Kansas City Police Announce Top Cop Listening Sessions

The search for a new boss for the biggest police department in the metro is now officially underway.

Remember . . .

Back in July, current Chief of Police Stacey Graves announced her intention to retire after a 29-year career with KCPD, sparking a search for her successor. The board said she will remain chief until it names a successor.

Giving the public a gripe listening session first seems like a better idea than other efforts and speaks to renewed calls for "local control" of police.

Here's the word . . .

The Board of Police Commissioners of Kansas City, Missouri, is encouraging residents and those who work in Kansas City to participate in a series of community listening sessions being hosted by the Kansas City Public Safety Coalition as the Board continues its search for the next Chief of Police.

The listening sessions, taking place across Kansas City throughout October and early November, will provide an opportunity for community members to share the qualities and leadership characteristics they would like to see in the next Chief. The sessions are also intended to help strengthen trust and relationships between Kansas City residents and the Kansas City Police Department.

The Kansas City Public Safety Coalition is a broad group of business, civic, faith and community organizations working together to gather community perspectives. Feedback from the listening sessions, along with information collected through an online survey, will be compiled and presented to the Board of Police Commissioners at its meeting on November 17, 2026.

A separate session will be held for invited community faith leaders and KCPD chaplains on Monday, October 19.

The Board appreciates the Coalition’s partnership and encourages community members to take part in this important opportunity to help inform the search for Kansas City’s next Chief of Police.
