ROXY PAINE STAINLESS STEEL TREE SCULPTURE WILL SOON STAND PERMANENTLY IN KANSAS CITY!!!

Check out the latest public art FAIL for Kansas City:

"A 56-foot stainless steel sculpture of a tree by internationally acclaimed artist Roxy Paine will be permanently installed in the Kansas City Sculpture Park at The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, beginning in early April."

Even more detail: Roxy Paine's Steel Sculpture Ferment to be Installed in Kansas City Sculpture Park

The work of this artist makes a bold statement, I'm just not exactly sure what it's saying. The only thing I know for certain is that the good folks at The Nelson-Atkins Museum Of Art seem to be intent on ruining a grand Kansas City building with their horribly gaudy and misguided taste.

  1. and YOUR idea of good art is what exactly? seeing images of Mary in the leftover sauce in that burrito wrapper?

  2. In a time of cutbacks, broken water mains, pothole filled street, City Hall co mayor lawsuits, poor snow removal. And where does our money go? To a stainless steel tree.
    LOL
Kansas City taxpayers are real suckers.

  3. Its obviously a subjective opinion, but the Nelson looks pretty col to me. Those shuttle cocks (Heh, heh...) really do look cool on the ground, juxtapositioned against an older ediface.

What does Eric Bower think about them. Just curious, the guy has a a great eye for unusual angles and his photos are really cool, imo.

The tree looks like a set piece from the Wizard of Oz, but, who knows it might grow on ya.

  5. Having the word "taste", at least as it might be applied to art, anywhere in a sentence written by the content-provider of TKC is the best example of an oxymoron that any of us will witness this year.
Back to bashing the Chiefs and being a booster for Latinos, Tee. Oh, you already had the post about Beth!

  6. Now THIS evokes a tree, Tee. Is this artist competing with God? Will it have leaves on it in the summer? Won't that just make it look like a DEAD tree?

  7. Hey Tony, the Dead Tree Media is represented by a peeled lemon in manyh of the paintings in the Nelson.

    (That will drive him crazy)

  10. They look pretty danged cool to me.
Better than most of those Henry Moore turd sculptures that are strewn about the grounds.

  11. i don't know about you 9:27, but try as i might, i just can't get the curves and dips and scoops in my turd sculptures like Moore does. even eating cheerios doesn't help.

  12. Whatever your taste of art is, that's fine. The biggest misconception about the Nelson-Atkins is that it gets any tax money from the public. IT DOES NOT. The museum is entirely funded by private donations and memberships. Therefore, if a donor decides to provide money for a work of art, he/she is allowed to help decide what that work of art will be.

  13. Yeah! Very cool. But really. Not REAL art. Just a good weld job, I suppose anyway. Have not seen it up close. Must agree though in hard times, money should go elswhere. But...more buts.. Guessing the Hall family had a big hand in it. They contribute a LOT to this city, so, in light of that, I'll let it pass and hope it draws some tourists to the city as payback.
