I've already noted that I really like the production quality of Mike Burke's videos. His competition is a bit angry that his campaign seems to follow-up announcements from other candidates with his own pressers on similar themes but this is a competitive field and right now all of the candidates are fighting to distinguish themselves . . .
Anyhoo . . . The latest Mike Burke mini-doc shot in HD is now on Youtube following Sly James and his first campaign TV advert.
Dude.....c'mon. Quality? First of all - this looks like it was made when Burke's campaign new that Sly was going up on TV and felt they needed something. But more importantly...you can make a video like that with a Mac and a long afternoon.
ReplyDelete1. He has no B-roll (which is why I think it was made hastily in response), and it has available stock Mac music over it.
2. He has nearly 30 seconds of uninterrupted close ups on a single character. You learn not to do that in high school AV classes.
3. Which leads me to my next point....No one watches a video online that's two minutes long. Any candidate that thinks their message will resonate is fooling themselves. No one watches em. That's just a fact.
4. Final rule of poor quality....never stage your character in the middle of the screen. Again, High School AV. It's the rule of thirds.
Good answers to boring questions. But Tony...this is not a high quality video. It's an empty bank account and a snow day.
Burke's videos are derivative and sophomoric. He has nothing to say, so he answers other candidates already-produced messages. His ideas are foolish and lack substance. If Burke weren't sinking his own funds into his campaign, he would have had to throw in the towel long ago.
ReplyDeleteHe's boring. I'd quit including him in your mayoral write ups.
Is today Al Gore Day? When he comes out . . see's his shadow and predicts six more weeks of Global Warming?
ReplyDeleteWow. Someone seems seriously threatened by the Burke campaign.
ReplyDeleteHe did not connect with me, the average voter. He seems uncomfortable talking to me in the video. I think he is more at home talking to his developer buddies and fellow attorneys. I always get suspicious when politicals start saying they hope to make dealing with the city easier on folks. I agree it shouldn't be an obstacle course for the average person to negotiate with city hall. However, because of his background assisting developers, I hope he doesn't include them in the category of needing the skids greased even slicker for their developments. They already have it too easy and have taken advantage of the system. His past experience has more to do with getting millions of dollars of tax abatements for city savy developers. This is a totally different world from the average guy trying to get a permit for a room addition.
ReplyDeleteJust bad.
ReplyDeleteIt's a good video. Mike expresses himself well. I'm not affiliated with a campaign, and we should ignore the campaign workers on here posting unfair criticism.
ReplyDeleteI am not a campaign worker, nor have I decided which candidate I'll vote for, but if this video is any indication, it won't be for Mr. Burke. Along with lackluster performances at forums, his involvement with Bill Session and the Port Authority deal, and his Renaissance North development that stuck the city with nearly $25 million in debt that is still being paid off with our tax dollars even today, he is not worthy to be mayor.
ReplyDeleteGloria go eat your usual tub of Meat Loaf and STFU.
ReplyDeleteI don't think that was Gloria. Way too grammatical and not enough typos. Maybe Andrew?
ReplyDeleteInfrastructure and metal plates?
ReplyDeleteSurely there are many more important issues in KCMO. In fact, the appalling murder rate comes to mind.
This is like a Jay Leno "Jaywalking" video. It's one thing to include residents, but a wholly different business to have your own proposals and ideas as a mayoral candidate.
At least he doesn't do drugs, like Rizzo.
ReplyDelete6:18, I think that comment is too sophisticated for even Andrew to pull off.
ReplyDeleteJeez, Mike, take a breath and use periods in your conversation everyone once in a while. He speaks in run-on sentences. I'm not sure he even understands what he is saying at the end of the comment.
ReplyDeleteHowever, the HD looks nice.
Two feet of powder! I'm in heaven
ReplyDelete6:25 -
ReplyDeleteIt seems these are real questions and not plants for a candidates' proposal. If this is being planned as a series, maybe that would be more evident and other issues will be addressed.
Burke is the only person to use any kind of web video other than Klein. Haven't seen Hermann (isn't good on camera) or Rowland (comes off as a jerk) do this and its not in response to a worthless TV buy by James up North. Burke has consistently performed well at debates and even the people involved in the Port Authority mess have been cleared, much less their second-removed attorney. When developments go bad, it is not the developer's attorneys fault. In fact, Hermann and Rowland were on the council when the city financing was approved so if you want to blame at least make it shared.
ReplyDeleteZZZZZZZzzzzzz.
ReplyDeleteHe does look like a mayor.
Does he know the name of the cute black chick?
Snooze, really.
Seriously, this is a college educated, connected (By all accounts) white boy with power structure experience.
It makes me think that I am even dumber than I thought, because I woulda told him to scrap the video now, fired the writer, fired the campaign manager and put the fuckn fear of god into anyone who had anything to do with it.
Now, me personally, I don't think he should be elected because of the Port Authority embarrassment---but if your workin for the man, and this is the best you can do---
"Mike! You gotta gimme something!! you sound like you just missed a spare at a local bowling alley."
So what if he fires ya, tell him the truth---it sucked, and you gotta do better, and I mean now!
JMO.
I don't like the Grecian Formula stuff either. On th one hand, he ain't afraid to look old and pasty (Which can definitely work for ya.) but on the other hand he is dying his hair and it is obvious on the video.
ReplyDeleteThat sends a subtle (Probably inarticulated by the elctorate, but still there...)message of deception.
He is not dynamic like Sly. Thats ok, but he needs to walk, to walk and talk and have a hook, a message, a sound bite that is relevant and hits home. He needs to have the camera over his shoulder or somehting like that and he looks back and smiles, you see his face as he shakes hands and moves on, yeah, I like that.
He does look and sound sincere, but that ain't gonna be enough.
jmo
Shit!
ReplyDeleteHe needs to film it tomorrow, in the snow! Put his wrist watch on his right hand, and no boots, his shoes get wet and soaked, the camerapulls back, you see his pant legs wet, he is shaking hands with citizens talking ab out snow removal and city services.
He talks to snow removal guys too.
He is underdressed for the weather and toughs it out.
Ok i gotta stop.
He has to cough, you can see his breath.
ReplyDeletesorry.
And his nose must be running from the cold... and he pulls a used Kleenex out of his double-breasted jacket to dab at it.
ReplyDelete...and flips his hair.
ReplyDelete:)
Didn't know whom I would support, other than ANYBODY BUT Funkhouser. I am now voting for Mike Burke. He is showing sincere leadership in the midst of our local city government's morass. (such a bad word to use on this blog, but it does convey our situation)
ReplyDeleteBurke is a dishonest development lawyer who has harmed this city while disguising himself as a cheerleader. He fooled a lot of people, including Kay Barnes. Here's hoping the citizens of KC won't be fooled by him anymore. Anybody But Burke!
