August is the worst time of year for Kansas City violent crime . . . But so many activist, politicos and neighborhood volunteers are tired of a merely reactionary approach. All of Kansas City is looking for leadership on crime.
To wit . . .
SOME OF THE UPPER ECHELON AND AWESOME TKC READERS ARE TALKING ABOUT A MORE RESTRICTIVE CURFEW FOR WAYWARD TEENS ON THE PLAZA IN ORDER TO REALLY CRACK DOWN AND SEND A MESSAGE REGARDING CRIME!!!
Philly has led the way with a 9pm curfew. Now some of the most well-connected and KICK-ASS TKC READERS are calling on Mayor Sly to do the same before the next Plaza riot. Obviously, the current Plaza curfew of 11pm and Midnight isn't working.
It seem that the strategy of trying to keep Plaza brawling and near riot conditions on the weekend a secret isn't working.
So . . . A hopefully upcoming ordinance for the Plaza shopping district for all teenagers under 18 to be off the street or accompanied by a parent by 9pm seems like a viable proscriptive solution. Only Mayor Sly could introduce this measure given that he's the only guy that can deflect accusations of racism. The Council, especially the 3rd District needs to back him up on this measure that would apply to dumbass kids of all ethnic, racial and economic backgrounds who don't have a constitutional right to destroy the last luxury entertainment venue in Kansas City.
No, the solution is not the panacea for every Plaza problem. But it's a step in the right direction and something that Kansas City can do before the next Plaza riot other than merely hope of the problem to go away on its own.

Our own African American citizens who can't be trusted not to steal and violently assault, in large groups, other citizens.
Our own African American citizens, who perpetrate racial hate crimes that are buried and hidden by the 4th estate.
Our own African American citizens, who send their uneducated thug children en masse to wreak havoc and destroy everything in theri path.
As this happens, we adjust, we lower the bar for African American behaviour, and African American parenting while idiots call for more money and programs to solve the problem.

Well, Tony's love of fishsticks has cost him dearly in his defense and then criticism and then hypocracisim in the recent young James debacle, including neither issuing a retraction when they couldn't distinguish a 40 year old from a 20 year old so he is now forced to say something of reason or risk damnation to endless flames of commentary.

Wilding is a form of terrorism. That was certainly the case up north last week. If we force our kids not to be out at 9pm, which is early...was even early when I was a kid eating late breakfast at Putches on the Plaza, then the terrorists have won.

ReplyDeleteI drove home through the plaza on Saturday night and was seriously scared... there were so many gangbanger types just driving around with blaring music, I was ready for shots to be fired at any minute.

If you lose the Plaza KCMO is done because all the big money south of the Plaza will run. There is no margin of error. Also, apparently banning any of Sly James kids would go a long way too. BOOM!
ReplyDeleteExcellent idea. When I lived in Indianapolis few years back the city did the same thing downtown with a curfew to curb loitering and the BS that goes with it. It actually worked well.

It's stupid that the curfew applies to 18 year olds, when in Missouri, 17 is an adult. You can be arrested for any offense and still not end up in Juv. court. That part of the ordiance needs to be changed to 16 and under to literally apply the law correctly. As for a 9pm curfew, someone said, let the police deal with it? If thats the case, then just wait for everyone to complain when "they" are not out "preventing" homicides and shootings.

ReplyDeleteI think it'll be awesome once the PD goes under city control. At least it'll finally take that state vs city control argument out of play. And then since they're under city control, they'll be able to form a union and go on strike when they don't get their pay raises. And oh yeah, the fire dept won't be able to cover for the PD like the PD did for the fire dept when THEY went on strike back in 1975. Be careful what you wish for people...

ReplyDeleteWe were just there this past weekend. Walking around the corner to the movie theater at 8:30 pm, one PO. Outside the movie theater, 2 PO, inside the movie theater, 2 more PO. At 11 pm, outside the movie theater, 4 PO and around the corner and up the street at Broadway, more PO, a couple cruisers, and lots of mouthy youth. We opted to walk back to our hotel down a dark alley. There we found 2 Police horse trailers. Then, just as we got to our hotel, a police chopper.
ReplyDeleteThe kids were not at the movie theater...they were all up and down on Broadway and the side streets. They don't have cars, so they "cruise" on their feet.
I agree with a curfew. If it can't be enforced, then maybe the stores and restaurants need to close @ 9pm.
