TKC EXCLUSIVE!!! NOW THAT MAYOR FUNKY HAS BEEN OUSTED, LOCAL LATINOS WANT TO BRING THE NATIONAL COUNCIL OF LA RAZA CONVENTION BACK TO KANSAS CITY!!!
With Mayor Funkhouser soon leaving office, it's like the dawn of a new era in Kansas City.
Maybe like the rising of an Aztec Sun.
Or something like that . . . Given that Latinos now comprise 10% of Kansas City's population.
In any event, there has been a sign of renewed enthusiasm in Kansas City now that our dour, pouty and stubborn Mayor has been rejected by voters.
To wit . . .
THROUGHOUT THE LOCAL LATINO COMMUNITY THERE'S HOPE THAT LEADERS CAN BRING BACK THE NATIONAL COUNCIL OF LA RAZA CONVENTION TO KANSAS CITY AFTER A FIGHT WITH MAYOR FUNKY CANCELED THE EVENT A FEW YEARS AGO!!!
Before we discuss this event, let's review a few facts.
In 2007, Mayor Funky took a great many meetings and worked hard to keep the NCLR Convention in town. He failed.
"La Raza" as used by the NCLR doesn't simply translate to "The Race" and only ignorant people argue that point.

TKC even did a bit of real reporting for this story and earned a quote from an NCLR spokesman . . . His answer was politic and professional but doesn't rule out the NCLR Convention coming back given that Mayor Funky and the reactionaries he courted are now part of Kansas City history:
“Similar to all sites we select when we are planning to hold our conferences, we look at numerous factors in making that decision and of course we do take the political climate toward Latinos into consideration,” said Ron Estrada, Vice President, Integrated Marketing Events at NCLR . “With that said, we are currently not actively researching future conference sites, however, when the time comes to do so, we will certainly consider Kansas City as a possible option."
Nevertheless, given that I've reported on this community for a more than a decade now, I feel confident in noting that the NCLR convention would be an appropriate way to celebrate increasing population numbers and influence of this community.
Mayor Funky's stubbornness and ineptitude might have delayed progress for Kansas City's Latino Community but thankfully his time in office has now passed and so many people are looking to the future with hope.

This is just La Raza's attempt to woo favor with the two remaining Mayoral candidates, neither of which was endorsed by La Raza in the primary.

Once the deal is cut, there will be a very public Lali lovefest with an announcement of the return of the La Raza convention- and their new Mayoral endorsement.

ReplyDeleteI'm uncomfortable with racial organizations unless their practice and stated philosophy is ASSIMILATION of their privileged race into a NON RACIAL, AMERICAN society. Separate and equal doesn't cut it, IMHO. It is my judgment that racial groups should seek to blend racial views, eliminate them, and rid America of racial identities.

ReplyDeleteIf the implication is that the Latino community is going to win by going down the same victimization/entitlement path that what passes for leadership on the east side has tried, this is going to be a major failure.
It's not the '60s any more and the historical facts that were obstacles to blacks don't apply to folks who come to this country voluntarily.
Make contributions that benefit the entire community, or relegate yourself to being marginalized and having your "demands" ignored.

Why do we have to pronounce works such as Nicaragua with a Spanish accent? Yet no one says Espanola for Spain, and Americans don't say Deutzland for Germany.
Deutzland is a weird one. English speakers encounter this country the residents call Deutzland, and we say, "OK, I think we'll call your country Germany."
How did that happen?
