Funky Speculation: KCPD Chief Corwin could easily be Kansas City's next Mayor

Of course KCPD Chief James Corwin is going to deny these rumors until they turn out to be true . . . But the fact is . . .

TALK OF KCPD CHIEF CORWIN AS THE NEXT MAYOR OF KANSAS CITY HAS BEEN CIRCULATING AROUND POLITICAL CIRCLES FOR QUITE SOME TIME!!!

Here's the reason why it might be true and why it's a slam dunk.

  • Best of both worlds: Corwin is a political outsider in Kansas City with no ties to the development crowd, but he also has a solid record of public service and practice leading a complex, vast organization.

  • He's up for retirement just before the next round of political fundraising for the Mayor's Office.

  • He's a big, tall white guy . . . Kansas City is such a self-conscious (sorta racist) town this is actually a qualification for leadership.

  • Crime is only going to get worse . . . Mayor Funky hasn't been able to establish any credibility on this issue, so there's no way he's going to be able to attack Corwin on this topic no matter what the homicide rate.

  • As Chief, Corwin arrested somebody with his bare hands . . . That's the exact opposite of Mayor Funky hiding under his desk, at his house, at the Library and taking marching orders from his wife. Corwin's mere presence would reveal that Mayor Funky is nothing more than a wimp politician and a bad one at that . . .

  • Unlike Mayor Funky, Corwin has consistently stood up for Kansas City's Latino Community and has championed a policy of working with law abiding immigrant communities to prevent crime rather than mindlessly cracking down on illegal immigrants which only leads to a lack of cooperation with local law enforcement. He'll have the support of the growing Latino Community without question and his proven results in addressing a complex problem with quantifiable results are something that Mayor Funky hasn't garnered (and won't) during his term in office.

  • Face it, never again will there be a politico like Mayor Funky who has made Kansas City the laughing stock of the entire nation and allowed his wife to dangle the City Charter between her barefoot toes that she once paraded around the 29th floor.

    Downside . . .

  • If Corwin is the New Mayor, local control of the KCPD might become a realistic possibility. If this happens Jan Marcason could get a police force of her own and I would have to shut up about her putrid potato salad, which is so far the only reason she's so popular in the 4th District.

  • Airport security might be taken over by the KCPD as well unless Corwin wisely promises against such a (needless) move - In which case he would take the Northland without much of a problem.

Again . . . This is all speculation but I thought I would post the chatter in Kansas City political circles a few months before The Star decides to report it as "news."

    2. The man who heads a joke of a police department for Mayor? Sure, why not.

    3. I think this is the best way to get back local control. Funk doesn't have the weight to do it.

    4. Perfect. He and Cathy Jolly could give us the police state we desperately need. Freedom is overrated - terrorists are hiding around every corner. MORE CAMERAS!

    5. Hey at least then we would get some smile feel good ton hall sessions. The only thing is Corwin tends to lie a lot with his silence.

He commits the crime of omission rather than a crime of comission.

    6. I would vote for George W. Bush again before I voted for Funkhouser.

Also, these criticisms of Corwin seem very superficial. Tony I think you might be on to something.

      Anybody but Riederer

    7. Please, no more of the 'non-politician' types who(despite their work) have no idea what it takes to be mayor. He might be nice guy(so was Funk) but not as mayor.

    8. Thus spake Cathy Jolly.

    9. He's white. Are you sure he's the best guy, Tony?

    10. I knew there was something about Kay Barnes and Cleaver I didnt trust, they were tall white guys.
Seriously though, Corwin would probably be a shoe in if he ran.

    13. Corwin? The guy who hamstrings the police department? Why not require plastic vaginas as police wear since his limp wristed policies made pussies out of the police.

This guy is a stooge. He can be chief of Sim City. That's about it.

    14. I think Jim Corwin would make Kansas city proud as Mayor. I challenge any of you who would seek to discredit him or his abilities, step into his shoes for a season and see if you have the cajones he does to face opposition on all sides, with the integrity he does it with. You who are without mistakes, cast the first stone. I thought as much. We are very proud of you Jim and thank you for all the years of service...
