Once again, the Mayor's wife is dominating Kansas City discourse when we should all be worrying about local crime and fixing the sewers.
Nearly everyone who has read it has reacted to Mayor Funky's insistence that his wife stay at City Hall with near disbelief.
Some would say that I’m the one who is stirring unnecessary conflict because I insist on having my wife up here. If she would only stay home, all of this would go away.With this passage . . .
And that might be true, were it not for one stubborn fact: Gloria has been essential to all of our successes.
Mayor Mark Funkhouser has once and for all proven himself to be clueless, pathologically stubborn and undeserving to hold Kansas City's highest office.
I think a recent, awesome cartoon by Lee Judge accurately depicts the discussion regarding Gloria Squitiro's presence at City Hall.
And I use the word discussion because there is no debate. With the exception of one brave blogger there is no major media outlet or pundit who has endorsed the presence of Gloria Squitiro in the Mayor's office. And I should note that Dan from Gone Mild never specifically noted that he supports Gloria's presence at City Hall . . . He supports the Mayor, he's worried about the role of other volunteers, he criticizes the City Council and he overestimates the influence of this blog (blush) but not once does he write that Gloria should stay.
It's worth noting that there's no way TKC is leading this charge, people can make up their own mind . . .
HOWEVER, I GUESS IT IS IMPORTANT TO REMEMBER THAT TKC REPORTED NEWS OF GLORIA SQUITIRO'S MAMMY COMMENT ALMOST A MONTH BEFORE ANY NEWS OUTLET IN KANSAS CITY!!!
But that's the past . . . What's important now is to see Mayor Funky for the ineffectual, confused, weak, stubborn and misguided leader that he has always been.
Of course the Mayor loves his wife, that's great . . . But it's not what he was elected to do and I believe that her role in the Mayor's office was one of the worst bait and switch tactics ever perpetrated on Kansas City voters.
Gloria Squitiro was not in Mayor Funky's office when he was City Auditor, word is that she rarely if ever visited City Hall. The Funkhouser Administration argues that Kansas City voters should have implicitly known that she would have a role because of her work with the Mayoral campaign but several wives of former Mayors were involved with campaigning and nearly all of them never actually took a desk in the Mayor's office, interviewed staff, fired people or wielded such power i.e. Co-Mayor.
As for the current, panicked defense of his wife . . . A few people have written about it but I find two local bloggers had the best take on the subject in the following posts:
Other than that . . . There has not been one, not one plea specifically supporting Gloria Squitiro's presence at City Hall from any local pundit . . No one but the Mayor regards her as essential. Kansas City didn't vote for her.
Furthermore, her presence has been nothing short of destructive. Recently I was thinking about Squitiro's role in the Funky Administration and I realized that the reason why she has no support is because of what her presence means . . .
ADVOCATING FOR GLORIA SQUITIRO TO STAY AT CITY HALL IMPLICITLY SUPPORTS:
1. The use of racially divisive language.
2. Nepotism
3. Bare feet in Kansas City's highest office.
4. Hilarious but horribly gross Holiday letters.
5. Unsanctioned operatives at the highest level of government who are not accountable for their actions.
6. A possible connection to the occult.
7. The Mayor's dismissal of the opinion of elected representatives i.e. the voters.
8. Dismissive terminology regarding entire Kansas City neighborhoods.
9. Rogue sponsorship deals gone awry . . . Remember the rumors that Squitiro was looking for a smart way to go green?
10. A woman who literally has the Mayor under her toes . . . Along with verified reports of Mayoral foot massages at the office!!!
It's nice to know the Mayor loves his wife but once again his political inexperience and horrible advice from his staff have mistakenly turned a political issue into a personal one . . . The Mayor's devotion to his wife is admirable (even if it should be done at home) but in his latest statement . . .
MAYOR FUNKY IS ASKING ALL OF KANSAS CITY TO ACCOMMODATE HIS PRIVATE LIFE!!!
The Mayor's devotion to his wife belongs in their house and not in Kansas City's highest office. Mayor Funky's oblivious statements and stubborn defiance in this matter is nothing more than an effort to flaunt and champion his lifestyle over any decorum, code of conduct or ethical guidelines in Kansas City.
This controversy has adversely affected the Mayor's ability to lead and while the clueless devotion to his wife's presence in his office is reminiscent of the abdication crisis of Edward VIII . . . This whole mess is detrimental to Kansas City and obviously drawing attention away from more important problems like crime and water infrastructure.

ReplyDeleteIt's really quite shocking that the city does not already have a policy about volunteers. It should be strict--with background checks, drug testing, as well as appropriate training. (Or do we want pedophiles coaching?)
ReplyDeleteThe mayor says Gloria has been responsible for the maypr's successes--and he forgot to mention she's responsible for some colossal f*ck-ups, like the car fiasco, the Semler mess(and its attendant racism), the holiday letter, the barefooted vulgarity that has driven long-time employees away. And she interviews people for jobs? If that isn't acting as an employer, I don't know what is. I think they both need to go. Let the mayor pro tem take over.
By the way, Wayne Cauthen is a very good, smart guy--anyone who says otherwise simply doesn't know him or his work. If Funks were half as dedicated to this city as Cauthen is, something positive might get accomplished.

He has no new or good ideas, says the obvious repeatedly, and is so caught up in "his" agenda he really doesn't want to hear from anyone else. He and his cohort need to go.
ReplyDeleteI'm very curious about the comments regarding Wayne Cauthen as a good manager. What has he done besides stonewall the Mayor and City Council? He has repeatedly been asked to provide important information to the Mayor and City Council so that they can know important things like what's happening with the financial situation of this city. He, too, decides which rules and policies he will accept and which he won't. Where is his accountability? He defers hiring decisions when there are perfectly qualified candidates in City Hall in an undisguised and blatant attempt to hire minorities or other outside candidates who have no real awareness of the City's needs and haven't to date contributed much to the successful running of the City. His first 4 years were spent enabling Kay Barnes' pillaging of the City's finances to create the Sprint Center and Power and Light District. Where are the good jobs that pay livable wages and provide benefits to support our families? What is the status of the basic services to neighborhoods and improvements to the neighborhoods? It seems to me that Wayne Cauthen has only served his own self and hasn't cared about this City or its citizens. I don't fault the Mayor for trying to get rid of him; I just fault his stupidity in not handling it better.

Oh wait, downtown was a ghost town with such lovely establishments like the Goldmine drawing so many folks to spend money in our fair city. Let's see, what sort of wonderful things could I buy at the old vacant Jones Store besides mold spores? Good jobs, what the folks at HR Block are making minimum wage? You keep sputtering and spitting that the Sprint Center and the Power and Light District are worthless but you keep ignoring how there was NOTHING there before. This city manager with Kay Barnes got 8 city blocks prepped and ready for Sprint and P&L. Water lines, sewer lines, steam lines, gas lines, street paving, street lights, traffic lights ect, ect, ect.

Cauthen has done more for the City than the Mayor. For one, he leaves his wife at home.

Secondly, it is extremely difficult under American law for a politican to file such suits. The standard is more difficult for the public figure than for a private john doe. It is also important to note that the Truth is the defense against defamation charges. So far as I can tell, Tony's in the clear. Votaire said something to the effect, "I may not agree with a thing you say, but I will defend to my death your right to say it". First Amendment notions flow from that sort of idea. By the way, if there were to be a defamation suite, I would attend the court case just for the entertainment value. I personally want more info on the mayors physical exame.
