Kansas City Streetcar Restaurant Blames River Market Parking Crisis For Shutdown

An ongoing fight over the culture of Downtown Kansas City continues to have implications for small biz.

The basics of the argument . . .

Local "urbanist" activists contend that every major American city charges for on street parking and KC efforts in the River Market simply follow this trend.

However . . .

Kansas City small biz point to so many surrounding smaller cities that don't target and chase away customers making serving crowds even harder for urban locations.

Either way . . .

Here's the closing remarks for one more local biz that blames the ongoing Kansas City downtown parking crisis for their demise . . .

The owners of Car No. 551 on Delaware Street announced the restaurant's closure in a post on Facebook.

The restaurant, which sits inside a restored 1940s Kansas City Streetcar at the corner of Delaware Street and West 5th Street, opened in September 2025. Its closure marks just over a year in business.

Then, owners went on to cite what they call Kansas City's "aggressive, seemingly relentless" parking enforcement and "frustrating parking policies."

"When customers have to worry about finding affordable parking or getting ticketed just to enjoy lunch, dinner, or a drink in the River Market, it hurts the very small businesses that help make this neighborhood special," owners said. "Small businesses need support from their city, not additional obstacles to overcome."
