Intense Kansas City 3rd District Showdown At The Call City Council Forum Today!!!

The Call forum could be the deciding factor for a great many voters in the upcoming primary. I would be remiss if I didn't relay some of the more important details that I personally witnessed and also what I'm hearing from TKC TIPSTERS.

First of all . . . We talked about Council Woman Sharon Sanders Brooks shouted down by the audience and barely able to finish a sentence.

Here's some follow-up: A question over neighborhood and development dollars drew heckles from the crowd. Councilwoman Brooks was finally able to offer an answer and she touted funds and work done by an alphabet soup of local agencies. After the debate an AWESOME TKC TIPSTER tells us this:

"All of that money and those agencies that Sharon listed were in place BEFORE she came into office," said a Tipster in the crowd. "None of the things she mentioned represented work that she did. That was effort of someone else that for which she tried to take credit."

It gets better . . .

Councilwoman Brooks summoned her courage and attacked Council Candidate Michael Fletcher for an advertisement/open letter placed in The Call. She noted inaccuracies alleged by the City Attorney.

In response, Michael Fletcher offered an inspired response that brought the crowd to a fever pitch. Mr. Fletcher simply noted that no people of color were interviewed for new City Prosecutor job and then touted his history of handling cases that stood up for the rights of minority communities. It's a point that Mr. Fletcher often makes but the crowd at The Call forum was especailly receptive and it marked what was probably the highpoint of the forum.

  1. Tony, there you go again taking it easy on the candidate your dear mother supports. Deb Hermann got a question about why folks are just now seeing her on the east side and a statement that she has not supported blacks, hispanics and other minorities. Go back north and stay there was the sentiment I picked up.
She supported Frances Semler, voted against blacks for the court and railed against the church up north that was founded by blacks.

  3. When will this election ever be over?

  4. Interesting . . . 8:53 posts the questions but not the answers. Wouldn't serve his/her purposes, I guess.

  5. Tony refuses to report Mike Fletcher blew his cool and stormed off stage.

    ReplyDelete
  6. That didn't happen.

  7. 1/29/11 9:12 PM- no he didn't storm off the stage, he left the stage and went to the restroom.

  8. Sharon Sanders Brooks started throwing jabs and when she lied that she said she was the one that started and finished the community center on 23rd and everyone involved in the community knows how hard Joyce & Rachel Riley were the ones, Sharon took a shot at them when she said they didn't pay for it!!!! wow Sanders and Curls are on their way out, it doesn't matter how many endorsements that have received.

  9. Mr. Fletcher---

Fuck the Zeitgeist, free the people.

    Free all people.

    Don't stop---find a way. its a moving target.

FUCK THE ZEITGEIST, FREE THE PEOPLE!

  10. The majority of the crowd was African-American. As SSB spoke, people were yelling from the back, "LIAR". She then proceeded to YELL at her constituents as did Cindy Circo, earlier. I could not believe they yelled and were SO rude to the same people they want to elect them! Ed Ford needs to be re-elected. sure, he can ruffle feathers but he isn't bought by big PAC money. Scott Taylor? HA! I thought he was going to be good and interesting to listen to. I believe he had a prepared script. No matter what question was asked of him, he never answered the question. He would go off in another direction that had nothing to do with what was asked. Ellington and Reed had passion and truly want to help the people of the city, had great ideas and will get my votes. They are naive and will certainly have their eyes opened to the corruption that tries to go on in the city but it will be interesting to see if they can have the balls and spines to say no and do the right thing.

  11. 1/29/11 11:25 PM-on point. Ed Ford stood up and addressed the questions, give him credit for atleast answering the question. Wesson stopped Taylor several times when he was bouncing around the answers. Ellington spoke with passion about the concerns and lack of leadership in the 3rd District, the audience agreed with him and was suprise that he didn't back down, when he spoke directly about what is needed to join the eastside with all the districts, he is clearly the candidate that has stood out in all of the forums. Reed was great and he called Wesson on what he has written about the young candidates. I will vote for the Ellington no doubt but I am mixed in my decison between Fletcher & Reed. I believe that Reed has Alvin Brooks pushing his agenda, Fletcher will do a better job. Atleast we have some great candidates. Durwin Rice was lost in space, he like Melba Curls will be a waste of a vote. The younger candidates are the only ones speaking out on the concerns of their districts. Fletcher will fight for his district.

  12. Two thumbs up for Melba Curls addressing Rice moving into the 3rd just to run. Melba why are you just now calling Rice on this? Rice doesn't live on Benton Blvd, he stated he lived at 26th Agnes when did he move? Melba Curls you need to challenge Durwin Rice on his residency, if you want to make it to the primary if not then its Ellington vs Rice.

  13. And let's all pray it is Ellington and Rice

  14. Scott Taylor gives empty suits a bad name.

  15. It's been a long time maybe since Bruce Watkins,Leon Jordon,Bernard Powell that candidates that actually care about the people are running for office. Every time I hear Brandon Ellington speak about the east side of Troost he reflects what is in his heart, this young man has never wavered on his message. No one can deny that Brandon Ellington is for the people. All I can say is thank God for Brandon Ellington, standing up against all odds.

  16. What does Mel Gibson and Mike Fletcher have in common?

When they are completely drunk they become Anti-Semetic.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Did anyone have anything to say about all the crime in Kansas City?
Does anyone have a plan to get rid of the Board of Police Commissioners?

    ReplyDelete
  18. For 9:18am
You're right that public safety should be the number one issue in the campaign, and some of the candidates have made some proposals. As for the police board, the mayor of St Louis has legislation pending in Jeff City to regain control of the St Louis PD. No legislation has EVER been proposed by KCMO.
The difference in so many ways is leadership, responsibility, management, performance standards, and accountability for results.
Whos is that in KCMO government?
    NOBODY!

Ellington is going to get killed by Ms Curls hands down. Curls vs Rice show down let the best person win.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Ms Curls spoke well and answered all question great. Rice is kind of different, but I like his answers. And Ellington needs a little we more work. He only talks to the inner city he needs to know how to speak everybody’s language, until he learns that he does not have a shot. maybe next year.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Rice is a little wired and a air head. Malba is just a black dumb blonde and old, and Ellington is a revolutionary and young. God help us all if anybody in this race gets in.

    ReplyDelete
  22. 2:41 - Thats why Ellington should have run IN district - he had a shot at winning especiallly with the ridiculous behavior of SSB and Fletcher. What was he talking about when he said someone offered him $50k to run IN District? Someone said they could raise $50k or someone offered to GIVE HIM $50k?

    ReplyDelete
  23. 1/30/11 2:41 PM‪- you are really out doing yourself ass hole Melba wake up there is no election next year. Omg

    ReplyDelete
  24. Yeah buddy Ellington is a " revolutionary and this what this city need do you get it CJ? Don't get caught up. R.Hunt

  26. Look, be for real people; if we come together instead of hating on Brandon Ellington because we all know that B.E. is for the people and can get something done in city hall being the next seat for 3rd district at-large city council!! Tell me something, why are you talking so negitive about B.E. what in the hell has Melba Curls done??, besides set on some damn committees."Half of the people live in poverty and making less than 30,000 a year!" I think yall forgot what the situation/reason is about(the community)and making Kansas City a better place to live.Brandon Ellington is not only concerned about african americans but about the community and the east side period!Yall live in K.C yall see what the hell is wrong with our city!!! Get it together HATERS and stop being so damn negitive about everything!!!

  27. Amen Kim let the haters hate they are only helping to get Brandon Ellington name out.

  28. Roach is putting brandon up to running. she is the push behind him and if it werent for her, he would have been done months ago.

    ReplyDelete
  29. 1/31/11 3:52 AM- No misinformed hater- I have worked on Brandon Ellington campaign since February 2010, Ms.E is.behind her son as a supporter,a volunteer. Yes does a lot of the ground work that all campaigns should be doing. Can she pull people together yes she can ,she is the best community organizer that I have witnessed .Brandon is even better in so many ways,he is calling all of his own shots in his campaign Brandon is his own campaign manager Ms.E makes sure he has the best advisors in his camp.and no one in his campaign is paid,we do it cause we believe in his vision for KCMO residents. Ms.E wasn't for Brandon running at first and she will tell you this. Brandon has an anointing placed by God upon him. He is called to do what he is doing. Ms.E raised her son to be what he is but she is not the reason he is running. The people are the only reason! Everyone should have the support of their mother. Brandon Ellington I am proud to be on you team. We Have To Do Better www.electellington.com

  30. Ms.E has done a hellva job for Brandon, you said he had no name recognition well Brandon Ellington name is well known. What you folks don't know is Brandon is a smart young man that has executes his plans to Ms.E and she carries them out.Great teamwork. Keep doing what you guys are doing.

  33. Those of you that attended the forum, question: any truth to that both SSB and Fletcher were booed? And if so, why was Fletcher booed?

    ReplyDelete
  34. WOW.
No matter who gets the seat, its going to be ugly. Many people hate Brooks personally, not for what she has actually accomplished for her district. But I will tell you this, she has not and will not sell out her community. On the hand theres Flecher, who has been planning an attack on Brooks for years now, who does not live in KC, he lives in Long Beach, who makes attacks on her that are largely inaccurate, and is playing off the personal realtionships that have failed for Sharon. He's a lawyer who likes to SUE everyone and has pocketed from many of his efforts with the community. You know if he sues the city or council, thats your money being spent. Sounds like the same mess we witness with Funk vs Council. No productivtiy. I think he may casue so much mayheim that nothing will be able to get done. He is making promises he cant keep, things he has no control over. Reed, sounds like he has a good plan, speaks well and I would not be surprised if he slides in becasue everyone is so feed up with the Fletcher vs Brooks non-sense. But everyone speaks good during campaigns, im not sure if he has a clear plan or an effective one for right now. He may get ran over, he needs more time to develope. I think he will be a great canidate in the next election. My advise to him would be to stay with it!

  36. Sharon Sanders Brooks is an honest politician. Look at the powers that be that want her out of office. What is their past? Many of them are convicted felons. Sharon does not do as she says, "Back room deals" or "hook-ups." I'm voting for Sharon Sanders Brooks. She is a respectable black woman, that is often horribly disrespected and mistreated publicly by Fletcher.

Sharon Sanders Brooks has integrity. Why didn't Tony report in his blog how Fletcher verbally attacked Ms. Brooks at the Call forum on saturday then stormed off the stage?
