Locals might have missed this note . . . It's an STL op/ed on the always contentious topic of police control that's will likely gain momentum after the midterms.
Here's the word . . .
"As mayor of Kansas City, I met the very talented St. Louis Police Chief Robert Tracy years ago, as he spoke at an event with then-St. Louis Mayor Tishaura Jones. With city police still under local control, the mayor had appointed him. The chief and his deputies appeared regularly before the Board of Aldermen.
"And for the first time in years, crime in St. Louis dropped dramatically, gaining national attention for declining homicide numbers in a city long associated with unconscionably high violent crime numbers. After a decade of challenge, local control worked to make the people of St. Louis safer, outpacing my home city in violent crime reductions.
"So, what’s a Missouri Legislature to do? Abolish local control of the police, of course, and return to the trope of criticizing challenges in the city of St. Louis while removing tools for St. Louis leaders to fix them."
