we have come to understand that Kansas City just can't go on spending more than $12 million every year for the P&L District in addition to the subsidy and bond payments this town already provides. At some point the place is going to have to pull its own weight.
Seriously, every Council Person, all of the Mayoral Candidates and just about everyone in this town with the least bit of financial acumen is hoping, wishing and praying for an eventual P&L District win.
To wit . . .
RESTAURATEUR MONSOK SO AND THE DRUNKEN FISH GRAND OPENING TONIGHT REPRESENT THE LATEST, BEST HOPE TO PUT THE P&L DISTRICT ON THE PATH TOWARD PROFITABILITY!!!
Given the District's troubled history in Kansas City it's somewhat ironic and AWESOME that a minority-owned business leads the way toward relieving so much of Kansas City's taxpayer burden.
Monsok So is a lifelong resident of St. Louis, Missouri and his restaurant empire isn't a corporate chain but the result of years of hard work that started right out of college. There are three other Drunken Fish restaurants in STL along with Ice Kitchen that's described as "Continental Fusion."
Initially, the KC location resulted as part of a negotiation for another Drunken Fish location in STL, however during those talks Cordish pitched the P&L Location as alternative. Monsok believes that his Sushi Restaurant and Lounge is the perfect fit for Kansas City and there's a possibility that he might even open another location.

"Right now there's not anybody here doing what we do," Monsok said. "Kansas City has so many wonderful restaurants but we feel like we've created a unique lounge and dining experience in a fantastic space."

He's right, the view is amazing and with the warmer weather this is certainly going to be a coveted destination. The upscale lounge atmosphere seems to have already attracted a lot more people than the old school Bice restaurant it replaced. There was a soft opening for this place on Feb. 23rd but tonight's the big night.

Let's talk about tonight's Grand Opening Party. I snagged VIP tickets so I don't mind bragging about how KICK-ASS I think this place is . . .
Tonight's bash includes:
Japanese Taiko Drummers
DJ Broz spinning
The rooftop lounge features DJ Scott Carpenter
Live music by Sean McNown
Nyotaimori - The Art of NAKED SUSHI!!!
And I hear there will be sake samples as well.
Again, yesterday I was able to snag A LOT of samples form the menu . . .
NOW LET'S LOOK AT SOME FOOD PORN AND SHOTS FROM INSIDE THE DRUNKEN FISH FROM TKC!!!

Remember that your favorite Kansas City blogger mostly eats microwave burritos and pizza but I was still impressed that this place seemed classy yet accessible. Even better, the Drunken Fish "EAT IT RAW" tagline made me feel better about wearing my baseball cap in such a nice place.

What we're seeing here: Seared tuna sashimi over a bed of shredded daikon and carrots topped with tataki sauce and sprouts. On the left hand side, really kick-ass oysters with a description I lost in my notes. Still good.

Yellow Tail Mexicano: Yellowtail sashimi seared and topped with a freshly made jalapeno pico de gallo and ponzu sauce.

I think this is the Spicy Butterfly Roll which includes crab, spicy sauce and asparagus, topped with butterflied shrimp, scallions, masago, and spicy sesame oil

The Drunken Fish Roll: Shrimp tempura, Japanese mayo and asparagus, topped with red tuna, Japanese mayo, eel sauce, masago, tempura crumbs and sprouts

The KICK-ASS main course . . . The Miso Marinated Black Cod is kinda like a religious experience -- Black cod filet marinated in a sweet miso sauce, baked and served with white rice and asparagus.

The dessert was definitely the kicker . . . I hear people show up just for this . . . Strawberry Cheesecake Makimono - Tempura-battered New York style cheesecake and strawberries rolled in pink soy paper, topped with chocolate sauce, mixed nuts, powdered sugar and whipped cream.

Here's a look at the guys who prepared the food and the sushi bar inside The Drunken Fish . . .

My happy hour shot glass and swag that I stupidly left behind.

As far as price, most things not sold at QuikTrip are out of the range of a basement dwelling blogger . . . BUT, The Drunken Fish is definitely worth a date night excursion and is certainly the best hope to breathe new life back into the P&L District.
Nice pics. Food porn is funny.
ReplyDeleteThis place should last until about The Fourth of July ... or maybe Flag Day.
ReplyDeleteouch. if things keep going the way the are at the Power and light district that is right. Too bad.
ReplyDeleteLooks cool.
ReplyDeleteI am too old to go that far, but it looks cool.
A little up-scale for me. But I don't go to the P$L anyway. Think I'll stick with the reliable, predictable GATES.
ReplyDeleteThis place won't last. Nothing will save the phony P&L District.
ReplyDeleteI prefer my dinner dead, not stunned.
ReplyDeleteWhile the decor and the presentation of the food is lovely, the P&L is never a destination.
If this joint saves the P&L and the citizens of Kansas City, I'll be pleasantly surprised.
Great job flacking for these folks, Tee. I hope you at least got a free meal out of it.
ReplyDeleteThis isn't the kind of place the Jersey Shore crowd that goes to the P&L District to get wasted and be seen is going to have much interest in.
The barf outside on the sidewalk at 1:00am should be interesting, though!
I didn't even know about this place, they need to advertise.
ReplyDeleteHmm think I am going to "short" this one.
ReplyDeleteThey just don't make em like they used to.
ReplyDeleteI've estimated that you can eat approximately one of these drunken Fish "meals" a week and not suffer from side effects.
ReplyDeleteMunsok is right in that Kansas city desperately needs a sushi rest and lounge. Problem is sushi I'm Kc thus far sucks. Will his be betterr well see. E was smart enough to search for branding ideas and steal them from a popular international sushi place.
ReplyDeleteThe Drunken Fish has great sushi and we are thrilled to see it in the Power & Light District. There are 3 happy hours a day so if price is a concern-check it out during those times.
ReplyDeleteBe of good cheer Kansas City, the Power & Light District is a huge asset to our downtown that was going nowhere 3 years ago.
Interesting competition for Nara right down the street.
ReplyDeleteAs for food porn...for $5000 T, I'll give you some lessons.
Looks like a nice place to take the date tonight. Food looks good and the place looks classy.
ReplyDeleteAlways gotta impress the dates.
Thanks for the tip T.
You have got to be shitting me. Free tickets warrant you cumming allover this place. Wow. You sell out. Place will hang on for a year and then Cordish will sue them and shut them down.
ReplyDeleteWent there last week. Good sushi but over priced. Maybe the P&L surcharge, but I can get sushi just as good at several places in town for a lot less money.
ReplyDeleteNo way you could afford to eat here Tony. Did they comp the meal?
ReplyDeleteDoes the P&L surcharge include a bullet proof vest?
ReplyDeleteI have been to two of the drunken fish restaurants in St. Louis. i have to say that they do a great job. i absolutely love the food and the service. the only hold up at times is the wait at the door. depending on when you go, there are at times, up to 2 hour wait. once your sat, your golden! Great sushi and drinks in a great place.
ReplyDeleteI am hopeful that this restaurant will make a huge difference downtown, we needed it! can't wait to go back there over and over again!!!
I am so glad you liked it tony, this was my favorite sushi destination in stl. now WE HAVE ONE HERE!!! yay
ReplyDeleteI LOVE DF
ReplyDeleteSUSHI - "Your best bet for intestinal worms"
ReplyDeletei was just there last wednesday. for a weeknight, the place was packed. the food came out a bit slow, but well worth the wait...
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to come back and bring by friends.

TKC finished his meal with a traditional hipster asian cocktail called cream of sum yung guy.
ReplyDeleteThe only raw fish I want to eat has hair around it.
ReplyDeleteI prefer meat and potatoes. Not this crap.
ReplyDeleteIf they had a location at Bass Pro Shop, they could also sell the stuff as bait.
ReplyDeleteOkay that was the only funny comment in this thread but only because my dad used to use that line and give me a wink. Thanks 9:41 :)
ReplyDeleteOnly you, TKC, would refer to jeans, a flannel shirt and a Kangol as "dapper."
ReplyDeleteMunsok is the coolest owner i know and his resteraunts here in the STL always do very well. Not to mention the food is phenonmenal. If you get a chance to stop by you will be pleasently surprised. Hopefully Munsok will give a chance to come down and spin on the rooftop lounge!!! Much love Munsok

The GRAND OPENING was awesome!!!!
ReplyDeleteTony thinks a cardboard menu and a black take-out box passes for "swag." Of course, Tony also thinks that not being white gives you the right to make fun of Caucasians.
ReplyDeleteGood stuff, T. By the way, didja ever hear of this place called "The Northland"?
i hate to say this, but i am a huge fan of Nara downtown prior to march. after visiting the drunken fish two times now, i have to say that i wont be visiting nara NEMORE. hands down the drunken fish is the best sushi in KC...
ReplyDeleteniggers like they fish FRIED!
ReplyDeletelolzerz
ReplyDeleteGreat job drunken fish. had amazing food and drinks over the weekend.
ReplyDeleteMay I have another meal?
ReplyDeleteSomeone puked on my plate.
Drunken Fish is some of the best sushi i have had in KC. my husband and i are so happy they are in KC!
ReplyDeleteThis place will close before the end of summer. Went for lunch. It was half empty but the service was awful. It took forever to get the food, longer to get the check and nothing turned out the way it was supposed to. There literally were ingredients missing.
