For locals asking about the local dudes who are (likely) soon to be tagged up with all kinds of "creative" markings desptie the fact that their goal to prevent pedestrian accidents is commendable . . . Check-it:
The SafeAcross KC program involves using safety improvements, public art, signage, and studies to increase awareness about pedestrian and driver safety and promote crosswalk compliance.
Since 2021, there has been an average of 51 fatal or serious injury crashes per year on Kansas City streets involving pedestrians. The SafeAcross KC campaign is being launched to combat this trend.
Sculptural installations of the campaign mascot, “Mr. Walker,” will be used to increase awareness of crosswalk locations and remind drivers to watch out. These brightly colored, life-size metal cutouts will be installed this month near crosswalks at 11 locations around Kansas City, with more coming later. They are intended to reinforce existing crosswalk signage and serve as visible reminders to drivers and pedestrians.
The goal of the campaign is to initiate a cultural change in the community to increase pedestrian safety. This includes encouraging motorists to actively watch for pedestrians and to yield to them at crosswalks, while urging pedestrians to also travel responsibly by using crosswalks, obeying traffic signals, and following other tips to stay safe.
The original SafeAcross program was started in Springfield, Missouri, and Kansas City is the largest municipality to join the initiative. This program is also made possible through support from MoDOT.
