Let's not forget that we talked about negative reaction to the all white municipal judge candidate selections earlier this month.
Now The Star transcribes the details:
"But representatives of the Kansas City chapter of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and the Urban Summit have sent a letter to council members urging them to reconsider.
"Rather than filling a judicial position that has been vacant for several years and adding yet another white judge to the exclusionary and racially imbalanced municipal court bench, we suggest that you transfer the funds budgeted to open an additional court room (over $200,000) to the parks and recreation department for youth enrichment activities and to extend operating hours for community centers," the letter states."
Update: City Council members selected Anne LaBella as the newest municipal court judge on Thursday.
choosing a candidate for any job based on race is wrong. i don't give a fuck if every person up for the job is white black or purple. the best person for the job should be chosen. Affirmative Action is inherently racist. The attitude of entitlement shown by blacks and increasingly mexicans makes me sick. if you can't get the job without race being considered then you don't deserve the job. what is going to happen to this country when the tipping point of minorities vs. whites hits? many communities are already majority "minority".

ReplyDeleteI don't get the connection between parks and rec and a judge. But I would rather the money go to parks than to replace a long-vacant position. KCMO judges are the highest paid in the state. They make more than supreme court judges. Yet they work less than a 40 hour week. Far less.
ReplyDeleteWhy is it the city's responsibility to keep the youth happy and off the streets? Why aren't the school districts, with all their athletic programs, doing more to serve the student population that ISN'T qualified for the teams. Come on -- the money spent on football and basketball teams could be used to serve a much larger group of youth!

5:43, are you aware that the last judge appointed was black, and one of the last three was a latino woman. I think it is a pretty darn diverse bench. Why do we "have" to have any race/gender/religion, on any given panel??? THAT is racist.

ReplyDeleteI guess if you guys are ok with the fact that blacks were not really given the right to vote until the 1960s and don't want to address the fact that whites have benifitted from all white affirmative action through the history of this country and that is all hunky dory with you go right ahead. ReplyDelete60% of the cases in Municipal Court are minorities, but that doesn't translate to 60% minority judges. STOP! I know we can have a great discussion about WHY there are 60% minorities in court when the minority population at large is less.
Municipal Court and Family Court are the two systems that most of us ever see. Let's talk about the screwed up situation in Family Court. Like that weirdo Guardian Ad Litem guy who is also heavily involved in "Father's Rights" WTF? Those poor women are screwed the minute he gets their case. He'll have them jumping through hoops just to wear them down and the Judges let him run wild. They trust his judgement, but nobody out here has an control over these people. Sure most people who volunteer in family court are well intentioned, but, hell, let in one guy with an agenda and we have one huge question mark.
The presiding judge should call a halt to these cases because Mr. Father's Rights does not pass the smell test.

ReplyDeleteI'm so sick of hearing about slavery. Why aren't black people grateful to the hundreds of thousands of white people who fought for them and in so doing lost their homes, businesses, farms and families? Bled for them? Died for them?
People are always free to go live in some country where they erroneously believe slavery never occurred. Or worse yet, slavery complainers can join other free men in sunny hellhole Liberia.

Committing a higher proportion of crime shouldn't entitle a group of people to have more Judges.
