Jim Corwin: SuperCop

In my experience I've always found the Kansas City Police Department to be the best in the area . . . Far better than any suburban smokey that has racially profiled TKC.

This story in The Star simply proves my assertion:
Kansas City Police Chief Jim Corwin was on his way to an awards luncheon Friday in an unmarked police car when he saw a robbery near a metro bus take place.

While waiting at a stoplight at 11th Street and Grand Boulevard, the chief saw a young woman get off an ATA bus and knock down an older man using a walker.

She then leaned over and plucked a wad of bills from his pocket, Corwin said, and took off briskly down the street.

Decked out in full dress uniform with ornate decorations, Corwin jumped out of his car and followed.

“You need to grab a piece of that wall!” Corwin yelled after catching up with the woman.

Corwin told her to fork over the cash. She refused.

“She said she wasn’t going to let it go until the police got there,” Corwin said. “I don’t know who she thought I was.”

The arrest was Corwin's first as chief.
Yeah, I think this perfectly qualifies as what I'm referring to when I write about LEADERSHIP BY EXAMPLE.

I can remember last summer Corwin was being grilled by Missouri politicos pushing their immigration agenda in order to avoid dealing with Missouri's real problems. Corwin was one of many people who stood up to the folks from the State House and had the courage to tell them that local or state solutions for a federal problem weren't effective . . . Despite the fact they make good headlines, incite panic and help people get re-elected.

Anyway, don't think that I don't have few problems with the KCPD as well . . . I've always thought they could step up their efforts aimed at community cooperation with the po-po and there certainly needs to be more minority officers at higher levels. However, overall KCPD and Corwin are a great example of what a big city, professional and inspiring police force should look like and this is one story of many that should make the people of Kansas City proud of their police force.

  2. Corwin's a great guy--we're fortunate to have him as Chief.
